Biography

THE MOI NON PLUS are an alternative drum, guitar, sample duo from Amsterdam. Their sound refers to bands like LIARS, THE LAPSE, TV ON THE RADIO & SONIC YOUTH.

THE MOI NON PLUS have toured through Engeland, Germany, Belgium, Spain and the USA, played international festivals such as POPKOMM, SXSW, TGE, CMJ and MOTEL MOZAIQUE and opened for the likes of Queens of the Stone Age, Liars and They Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead.

Their self-titled debut album was released in the Benelux in October 2008.

In June 2009 the band released a remix project consisting of a book and CD. The book contains (photo)graphic remixes of The Moi Non Plus Logo by cutting edge artists, the CD contains 9 remixes of the Debut album.

The band members have strong roots in the Dutch Underground scene. Singer/Guitar player Bas Morsch is founder of the Amsterdam based indie/Art magazine That Dam! Drummer Leon Caren is the founder of Holland's Leading underground Collective SUBBACULTCHA!

  So after being stonewalled at the Mercury, I hopped on down to Cake Shop for a showcase from Dutch m...So after being stonewalled at the Mercury, I hopped on down to Cake Shop for a showcase from Dutch music mag-label Subbacultcha! You know you’re at a show full of people from the Netherlands when (a) all of the women are beautiful, (b) all the dudes are smelly, and (c) everybody’s drinking Heineken. The random stop-in proved to be a beautiful mistake as the duo The Moi Non Plus shredded it up right. The band played around with song structures at the beginning of the set but eventually settled into a terrific riotous punk pattern. I suppose these sorts of discoveries are what this thing is all about…

  Another Dutch delight, The Moi Non Plus began their set at 9:15 in Cake Shop’s basement. The simple,...Another Dutch delight, The Moi Non Plus began their set at 9:15 in Cake Shop’s basement. The simple, two-man band amazingly possessed enough energy to follow their fellow friends, Bonne Aparte, and considering their number, may have equaled their strength and then some set-wise. The duo just released their debut album on October 6th, calling it “art rock,” markedly influenced by bands like Sonic Youth and TV on the Radio. Their loud, choppy delivery, chug-along symbiosis between flailing drums and guitar, and disjointed screaming were the perfect soundtrack to watching drummer, Leon Caren (proud founder of Subbacultcha!) beat his drums into an absolute, and messy pulp. Also of note was the song apparently called, “I’ve Got A Heart the Size of an Elephant,” which surprisingly changed the pace of the music from alternative, kamikaze rock to a pleasantly more sedate, melancholy drift. Who knew they had it in them?
  
  The Moi Non Plus are a quirky and talented band rising in popularity throughout Europe. You should definitely check them out, and one thing I will say… sorry to singer/guitarist Bas Morsch, but Leon Caren takes the cake for outrageous set of lungs. I haven’t heard wailing like that since I accidentally stapled my pinky when I was four.

  Starting with Cake Shop, I saw two Dutch acts, The Moi Non Plus and Adept, in a showcase put on by t...Starting with Cake Shop, I saw two Dutch acts, The Moi Non Plus and Adept, in a showcase put on by the record company Subbacultcha!. The Moi Non Plus (translation: "The Me Neither") are a duo on guitar and drums with some loops/samples to fill out the sound. It was loud and it was punk, bringing to mind Sonic Youth and No Age. Like No Age, the drummer of Moi Non Plus takes on a lot of the singing duty. And PS, said drummer was absolutely riveting (not just because he's hot). Songs included "Ha Ha Ha Ha" ("And you can laugh along if you want cause this shit is funny," the drummer prefaced) and "Wake Up." At this point, I felt pretty happy with my CMJ "see whoever" strategy.

  Fortuna che al Cake Shop mi aspetta lo showcase dell'etichetta olandese Subbacultcha! (primo dei mom...Fortuna che al Cake Shop mi aspetta lo showcase dell'etichetta olandese Subbacultcha! (primo dei momenti Trompe Le Monde di questa CMJ, v. sabato). Arrivo e faccio in tempo a beccarmi gli ultimi due tiratissimi pezzi dei tetri e sperimentali Bonne Aparte. Buoni a tal punto che mi prendo pure il disco (che ora ascolto solo quando fuori c'e' il sole e sono di buon umore, che senno' nella migliore delle ipotesi o mi spavento o mi deprimo). Di seguito assisto a una delle performances migliori della settimana, quella del duo chitarra-batteria The Moi Non Plus. Molto bravi e spettacolari: vedere un batterista spaccare un ride da quanto pesta e' sempre cosa che rida' fiducia nel genere umano. TMNP sono leggermente piu' accessibili dei Bonne Aparte con tante influenze che pescano dritto tra i miei artisti preferiti: Fugazi, Cop Shoot Cop, Sonic Youth di Sister (e tutti i loro derivati, vedi Ikara Colt...), tra i vari. Preso anche il loro di cd (ho fugato ogni dubbio quando ho sentito che una canzone, peraltro molto bella, si intitola Jil Sander Makes Your Eyes Black).

