Particularly noticeable during “San Jose” has to be the guitar work, which lifts the track to an entirely new plateau. The band marries together a much grittier feel with a punk style that will have listeners singing along after only a few listens. The band wears their emotions on their sleeve, and dictates how each of the tracks on “The Razorblade Diaries” goes through guitar riffs and drum lines.
“All I’ve Become” represents a hit for Revel 9, as the track possesses a much more dark and brooding feel than had previously been present on the album. During this track, Revel 9 builds off the work of acts like Papa Roach and Three Days Grace, even as the intense drum work represents an entirely new beast than either of those acts. “Lay My Head” has a more dust-swept feel to it that showcases that Revel 9 can still throw their listeners a curveball even at the last bits and pieces of the EP. It is hard for a band to showcase their ability over the course of an EP, but Revel 9 is able to pinpoint their sound and have listeners hungering for more all over the course of six tracks. The disc may end with “Without”, but I believe that the disc will keep its place through a number of replays. “Without” is the perfect end to the album, as it begins with the act showing the instrumental side of things.
After further showing their versatility through this opening, Revel 9 create harmonies in this track that will bounce around listener’s heads long after the album closes up. Revel 9 do a tremendous job in closing their unique skill with this EP, and I have no doubt in my mind that the act would even shine better in a live format. So, pick up a copy of “The Razorblade Diaries” and check to see whenever the band may be coming to your neck of the woods.

Formerly known as Gee Davey, Revel 9 is locked, loaded and ready to give you ‘The Razorblade Diaries’. This is the band’s debut EP under the name Revel 9 and they are excited to get these songs out to the masses. The group hails from Long Island, NY and is made up of: founder, guitarist & lead singer/songwriter DJ Pearlman, Michael Bontempi on drums, Ray Kuhner on bass and their newest member Matthew Dower on rhythm guitar. Revel 9 is ready to make some serious noise!
I couldn’t help but think of Bush’s ‘Razorblade Suitcase’ album when I saw the EP title. I own this record and highly enjoy it, so if Pearlman & company could live up to the quality of ‘Razorblade Suitcase’ I would be very satisfied. ‘The Razorblade Diaries’ nothing like Bush and their 1996 release but Revel 9 rocks out respectfully in its own right with six well-recorded tracks. The professional touch was there and the substance was evident so let’s go!
The gist of this recording revolves around the concept of boy meets girl, boy loses girl and boy does anything to win the girl back. This whole story & creative process was portrayed extremely well by the Revel 9 boys. As soon as you hit Play you bear witness to quick ‘n’ punchy rock on “San Jose”. This hard-nosed rock sensation carries on throughout the entire 6-song set. On the track “Another Mistake”, I’m hearing an edgy & raw sound complete with a kick-ass garage band effect. These guys are just jammin’ away and havin’ a good time so let’s join the Revel 9 party! The hard rock influence is heard loud & clear on this disc with guitar riffs that rock your world! The vocals are catchy and fit in perfectly with the band’s whole approach.
Overall, I am very impressed with how each member made it all work as Revel 9 is in the building! They offer up an appealing sound that is bound to catch on like crazy! You owe it to yourself to check out Long Island’s own Revel 9 and their debut release ‘The Razorblade Diaries’. The diary has just begun and so I can’t wait to see what they add to it next!

Then you’d remember our latest PEV feature as Gee Davey, a musical staple that brought you some amazing indie rock – just check out the record “She Sells Smiles”. But one year ago… the band re-launched and remerged stronger than ever as the new 4-piece act, Revel 9. Lead vocalist DJ Pearlman, Mike Bontempi, Ray Kuhner, Matt Dower have come together to bring to you their latest release, “The Razorblade Diaries”.
DJ says “This record is definitely our “defining” record. We had laid out the whole concept for the record, and had done all the pre-production on the songs almost 18 months ago. It took our producer to make us take a good hard look at what we had, and where we wanted to go with it, and more importantly, it took our willingness to see what he was saying and do the work that needed to be done. I’ve never worked a record like this before.”
Revel 9 doesn’t take your average approach to crafting a tune – they take it to a whole new level: “We spend so much time writing, playing, changing, correcting, fixing and adjusting every single song we do until it’s as perfect as it is going to get. By the time we’re done with it, there’s not a single part of any R9 song that’s bland or weak or boring or wrong… at least not to us.” The band will be pushing hard to promote “The Razorblade Diaries” on this side of the country, so check their schedule. There’s a whole lot more to get into, so keep reading for all the answers to the XXQ’s.

