Biography

PRESS:

"A group quickly distinguishing itself as a premier act in a sea of bands." "...Mckenzie’s gritty bluesman baritone uplifted by his classically trained fiancé’s powerful and seductive voice. Rioux hit her stride with a crowd-pleasing cover of Janis Joplin’s 'Piece of my Heart'; she is without a doubt the only performer I’ve seen pull off a worthy take on Joplin’s classic. "
- Playgroundboston.com

"The Few is taking the local music scene by storm behind the bluesy, powerful vocals of lead singer Jaime Rioux."
-The Herald News

"...The dual female/male lead vocal is like having vanilla and chocolate soft serve in the same funky cone."
-The Noise

"With their positive vibe and funky groove, their innovative sound comes from an eclectic mix of classic rock, reggae and motown, infused with small bursts of blues folk and country"
- Limelight Magazine

"I must say this CD has a way to get you moving. Overall, with the dynamic lyrics, great guitar work and just great groove feeling you get when listening to it makes it hard to put this CD away."

BIO

The Few formed in 2005 as a trio of Berklee graduates, featuring current members Kevin and Jaime MacKenzie alongside Zeke Panitz on keys. Drummer Shaemus Shepard was added after the release of their debut album "South Side of Somewhere" in 2006.

This lineup remained intact through Summer of 2009, a period in which they released an EP titled "Morning Static." This EP launched them into relevance in the Boston and Providence music scenes with its superlative songwriting and intricate male/female vocal harmonies.

The Summer of 2009 marked a new chapter in the story of The Few, with the relocation of Zeke Panitz to Ireland. In addition to the band's signature keyboard rhythm style Panitz also handled some vocals and a large portion of the band's songwriting, meaning his departure left a large hole to fill.

Enter Ryan Martin, bassist extraordinaire and luthier for Becker Guitars. Martin has stepped in seamlessly with his custom-made bass guitars and has added a whole new element to the band's existing catalogue of songs by replacing melodic keyboard parts with basslines both driving and intricate.

The establishment of a more traditional rhythm section has allowed MacKenzie to truly blossom as a guitarist, and has enabled his wife to bring her powerful voice even more into the spotlight with additional singing responsibilities.

The Few is currently in the studio working on a full-length record under the guidance of acclaimed producer James Willetts (Carlos Santana, Jerry Garcia, Josh Groban). This album will feature Martin's bass on every track, which will unquestionably result in an entirely new sound for the band. Look for The Few to make a serious impact in 2010 with the release of the new LP and an aggressive touring schedule!

Setlist

We can fill up to 4 hours with originals and covers. Our original catalogue is extensive, spanning 3 albums worth of material with a range of different styles.

Typically our set consists of 45 minutes worth of originals from our as-yet unreleased new album and ourlast EP, with maybe one cover thrown into the mix.

Our covers reach a wide audience. We'll play an old blues tune, go into some Motown or Classic rock, and then throw out our take on more modern music. We can cover anyone from Janis to Aretha to Tom Petty to Johnny Cash - our male/female vocal combination allows for us to tribute a vast range of artists.