  Amsterdam staat niet bepaald bekend om z’n spannende bandjescultuur. The Moi Non Plus is een positieve uitzondering. Logisch, want de adem van Blues Brother Castro - een van de weinige echt leuke hoofdstedelijke bandjes van de afgelopen tien jaar - waart er rond. The Moi Non Plus is stukken steviger, hectischer en experimenteler. Denk oude Wire, The Fall, Shellac en Liars. Echte Opscene-muziek dus, zal de
  oudgediende fluisteren. En dat werd weer eens tijd. Nee, van de stuurse, monotone, harde ritmes van dit Amsterdamse duo is het moeilijk genoeg krijgen. Nu maar hopen dat ze er een trend mee zetten in de hoofdstad. Ook qua design van hoesjes, trouwens. Want ook daar zit het bij The Moi Non Plus snor.

The Moi Non Plus is een Amsterdams lawaaiduo met zang, gitaar, drums en samples. Bas Morsch en Leon Caren toerden al zo’n beetje de hele wereld rond voordat ze dit debuutalbum maakten.
  
  Schreeuwzang en stuiterritmes zijn hun voornaamste wapenfeiten, verpakt in brutale songs met titels als Ha ha ha en Jill Sander makes your eyes black. Soms klinken ze streng industriëel, in het samplewerkstuk I am one of de onwankelbare muur van staccatogitaren I want it.
  
  Het kan ook subtieler, in het aanvankelijk gevoelig gezongen I’ve got the heart dat uiteindelijk toch weer ontaardt in een explosie van lawaai. Op papier lijkt dat allemaal vermoeiender dan het is. The Moi Non Plus houdt het interessant met spitsvondige klanksculpturen, met dank aan instrumentbouwer Yuri Landman die de mysterieuze Bachelor QS leverde. Is het een gitaar? Is het een keyboard? Is het een ruimteschip? De spontaniteit en het livegevoel maken dit album bepaald geen easy listening, maar wel een goede reclame voor opwindende optredens.

  De naam is een directe verwijzing naar de hit Je t'aime van über-geilaard Serge Gainsbourg. Maar wie...De naam is een directe verwijzing naar de hit Je t'aime van über-geilaard Serge Gainsbourg. Maar wie op basis daarvan de zuchtmeisjespop verwacht, krijgt al bij de eerste maten van dit debuutalbum het deksel snoeihard op de neus. The Moi Non Plus is bepaald niet behaagziek, maar opwindend is de gitaarnoise van het Amsterdamse duo wel degelijk.
  
  De band bestaat uit Bas Morsch en Leon Caren. De laatste is bekend van zijn andere groep, Blues Brother Castro, en vooral van de door hem georganiseerde Subbacultcha!-avonden, waarmee hij de bandjescultuur in Amsterdam een stevige impuls gaf. Het mag geen verbazing wekken dat The Moi Non Plus op één van die avonden bepaald niet uit de toon zou vallen. Caren en Morsch maken eigenzinnige, dwarse gitaarrock, die vooral door het gebruik van elektronica aan het alles verpulverende Big Black doet denken. Ook Sonic Youth en The Fall lijken een inspiratie.
  
  Daarmee neemt The Moi Non Plus nadrukkelijk afstand van de toegankelijke pop die op de Nederlandse podia gangbaar is. De minimale, repetitieve songs moeten het vooral van hun intensiteit hebben en komen live dan ook beter tot hun recht dan op plaat. Wat niet wegneemt dat deze eerste proeve een fijne demonstratie van tegendraads talent is. (JERRY GOOSSENS)

  Bald vierzig Jahre ist es her, dass Jane Birkin hauchte: “Je t’aime…” und Serge Gainsbourg zurückraunte “…moi non plus”.
  
  Und wie man das heute so macht: Flugs den bestimmten Artikel des Englischen vorangesetzt und man hat einen Bandnamen. Einen sehr schönen, in diesem Fall: The Moi Non Plus.
  
