Biography

The Stevedores formed under the canopy of the trust fund fueled drug / sex scene at Sarah Lawerence College in Westchester New York during the early part of the new century. They played extensively around the campus in ballrooms, bedrooms, and girls dorms before moving to larger venues in New York City. They played a series of shows at the Knitting Factory in lower Manhattan during the spring of 2006 performing as "Canfield Devil House".
In June 2006 after recording "Tamuawok." the band moved to Madison Wisconsin under the name "The Stevedores" to begin work on their next album "The Straw That Broke The Camel's Heart". They set up a studio in a rented house on Gorham St. at the backbone of the Isthmus near James Madison Park and began recording. While preparing for the Thanksgiving Day party Lead Singer Spencer Bell was rushed to the hospital by his younger brother, complaining of stomach pains. He was diagnosed with Adrenal Cancer and passed away on December 3rd in Madison. He was 20 years old.
On February 4th, 2007, in an effort to figure out how they would sound as a band, The Stevedores entered the RPM challenge to record an entire album in the month of February. They finished recording
"This Is Very Important Message* on February 25th, emerging with a new sound that is as yet undescribable.
The Stevedores performed regularly during the summer of 2007, playing such venues as The High Noon Saloon, The Orpheum Theatre in Wisconsin.
After finishing work band on an E.P. of new songs in August 2007, the band has scattered to the corners of the country, hoping to reconvene in March of 2008 to perform in support of this recording, entitled The Straw That Broke The Camel's Heart.

  The Stevedores: New York City's loss is Madison['s] Gain!  A review of "Tamuawok" ? By Ryan Stagg? ?...The Stevedores: New York City's loss is Madison['s] Gain!  A review of "Tamuawok" ? By Ryan Stagg? ? If ever there was a band that shouldn’t give a damn about a review or an opinion it should be The Stevedores.  Why New York hasn’t gobbled up this band, made them the new trend...is beyond my comprehension.  One [city's] loss is another’s gain.  Enter Madison.  Good people sitting around drinking whiskey, listening to music, waiting for the next God of rock to re-spawn like a Christ-like magician, the wait is over... The Stevedores stand alone like so many of us waiting for the right moment when things just fall into place.  Reminiscent of The Doors, The Stevedores add a bit more character, and a touch of funk.  This band can definitely hold [its] own.  "There’s life outside the city and it only gets prettier the further you get from all these humans."  The Stevedores are a stranger no more and the world is a better place.

  The other night a group from the math department went to the High Noon to see some local bands play; I think we made up about a quarter of the audience. The highlight of the night was a short set by The Stevedores, who played about half originals and half oldies (”Maybelline,” “Love Potion # 9″) in a great reverby, tired, end-of-the-world way. When they played covers they sounded like a band you might see in a David Lynch movie. When they played originals they sounded like a much mellower Man Man.
  
  Not really local for long, I’m afraid — it seems they moved here from New York last year and are moving to Austin shortly. But it was nice to have them here.
