Biography

Tanya Brody and Matthew Gurnsey play a plethora of exotic instruments ranging from bohdran & concertina to harp & guitar; psaltery and pennywhistles to name just a few. Their vocal harmonies have made people laugh, cry and feel everything in between.

The Muses add new life and vibrancy to old songs as well as adding exciting original material to the Celtic repertoire. Since the moment they chose to blend their voices in song they began captivating the hearts and minds of every audience from Hawaii to Maine, Vancouver to Florida, weddings and pubs to libraries, colleges and universities, concert series, and main-stages at Scottish Games and Celtic Festivals. The Muses perform with a ferocity and strength of heart that embodies the music they love so dearly.

Seeking the return of traditional Celtic folk songs by adding a new twist (and on a stage overflowing with instruments), The Muses breathe new life into a music that will never die. “Through our music you can feel the green shamrocks underfoot, catch the aroma of a distant salt sea, and taste the highland rain upon your lips.”

Setlist

Programs:

Full Standard set; Come enjoy a rollicking good show! Everything from upbeat drinking songs and sea shanties to love ballads and old standards. The Muses break out all the instruments for this set showing their versatility in performance as well as repertoire. 1-3 hours

“Singer/Songwriter” set (all original); The Muses have written many wonderful original pieces including songs about Sirens and love songs for each other. They’ll also toss in a couple from their own favorite singer/songwriters for good measure. 1-2 hours

Irish set (traditional and original); Songs from Erin’s green shores. Traditional songs that range from ancient to turn of the last century music hall with some modern and original pieces thrown in. 1 hour

Scottish set (traditional and original); The sound will make you long for the lochs. Old traditions blend with modern ditties for a journey through the misty highlands and the lowland moors. 1 hour

Instrument Education Set; The Muses take you through an exploration of all of their instruments, telling about the origins of the instrument, how it is played and (of course) demonstrating the instrument in performance and song. 1 hour

“Songs of the Sea”; An hour full of sea shanties and sea lore. Focusing primarily on the lives of sailors aboard the whaling and shipping vessels but also drifting into the realms of legend and love. 1 hour

“The Ballad as History”; The true history was written by the people. Many of the best ballads tell the story more accurately (and poetically) than any historian could ever contrive. We explore actual historical events and how they were recorded in song. 1 hour

“Legends and Fairy Tales”; A magical path leads us through the realm of sirens, knights, witches and fair folk. Weaving tales of love, betrayal, help and healing, even drunken rides through the haunted woods. Enchantment awaits. 1 hour

"Love Songs through the Ages": A romantic journey through love songs, both happy and tragic, from ancient times up to modern music, ending with love songs Tanya and Matt have written for each other. 1 hour

"The Turning of the Year" - The Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, was celebrated by the whole town dancing, singing and burning bonfires long into the night to ensure that the sun would return the following day and the days would get longer. Come share a winter’s evening with us to celebrate the solstice in the Celtic Tradition. A journey full of song, story, legend and myth. Traditional carols and rituals as well as original tellings of old tales. Come together as a community and help ensure the Turning of the Year. 1-2 hours
