Biography

The Shoeless Revolution: Minneapolis/St. Paul: A child of the Funk Rock and Pop movement is a group that will mesmerize concert goers with a highly danceable fusion of hum and ferocity that will keep the rug-cutters dancing in the front and the wallflowers captivated in the back. After being born in the sweet funky core of the La Crosse, Wisconsin music scene nearly four years ago they have relocated to Minneapolis with the hopes of assembling a new crowd of ears. Having made their way through snow and detours they’ve set their chassis to their craft and traversed the Midwest for nearly five years (that’s almost a pentade!), fueled by a hankering for big experience and tiny discoveries. Constantly changing, forever aware, irrefutably footwear impaired, they’ll make you move in ways that haven’t even been invented yet!

  Although it may be slightly confusing trying to keep your local La Crosse bands straight, The Shoele...Although it may be slightly confusing trying to keep your local La Crosse bands straight, The Shoeless Revolution is fairly easy to identify. Just look for the group without any footwear and the Jazz/Funk/Reggae/Rock fusion that's made a significant impact throughout the La Crosse, Wisconsin, and Minnesota area.
  Created three years ago at an impromptu gig for one of UW-L's Cellar events, Shoeless Revolution has already participated in the 10,000 Lakes Festival in Minnesota and the New Earth Festival in Fall Creek. Not to mention the numerous gigs around local La Crosse bars, a show at the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis, and even an opening gig for the Flaming Lips concert this past summer.
  The group tries to focus on bringing new music to their fans with both originally composed pieces and unique covers. "Whether it be an up-tempo funk or a laid-back groove, we want to feel good playing it, and at the same time bring something new to the listener's ear," says drummer and vocalist Reed Grimm.
  With the added kick of a three horn section and a cross-pollination of musical styles, The Shoeless Revolution delivers an amazingly upbeat and entertaining performance that draws a crowd at every show, whether it includes returning fans, or newcomers who are drawn in by the energy on stage.

The high-energy septet laid down some brass-backed groves that had asses shaking from the front of the stage to the rear of the store. Reed Grimm was his usual impressive self, simultaneously taking lead vocals, hyping up the crowd and keeping time on the drunk kit – a rare feat for any band anywhere. The Shoeless standards were well-executed and their cover choices – including the String Cheese Incident’s “Jellyfish”, the Meters’ “Cissy Strut” and the Beatles “Oh, Darling” – were surprising. Grimm killed it on the final number, Bill Withers’ salacious “Use me.” With a microphone curled around this face like a mid-1990s Garth Brooks, Grimm was standing, sitting, waving drumsticks at the crowd, nailing the high hat and yalping vocals in the perfectly desperate tone. It was an impressive performance to tone. It was an impressive performance to close the night, one that probably won’t be repeated.

They added an alto and bari sax and a trumpet to the group to funk it up, and it worked.
