  Soulful balladeers of the John Mayer school may soon find a new source of competition in a young one named Zack Weber. The promising singer/songwriter’s debut album, Daydreams and Day Jobs, alone could give them a run for their money.

  His great vocal range and his powerful control of it is matched by intensely intimate lyrics as tender and sure as a John Legend joint. Many people have commented on the maturity of the St. Louis, MO born 22 year-old’s lyrics, and it’s true that they are unusually introspective for someone his age. (“Sleep” in particular tugs at the heart strings.) But what is even more interesting is the range of influences he and his band draw on.
  
  Weber experiments freely with modes and styles on this album while remaining surprisingly restrained in his songwriting. Blending a gentle reggae rhythm into the playful piano pop of “Words” is a neat trick and he makes it look easier than it really is. From there, he makes a departure with “Lonely Butterfly’s” English folk tinge — kind of like Simon and Garfunkel’s “Scarborough Fair”. Songs like this demonstrate his ability to breath new life into older influences.
  
  Later on, he slinks away from the sensitivity so much on display in the first few tracks and flashes his troubled side with the jazzy, blues-inflected “Ms. Know-It-All”. Nice. He even rocks out with full-throated vocals on the swelling “Famous,” channeling Eddie Vedder before tripping into a death defying falsetto in the final seconds of the track. He takes off from there into a moody rock journey on “Shoot the Moon” and even toys with scat on “Playground Rocks.”
  
  The second half of the album treats listeners to delicate, finger-picked acoustic versions of some of the songs that are fully arranged on the first half. These show off even more his capacity for restraint and knack for creating an atmosphere of intimacy.
  
  At times, with all his musical exploration it can seem as though Weber is trying to find a voice and a style to call his own, but he can certainly be forgiven for that at this stage in his career. It leaves you wondering what side of himself will be revealed by his sophomore effort.

  Quirky, funky, singer-songwriter music is all the rage right now. If you're a Jack Johnson, Jason Mr...Quirky, funky, singer-songwriter music is all the rage right now. If you're a Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz or Eric Hutchinson fan, our next Millennium Music Conference Noteworthy, St. Louis singer/songwriter Zack Weber is worth checking out.
  
  Consistency is a difficult concept to grapple with when it comes to music. Sometimes a band will put out a new album and get blasted for it sounding exactly like their last one. Sometimes a band will put out a new album and get blasted for trying to find a new sound. Sometimes people complain about all the tracks on an album sounding so similar that nothing is memorable. Sometimes people complain about tracks being different to the point that the album is uneven. If there's one complaint to level about Weber's 2007 release Daydreams and Dayjobs it would be the latter.
  
  The album includes both full-band and acoustic versions of six tracks and only a full-band version of a seventh, and those seven tracks cover a lot of ground musically. “Playground Rocks” is a jazzy, goofy track about yearning for the innocence of young love that features Weber scatting. “Words” has more of a Jack Johnson-ish island sound and even a little bit of a reggae beat about two thirds of the way through. The rest of the album is more emotional, a little bit darker and a little bit starker. Luckily, Weber has enough talent to pull it all off. He’s only 21, and is still probably finding himself as an artist.
  
  Personally, I’m kind of partial to the acoustic portion of the album. The songs are simple but pretty, and Weber has a very relaxing voice.

  The musical range exemplified on the debut release of singer/songwriter Zack Weber is matched
  only, if not bested, by this wonder kid's voice. Checking in at 3 years under the legal drinking age,
  Weber is destined for musical greatness.
  
  Daydreams and Day Jobs will deservedly put him squarely in the heart of the singer/songwriter market.
  Weber's heavy pop influence will sit much better with the John Mayer/Jack Johnson listener as opposed
  to say the Ben Harper or late Elliot Smith fan, but musically and lyrically Weber has the ability to please
  both.
  
  Weber's lyrical maturity shines the brightest on the Daydreams and Day Jobs opener, "Sleep" and
  "Famous" which is sang beautifully in a ghostly, Jeff Buckley like manner. "Ms Know-It-All" proves
  Weber is capable of brining the funk, while "Lonely Butterfly" is a melodic ballad that would most likely
  be given an Art Garfunkel seal of approval.
  
  Where Daydreams and Day Jobs is at its best, and ultimately what will write the musical check for
  Weber, is the laid back, slightly reggae flavored feel of songs like "Words" and "Playground Rocks"
  Like a Jack Johnson song with more depth "Words" should be Weber's first single, but it is this writers
  opinion "Playground Rocks" is the albums ace.
  
  As the first of many more great things to come, start your Zack Weber collection now. Daydreams and
  Day Jobs is a terrific first album by a very talented artist. Very soon Weber's musical daydreams will become
  his musical day job.

  I made my way to Williamsburg, Brooklyn to hang out with shutterbug extraordinaire, Chiun Kai Shih o...I made my way to Williamsburg, Brooklyn to hang out with shutterbug extraordinaire, Chiun Kai Shih of SMC Creative Inc. His subject? Zack Weber and his band. Zack is a laid back soul with a playful spirit who also happens to be tragically good looking, reminiscent of a cross between a young Johnny Depp and John Mayer.
  
  Originally from St. Charles, MO, Zack set out at the ripe young age of 14 to pursue a solo career with the guidance of a local music producer. In the summer of 2004, Zack opened for Grammy award-winning acts Maroon 5 and John Mayer. He did four shows with Mayer on his "Heavier Things" tour.
  
  Zack’s melodic tunes and thought provoking lyrics showcase a refreshingly mature singer-songwriter and entertainer. With a profound influence of pop, rock and jazz it is hard to pinpoint exactly what genre he’s playing in. Listening to his album, "Daydreams and Day Jobs,” the tone and texture of his vocals, acoustic guitar and instrumentals evoke Ben Folds, Coldplay, John Mayer and even Michael Buble.

Zack Weber can perform solo acoustic, with live percussion, or as part of a two to five piece band. He has 35 original songs and is available to play up to a 2 hour set. The set can be upped 3 hours when he integrates his versions of cover material.
