Biography

A 4-piece throw back to the days when rock and roll was a pocket of groove and unapologetically loud, The Outside's barrage of melodic musings and off-kilter rhythms intrigue and excite. Embodying elements of the Deftones, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the Pumpkins, the New York group brands stages with an unmistakably claimed sound that, in the end, leaves raised fists and silver dollar eyed audiences everywhere. The forceful backbone of drummer Damien Girardi and bassist Will Luttrell, paired with the sheer melodic thread of Ben Kennedy’s guitar, leaves singer Tree free to herald the charge with soulful belts of song significant to the times we live in. Channeling the strife of daily living and the perseverance of will, The Outside holds nothing back. Ever.

  New York's Outside might remind you of early Smashing Pumpkins, but they have their own thing going ...New York's Outside might remind you of early Smashing Pumpkins, but they have their own thing going on as well. Singer Tree is one powerhouse of a performer, delivering her swooping anthemic lyrics across an avalanche of tumbling toms, hand/foot combos, and crash-riding courtesy of drummer Damien. Something Urgent was self-produced by the band, and though an outside hand probably would have tightened up a couple sections, the band's rock grandeur is undeniable and highly appealing.

Frontwoman Tree's vocals are spit out Kittie-style or released in a sugary Beth orton vibrato. The music is heavy but not abrasive or ham-fisted; in fact, the arrangements are befitting a Prog-Metal band (think Tool, not Dream Theatre). Dynamics are all over the board and also maintained long enough to establish a mood rather than toggling back and forth for effect. Having said all of that, fans of Evanescence will probably love them, too. Their second EP, You Are The Alpha...Gracias Por Nada, has generated a huge buzz, and demand for their stellar live show has them gassing up the van more and more often (including three trips to Cincy this year). With festival and magazine appearances increasing exponentially, The Outside are truly a band on their way up, but definitely one that will make it there with their artistic integrity intact. The next seventeen minutes plus, however, proved a blissful rock n’ roll listening experience. The New York-based band’s female vocalist, Tree, has great range, capable of belting out lyrics over crunching guitars one minute, then turning warm, seductive and soothing the next.The music is beautiful at every gain and distortion level. I’m really looking forward to future efforts.

The quartet’s latest five-track release hits hard yet knows when to tone it down so the differences in songs like “10%” feel that much more striking. Able to maintain a dreamy female vocal that viciously morphs into a guttural growl without warning help The Outside fine tune its usually dissonant yet uniquely angular wall of sound that at times is reminiscent of Tool clashing with Helmet, especially on the warped cosmic blues-metal of “Milky Way”. Dynamic as hell, heavy as lead, and enthralling throughout, this disc contains some post hardcore of the most volatile variety and should be handled with such regard.

This is emphasized by the incredible voice of female vocalist, Tree. Her mission, which seems to be going quite well, is to prove that women aren't limited in what they can be musically. Gone are the days when women were relegated to all female groups or acoustic guitar love songs. Tree can switch her pipes from melodic crooning to hardcore rants without dropping a note, all the while proving that not only can women bring it, but in this case, they bring it a lot harder.
  
  They have recently released their five song EP, You Are The Alpha...Gracias Por Nada, which has been praised for its kick ass instrumentals and originality.

The Outside’s love of dynamics is obvious; the group creatively mixes decibel changes into its sound. Another thing the band does is incorporate accessible pop melodies into the most unexpected places.

Their music, cutting edge, their stage presence, flawless and their energy is ecstatic. I was nearly knocked of my feet when they took the stage hostage; I honestly had no idea what to expect with the current state of music, but alas I was shocked yet once again. The moment The Outside came in, all life came to a halt. I had truly found myself in the center of scorned beauty and uplifting despair.
  
  The Outside leaves you in love with a shattered heart while flying with broken wings. There is no definition for the excitement and pleasure given by the hands of these talented people. In music there are few moments where you feel euphoric, the drug that is music has been contaminated for far too long... But never fret, when The Outside finds itself on stage, you will find yourself as high as a kite.
