"Review of the EP Goodnight Warsaw - Paula & Karol"

„The Americans have Au Revoir Simone, the Welsh have Los Campesinos! And
the time has come for Poland to get their own glockenspiel-playing band. And what a band it is! This is without a doubt one of this year’s most interesting and important debut bands of the alternative Polish music scene. And while it’s unfortunate that we can only say this for a small number of bands in our country – but this EP can, without a question, be put on the shelf next to other British or American bands
that are masters of their genre. But what genre? Theirs is a type of music that fits into one of the fastest-growing sub-genres of the alternative music scene (and for
a Polish band it is quite rare to be so in-the-know). Here you’ll find a bit of modern, alternative folk, some classic, twee-pop sensitivities, and it’s all packaged
up into a lo-fi box which crosses the barriers of intimacy between musicians and their listeners. Throughout this EP, we get a sense that the musicians took out their
guitars, glockenspiel and electronics in the middle of our bedroom and started playing just for us. While there are a lot of bands that play this
type of music overseas, there are really two things that decide if a band will soar beyond the average – strong melodies and total honesty. When listening
to this EP you are convinced that Paula and Karol are masters of both. Their melodies stay in your head for days – and you will uncontrollably start
humming their unforgettable lyrics. This is the way great records should sound – and this EP is undoubtedly one of them”

"The week that rocked Poland"

[The album] is much more assertive and melodic than the previous two. This doesn't say too much abut it's authors, except that a band that could always play concerts around campfires and reconcile the Polish music scene has become a group of professionals on a big stage. That is a good thing (organization-wise), but could signal a bit of danger for audiences who have loved P&K for their enthusiasm, energy and naturalness. The brass section at the end (with The Incredible Combo featuring) sounds amazing and this is where you can really hear [Ryan] Hadlock's influence. - Polifonia - Polityka's Music Blog

"Brodka: Paula & Karol infected me with positive energy"

Paula & Karol play a big concert. I have never met such a positive, and at the same time naive, group of people. [...] Paula & Karol reminded me that making music is fun and, even if you're totally exhausted, you shouldn't treat it like a job to do. - Gazeta Wyborcza

Bio

Paula
& Karol burst onto the Polish folk pop stage 5 years ago. They
initially struck a chord as the odd couple of the music scene –
singing in English, playing instruments they hadn't mastered, giving
concerts at backyard parties and on street corners – they quickly
came to be among the pioneers in the now-growing indie pop music
scene in Poland.

Paula
- a half-Polish, half-Canadian sociologist - met Karol, a musician
from Warsaw, and they began making music together, first as a duo,
then gathering a clan of friendly faces to play with. The group, who
now include

Christoph Graf Von Thun und Hohenstein on keyboards, Staszek Wróbel
on percussion, Krzysiek Pożarowski on bass and Szymon Najder on the
electric guitar,

helped Paula and Karol’s sound grow from home-made romantic folk,
to a deeper, richer pop rock. In recent years, the band has toured
multiple times across Poland, including a double-headlining tour with
pop star Brodka. They've have performed in Iceland, the Netherlands
(including Eurosonic), Ukraine, France, Great Britain (on tour plus
at The Great Escape), United States and Canada (for SXSW and Canadian
Music Week), and regularly tour in Germany (including the Reeperbahn
Festival), where Paula now lives.
What
has changed after all these years? Paula and Karol explain: “We sit
down
and write music together, talk about life, and try to make the songs
as personal we can. We have also been playing and touring with the
same group of people for a few years – and those people have become
our closest friends and they influence what we do and how we play in
a very strong way.”

After
taking a bit of time off, the band is releasing a third studio album.
Entitled
Heartwash,
the album was recorded in Warsaw by the renowned, Grammy-nominated,
Washington-based producer Ryan Hadlock, and made possible with the
help of a hefty crowdfunding campaign run through the Polish website
Polakpotrafi.pl. The album captures Paula & Karol’s ecstatic,
often psychedelic live energy, while also trying to accommodate the
new cast of characters that joined the band in recent years. The
songwriting duo kept to their pop convention, filling the album with
sing-along lyrics that cover themes of honesty, love, loss and
hardship. The duo made up the word “heartwash” to convey the
“process in which you wash off all the negative experiences that
stop you from moving on and going further.”

The
album will be released in September 2014.