  Mit Gainsbourg haben The Moi Non Plus ausser ihrem Namen wenig gemein. Sie beschreiben sich selber als “a loud drum guitar sample duo from Amsterdam”. Auf ihrem Debutalbum, das im Oktober erscheint, erinnern sie streckenweise sehr an Death From Above 1979.
  
  Düster, sehr rhythmuslastig und doch mit einem guten Gespür für songdienliche Melodien - das sind The Moi Non Plus, mein persönlicher Geheimtipp des Monats.

• REVIEW: THE MOI NON PLUS - THE MOI NON PLUS [+ Show ]
  

  Waarom zou je als relatief jonge Nederlandse band minstens een jaar lang iedere duistere krocht van ...Waarom zou je als relatief jonge Nederlandse band minstens een jaar lang iedere duistere krocht van het vaderlandse zaaltjescircuit verkennen, als je meteen naar het buitenland kunt met een geslaagd debuut in de kontzak? Bas Morsch (gitaar, samples, zang, ook in Sal) en Leon Caren (drums, samples zang, ook voorman Blues Brother Castro) vormen samen heftig rockduo The Moi Non Plus ('De Ik Ook Niet') en vertrokken op de dag van de release van hun debuut naar het buitenland, naar Berlijn om precies te zijn. Later deze maand speelt The Moi Non Plus ook in Londen en zijn er meerdere optredens in New York gepland, met onder meer Bonne Aparte en Adept. Ambitie is geen vies woord: zo kan het dus ook.
  
  Het titelloze debuutalbum werd zaterdag echter 'gewoon' in thuishaven Amsterdam gepresenteerd, waar de band al vaak te zien was in de clubs, met een trommelvlies splijtende, energieke show in het knusse Bitterzoet.
  
  Zowel live als op de twaalf tracks tellende cd valt direct op hoe The Moi Non Plus ook al een duo is. dat net als veel buitenlandse collega-tweetallen met de meest eenvoudige middelen toch een bij vlagen overweldigende geluidsmuur weet te creëren. Zonder daarbij in echte liedjes met kop en staart te vervallen overigens, zoals dat bij duo's als White Stripes, Blood Red Shoes en No Age - geen directe vergelijkingen! - ondanks de bakken lawaai wel het geval is.
  
  Al ligt het tempo soms nog zo hoog, vaak lijkt The Moi Non Plus expres in te houden. Hooguit in climaxen speelt de band voluit om in passages daarvoor zorgvuldig een tergende spanning op te bouwen. Dat de band soms bewust gas inhoudt, lijkt soms jammer, maar de bedoeling is duidelijk: uiteindelijk is het goed voor spanningsopbouw en worden de verschillende overrompelingseffecten erdoor versterkt.
  
  Dat hoor je meteen in snelle, ongemakkelijke opener Ha Ha Ha met manische zang en dito ritme, waarna zo'n eerste, hard aankomende lawaai-uitbarsting pas volgt in Jill Sander Makes Your Eyes Black, wat ook voor een ijzersterke finale van de New Yorkse Liars had kunnen doorgaan. Het zijn beklemmende, dissonante en korte nummers, waarin je echte melodieën met een vergrootglas moet zoeken.
  
  The Moi Non PlusMaar die mis je niet: zeker niet als bijvoorbeeld de ene na de andere rake mokerslag van drumklappen met gitaaraanslag wordt uitgedeeld in Where Is Everything ('watch out!' luidt niet voor de niets de waarschuwing) of het ruige Johnny je om de oren slaat. In de tweede helft blijkt The Moi Non Plus toch nog een onverwacht melodische kant te hebben, als Geert de Groot (oud-Claw Boys Claw) een stukje bas meespeelt op What If We Do It, terwijl het onheilspellende Sudden Impact (met vroege Sonic Youth-invloeden) onverwacht toch nog een relatief poppy uiteinde krijgt.
  
  Het snerpende I Want It blinkt dan weer uit in beklemming, terwijl het ritmisch erg lekkere Wake Up de harde finale is die deze plaat verdient. Dat laatste nummer wordt live niet zelden uitgebouwd tot een minuten durende noise-orgie, waarbij Morsch eigenhandig gitaarlaag op laag samplet. Dat horen we in de huiskamer dan net neit terug, maar ach, des te meer reden om de band snel nog eens live te zien in de buurt. Als The Moi Non Plus met dit debuut tenminste niet razendsnel aansluiting vindt met de internationale underground en daardoor constant in het buitenland speelt. (****)