Long Island, New York four-piece rock outfit Gee Davey gained a member, changed its band name and
releasing a stunning start to its next chapter.
In their debut release, Revel 9 delivers a dynamic package in The Razorblade Diaries. Lead singer, guitarist,
lyricist and founding member DJ Pearlman re-formed the group, Gee Davey, added a guitarist and created Revel
9. Comprised of Pearlman, Matthew Dower (rhythm guitar), Michael Bontempi (drums) and bassist Ray Kuhner.
At first listen to "San Jose" (track one) the introduction and arrangement is quite typical of the modern
alternative rock sound. The song has a solid chorus and pounding arrangement. It sounds a bit like a Hole song,
but minus the whining. But, something happens at the bridge of this song - the guitar work kills it. The guitar
moves into this melodic, numbing spray. This writer really fell for this song after that bridge! It is apparent the
added guitarist adds such a dynamic to these songs.
Warped Sound
Track two "Another Mistake" has quick start, the crunching guitar and malicious percussion. They lyrics are not
bad - they tell a story and really grab the listener. Once again the bridge elevates this track into a different
stratosphere. This writer preferred the guitar solo work in "San Jose" but the warped sound in "Another
Mistake" is still killer.
"All I've Become" (track three) almost sounds a bit Nine Inch Nails at first; the guitars have some sort of fista
cuffs action going on. Pearlman's voice is the star on this song - it sounds more confident and clear on this track.
He's a bit Emerson Hart (of Tonic fame) meets J.R. Richards (lead singer for Dishwalla) meets Brian Vander Ark
(of the Verve Pipe). This songs is radio ready - the growl in his voice leaves the speakers pulsating with sweat.
Stunning Guitar Bridge
Add track five to the EP's standout tracks. Sounding a bit like The Cult and Echo & The Bunnyman, "Lay My
Head" is way more harsh and amplified. Track six, "Without" again takes it to the next level. Each track on this
EP progresses and adds to a fuller sound. This song does not disappoint. Rock fans will saver this one. The
guitar bridge is stunning. It is as if it has enveloped Slash, Randy Rhoads, Eddie Van Halen, Neil Zaza and
slapped it over the head with some Rob Zombie.
Overall, this EP gets a solid A. Die-hard fans of Van Halen (David Lee Roth version; specifically those that like
the song "I'll Wait" will really like "Lay My Head."), Tonic, Hole, Collective Soul, Hinder, A Perfect Circle and
that crunchy alternative rock sound will enjoy Revel 9 and their EP The Razorblade Diaries.

And it was just that sort of exposure that caught the attention of the bands new producer. It was an in-studio performance at a regional radio station of the band’s usual opener, and expected single, “San Jose” that sealed the deal. According to the band, “We had just finished tracking the entire record when we sat down with our producer and he told us that there was no way that this song shouldn’t be a hit –that this could actually break us. And that wasn’t something we were about to walk away from.”

Gee Davey has the saying “Rock Your Dog” on all their merch, and trust me they do just that! Before the conference even started Gee Davey sent out CD’s to all of us, teasing us to get us to their show. It worked, and I’m glad it did! With great songs like “Say Another Prayer” and “She Sells Smiles” which is also their title to their new CD, it was definitely a great way to end my 2nd night at the conference. Long Island-based power trio Gee Davey then finished out the night with bare-bones, straight-up-the-gut guitar rock, performing driving original songs from their two CD’s. Singer DJ Pearlman’s guitar solo displays were fiery and precise; and his bandmates, bassist Ray Kuhner and drummer Mike Bontempi, backed him with hard-hitting, crunchy rhythms. This was spirited meat-and-potatoes rock, and a strong display to close out the second night of Millennium showcases.

When you spend that much time listening to music, you tend to get a little blase and jaded about the tunes you are hearing just due to the sheer amount of music you are listening to. But throughout all of these listening sessions, certain bands and artists literally made me sit up and take notice. One of those bands was Long Island, New York-based Gee Davey. With a sound that reminded me of a crunchier, harder Matthew Sweet, every song song on their CD “She Sells Smiles” had me reaching for the “repeat” button on the CD player.

