Biography

Over the past 3 years, the music of Songwriters Hall of Fame member Steve Schultz has been described as "fresh," "engaging," "anthemic," and "both old and new at the same time...like meeting someone for the first time and knowing immediately that you will be fast friends." But Steve, himself, chooses to describe his work in a different way: "I look at my music as if Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, and Ben Folds had a love child," says Steve. "I realize that might be disturbing imagery, but musically its on target. Sometimes I like simple harmonies, sometimes complex; and my lyrics can range from deeply personal to offbeat and quirky."

In summer 2007, Steve released his debut CD, "A Thin Line," and in addition to continuously selling CDs and gaining new fans, he has:

-received play on multiple radio stations
-been a featured guest on both radio and television
-participated in the 2008 CAT Songwriting Festival featuring Paul Leka ("Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye) and Jeff Silbar ("Wind Beneath My Wings")
-competed in the Williamsburg Live Songwriting Competition
-participated in ASCAP New York Sessions with Rob Thomas
-participated the 2009 ASCAP "I Create Music" EXPO in Los Angeles
-been recognized by the Songwriters Hall of Fame with admission to their spring 2010 songwriters workshop, which he recently completed
-built Bottoms Up Recording Studio with bassist Seth Rivers and drummer Chris Snykus
-on May 3, Steve launched his album donation campaign, and has since raised over $1,350 directly from fans in support of his new recording project.

As a live performer -- both with his band and as a solo/acoustic act -- Steve's mix of originals and choice covers bring an energy and excitement to his performances that engage listeners from the coffeehouse, to the bar, to the music club. Steve has supported such acts as Jeff Silbar, John Powhida (of The Rudds), Chris Cubeta & the Liars Club, and more.

Steve Schultz is a member of ASCAP, the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the SongCircle, and Taxi. He is currently working on recording his sophomore release, as well as running Bottoms Up Recording Studio with bassist Seth Rivers and drummer Chris Snykus. Steve is open and available for co-writing.

  Produced by Schultz and guitarist Jeff Berner, "A Thin Line" often has a John Mellencamp-esque anthemic Americana vibe, with chiming guitars and a big beat, as in the title track "A Thin Line." That theme continues with "Sign" stocked with majestic piano fills by Matt Wiltrout that recall Woodstock's David Sancious (who made the early Springsteen records sound so important).
  
  "Hold On" has a rolling beat and an anxious heart. The Saturday night ode "Standing at the Edge Of the World" has an earnest approach, while "Step Right Up" has a relentless rhythm.
  
  Schultz' capable pipes aren't going to dazzle the judges on "American Idol," but they get the job done. A fine first effort.

Whether with his band or as a solo/acoustic act, many of the songs in the set list remain the same; the main differences are the arrangements of the songs and the number of cover songs included. For solo/acoustic and acoustic duo shows, set length can be up to 3 hours, not including breaks. For full band shows, set length can be over 2 hours, or two 1-hour sets.