Posted by admin on July 30th, 2008
Regardless of whether individuals are familiar with the work of Gee Davey, the one thing that can be said is that the band is dedicated. Over the course of the last five years, Gee Davey has came to the plate four times – 2003’s “Dear Theo”, 2005’s “Sparticle” EP, 2006’s “Sparticle” LP, and “She Sells Smiles”, the latest effort of the band. “Say Another Prayer” leads off this EP, and listeners will be immediately buffeted by intense guitar riffs. The style of music that Gee Davey creates during “She Sells Smiles” is difficult to categorize: there are hints of acts like Temple of the Dog, Incubus, and even hits of Fu Manchu and Monster Magnet present. While the drums and vocals are impressive enough on this introductory track, the guitars stand out beyond that, shredding with an intensity that equals that of a Dimebag Darrell or a Kirk Hammett.
“Last Song” is a track that withdraws from a straight hard rock/metal sound and moves Gee Davey towards a “Spoonman”-era Soundgarden or Foo Fighters type of approach. The drums rise to ascendency during this track, playing perfectly off the diverse array of guitar lines that are presented listeners during this track. While the average fan of hard rock will easily find something that they can appreciate on “She Sells Smiles”, Gee Davey is able to speak to a wider array of fans. This is due to the fact that the band puts together all six “She Sells Smiles” tracks together perfectly: there is no dissonance, no bum notes, and no weak arrangements to be had here. In that sense, Gee Davey is similar to Andrew WK. However, unlike Andrew WK, there is some significant differentiation to be had during the tracks on “She Sells Smiles”.
If individuals want to hear pure out party rock, they can turn on “Last Song” or the title track. If they want something a little more intricate and fulfilling, all they need to do is play “Beautiful You”. The band is flexible and can easily bring any number of different influences and genres to bear. Through all of these stylistic shifts and changes, listeners will begin to understand the allure of Gee Davey. The act is not about creating music just to be famous: they honestly want to create the best music which they are capable. They do just that on their “She Sells Smiles”, and they will likely gain an entire army of converts when listeners are able to pick up on the band’s special brand of rock music. If you like any rock, whether it be Van Halen, System of a Down, or even something like Matthew Sweet, search out a copy of “She Sells Smiles”.

Now you may ask, why quote another bands new release while reviewing the Gee Davey EP.. well its all bout how Gee Davey fuses the fairly distant past (classic rock like the Doobie Brothers, Grand Funk Railroad) into the recent more alternative past (Husker Du, Screaming Trees) and by having learnt all those ‘valuable lessons’ about melody, roughness and hints of vulnerability, creating a set of songs that live and breathe in the now and connect to hardcore and pop fans alike.
In this EP there is all the thrill of the best of the 70s rock classics without any of the stupidity and over indulgence that era flirted with, and there is the danger and wicked grins of the noise of the 80s, without the awful flipside of over produced safe metal pop.
There is a love of grunge but a wonderful ability to kick away the narcissism that riddled that genre, and an earthiness that kicks the contrived clean myspace models..I mean bands , where it hurts most.

POWERHOUSE GEE DAVEY BRINGS A
WHOLE NEW CHEERY, POPPIER VIBE TO
THEIR LATEST RELEASE ‘SHE SELLS SMILES’
Like a lot of up and coming DIY bands who eventually rock the world, the quirkily named hard edged powerhouse Gee Davey has been through some wild and woolly personnel changes since first wowing their fellow Long Islanders and indie fans everywhere with their 2003 EP Dear Theo. Now with group founder, guitarist and chief songwriter DJ Pearlman—whose former band Narcotic Gypsy opened for Ozzy Osbourne on the Ozzfest Tour—taking the reins as charismatic lead vocalist from GD’s recently departed original singer, everyone’s all smiles: the revamped lineup (including longtime drummer Michael Bontempi and new bassist Ray Kuhner), the band’s growing legion of fans and even Pearlman’s two year old daughter Charlotte, whose impish grin adorns the cover of Gee Davey’s explosive new disc She Sells Smiles.
In a state of flux for a few years, Gee Davey—whose hard hitting mix of fiery guitars, catchy melodies and poignant lyrics brings to mind superstar bands like Foo Fighters, Stone Temple Pilots and Fuel—was unable to tour in support of their critically acclaimed 2006 release Sparticle. That didn’t stop the album from becoming a major hit on the college radio circuit, with tracks like “Breathe” and “Skye” receiving airplay on over 50 CMJ (College Music Journal) reporting stations nationwide. Beyond spins on their local outlet WBAB, Sparticle made the Top Ten on several stations and—much to Pearlman’s bemused delight—got the most action in obscure places like Ruston, Louisiana and Valdez, Alaska!
Overseas, a podcaster from Germany has championed Gee Davey and played various tracks from Sparticle on his show “Next Big Thing” (www.nextbigthing.co.za); “Breathe” was a perennial in his Top Ten songs from around the globe. In addition, an acoustic version of “Fall Into You” was chosen for inclusion on Java With Javelyn, a popular promotional sampler of the country’s best indie music created by L.A. based singer-songwriter Javelyn. Texas based indie filmmaker Brandon Powell was so impressed by Gee Davey’s songs that he asked Pearlman to pen the title track for a movie he is currently in the process of editing; Pearlman chose to close She Sells Smiles with the infectious moody rocker he wrote for Powell, “Trial By Self.”
With the new lineup firmly in place, Gee Davey—whose name comes from a catch phrase on the 70’s classic animated series Davey and Goliath—is making up for lost time, launching an exciting slate of 2008 gigs with a May date at Molly Bloom’s in Amityville (yes, that Amityville!). The first show was attended mostly by friends, but the enthusiasm of the band’s new booking agent, coupled with the venue staff’s excitement over the band’s new music, led to three more bookings there on the spot. They’ve also played popular Long Island venues like Nacho Mamas, the Sound Beach Inn and The Zebra Club, and they’re looking to book some major regional festivals soon.
Since the departure of original lead singer Jack Bielata and original bassist (and band co-founder) Wayne Macgregor, Gee Davey’s overall sound has taken on a slightly more pop-oriented flavor; the heavier vibe of the band’s older songs were directly influenced by Macgregor’s intense love for bands like Tool and Hatebreed. In line with the cheerier album title, She Sells Smiles reflects not only the unique new writing dynamic between Pearlman and Bontempi but also features a major stylistic shift that evolved with songs written specifically for Pearlman on lead vocals.
“What’s cool for Gee Davey now,” Pearlman adds, “is that we’re basking in the glow of doing the kind of music we love to do, playing stuff we’re enjoying while our fans are really digging it. After being away from the stage for so long, it’s great to be out making people happy with our new music and having total strangers come up to us and saying they love the way the band is sounding. When fans give that kind of feedback, it just motivates us to keep the momentum going. It’s truly the best thing in the world.”

Review by Dan Lavagna
...[excerpt]
The first song, "Behind You", flanges into my aural horizon under the passive guitar with a rather aggressive progression. The rest of the band's accompaniment chimes in at about 12 seconds, giving off the impression right away that what I was about to hear was going to indeed have a professional quality. This is usually most easily sensed at the arrival of any percussion, which a listener can base how serious a band is going to be about the mixing process. If drums are miked and mixed correctly, then it appears obvious that the band has done their production homework, and most likely spent just as much time assuring that the other instruments would carry the same standard. Such a lesson applies to this track, the vocals are right up front, the bass is audible, and the guitar is not too saturated. Besides having the essential "good mix", I also enjoyed the chorus, where singer Jack would sing "Behind you" in that unique not-singing, yet not-speaking type of tone. I also thought that DJ Pearlman's solo was well constructed and not too over the top, as were his changes in tone and effects that spicened up the piece.
The second tune is a song dubbed "Breathe", which gets me to thinking a little more about the aim of the band's sound. If this band threw on some gritty overall mixing to the entire track, it could have easily been mistaken for a founding alternative genre hit from the early to mid nineties. The guitar work and vocal sound especially give a phenomenal throwback to bands such as Alice in Chains (although not depressing), Meat Puppets, Soundgarden (not as dark), etc. In no way am I implying that Gee Davey has joined a bandwagon or stolen a sound, but rather they make it clear that they know what their roots are and are confident to play them. This song made me appreciate the previous one even more, as I begin to further listen to the essential tweaking of effects mainly on the vocals. A peak at the lyrical content also reminds me of days spent in my youth listening to Z100 (a p op radio station), back when it still was cool and played alternative/grunge/punk. I'm surprised that a band has actually ventured back to the good old days and stuck with writing a genre that most would be unfamiliar with today. This should not be taken the wrong way, I am pretty much saying that band's today seem to be all fashion, no passion. Here we have Gee Davey, who are not afraid to bleed their alternative blood, as a diversion for those today who are growing bored with quick trends.
