Biography

Hailer’s second album Another Way is as strange as it is familiar. The two years between albums saw Hailer grow exponentially as a live band and as song writers, yielding a bounty of material to explore in the studio. Although the psychedelic rock influences of the bands 2010 debut album Good Canyon are recognisable, Another Way is a sizeable departure. From the paranoid and dark "Spooky Clams", to the acoustic sentimentality of "Bright Lights",
the joyous and upbeat “Anyway I Can” and the raw power of "Blue Star" and "Postcard". The mood of the record shifts with songs taking on multiple personalities fused together by
atmospheric motifs.

With the addition of guitarist and engineer Pete Beringer, Hailer opened up to new possibilities. The pressure of high priced studios and the invisible hand of "pay by the hour anxiety" were gone. In January 2012 in Sydney Australia, the band took the clocks off the walls and allowed time for experimentation and deconstruction in Pete’s studio compound. Progress was rapid - spirits were high. Only a matter of weeks later, Pete, who engineered the album, badly broke his shoulder. Delays to livelihood and album progress ensued by way of surgery, sling and analgesics...the chips were down. After 6 months of recording, editing, dubbing and mixing - the band was at a loss at how to finish the album.

As luck would have it, a recommendation from a mutual friend in New York City led them to Nick Stumpf, musician and producer whose credits include French Kicks, Caveman and Coke Weed. Mixing began in August 2012 and the collaboration was seamless. Nick’s patented ethereal sound was countered by the directness of the music resulting in a lush sounding record that remains at the front of your ears.

Hailer will be touring the east coast of Australia in May and June 2013. They band will then be relocating to the USA in late August, where they will tour extensively to promote Another Way. Another Way has already received great support from college radio, with at least 83 stations adding the record to their playlists in the first three weeks. The album debuted at #16 on the CMJ weekly adds charts, which was a stellar result for an unknown self released band and record.

Hailer will be running extensive publicity campaigns in the USA with Green Light Go promotions, as well as continuing their intensive radio campaign.

  A wholly decent classicist indie-rock record – surprise much?
  
  Sydneysiders Hailer do not make trendy music but they’re pretty damn good at doing their thing: simple, time-honoured harmonic guitar pop which ticks all the right Bs – Beatles, Byrds, Big Star. Additionally, there’s Wilco influence in the sporadic alt-country flourishes and some slight psychedelic touches (like the circular opening riff and thudding bass on the multi-part Clouds) here and there, but that’s all as far as ‘swirly’ bits are concerned. As much as I hate applying Jack Johnson-reeking terms like ‘chilled’ and ‘cruisy’, the trio’s debut album Good Canyon indeed makes for a perfect beach listening sans smelly-dread surf-folk associations. On the relaxed Forever, the droning tambura sets up much of the vibe, while power-pop ditty Je M’en Fous echoes of both prime-era Alex Chilton and Teenage Fanclub with its jangly/fuzzy guitars and Keep You Happy strolls along to an unhurried strum. Phil Orr’s breathy, slightly boyish voice is almost meditative in its quality, only breaking into anguish on Angel Of Snow and the near-10-minute, VU/Luna-redolent epic Dead Bodies – on which Hailer, being classicists, stretch out with absolute conviction. The iconic G-Em-C-D and C-G-D-G (with the capo on the third fret on the latter) acoustic progressions get a due run on the wistful, slow-paced Distant Land and Lou Reed-esque The Redundancy Song. Sunday morning, praise the dawning ... you know the rest.

Their relaxing, yet upbeat rhythms blend harmoniously with their beautifully written lyrics. The wonderfully created melodies are strong enough to keep anyone fixed on their trance like tunes. In truth they are a treat of a band, and I feel fortunate to have been introduced to them. You should too. They are not a band to be missed.

Its spiralling psychedelic melodies contain, at their very essence, perfect pop songs subtly buried beneath washes of lo-fi reverb and lineage back to classic 60’s rock. This can often be dangerous territory- bands parallel a sound from past eras of music relying simply on what came before in their wake- but Hailer appear to use specific reference points to produce something which awakens a feeling of days of old, rather than being a carefully constructed homage.
  
  The album has a sheen not present on the trio’s three previous releases, which would typically mean a band has refined their sound to a point where they have lost some of the original appeal, but Hailer seem to have defied that trend, instead using the studio to help broaden their range, unveiling new prospects and prompting the listener forward into a sun-stroked, psych-pop, dream like state.

  We know something you don't know! But we'll share it with you… you ready?…. Hailer are the personification of radness!
  
  So impressed were we with rat-bags Phil, Angus and Scott the first time we heard them was enough for us to pull them onto our inaugural Vikings Festival bill. They were back then and continue to be today, spectacular live! Even if you haven't heard them play you would definitely have seen their fucking stickers everywhere! Where many bands of late over-indulge in the power of their electric instruments, from key-tars to gee-tars, Hailer shows restraint and maturity in their choices and this has paid off in a big way with their epic EP "Like A Uniform". Their blues infused rock certainly smacks of prominent influences past and present (I'll leave them for you to pick) but nonetheless delivers something extremely unique and totally refreshing. Hailer is the kind of band that REALLY grows on you. We've teamed up with them a few times throughout the year and on every occasion my fellow sume'ites remark "fuk, I forgot how good these guys are". With the bands' solid string of shows coming up I can assure you without hesitation that Hailer will be making some waves in 2008, and not just domestically, these boys ooze international charm. Working to their favour is the fact that their music has universal appeal, you can imagine "It Ain't Easy" on the radio; "Anybody's Girl" is a TV commercial waiting to happen; and as tested by sosueme, it is completely possible to receive head while listening to "Midnight Hour"…. Ummm…

  According to Hailer’s press release they are “stoked” at the news and will be celebrating tomorrow night at a listening party at Ruby Rabbit with guest DJ Dan Haak from FBI spinning the album plus The Tracks and Matt Heath laying some acoutic versions on the crowd.

  "We started to get a vibe happening between us, we had a few different band members at first but settled on three." singer Phil Orr said.
  "There was another guitarist that didn't suit our vibe, when we got rid of him we got our mojo back. It was a bit obvious the other guy didn't fit in from the start."
  The Social Sciences and economics graduates are balancing careers while hitting the Sydney music scene and gathering air play on radio.
  "Music tastes a fair chunk of our energy, it will be good to slow things down on the work side, you seem to get in to a career trap," Orr said.
  "For me personally I think music is my calling. That sounds lame but music is a point of existence for us, It's a huge part of our lives, we share that equally.
  Hailer wants to spread our contribution to rock and roll as far and as wide as we can and get our music into more and more peoples lives...playing live is what we do better than anything in the world."

All I can remember is that they haven't been out of my "top friends" since. This is not me sucking up, but they're really that good. There is a definite combination of blues and rock that a lot of bands seem to have forgotten about. Their sound is distinctive and in a time where lets face it, my own mother wants to listen to My Chemical Romance and my techno loving grunge hating sister owns more Silverchair than I do, it's refreshing to hear music as it should be - bluesy, dirty, gritty, and beat driven with fuzzy guitars just to top it off.
  
  The band aren't afraid to let the blues influences come out in their style of playing but do so without sounding like carbon copies of other players. Many bands fear sounding like an amalgamation of their influences, but Hailer embrace it, which is where so many bands go wrong when trying to record.
  
  Each song in the EP melts into the next one, due to professional mixing and a band willing to stick with the sound they know best. When I first heard Hailer, I felt like I'd found a gem, and it shows thru the quality of the songs. The tracks will have you shuffling in your seat and the wailing vocals are once again, unique to a distinctive sound in a way that makes you want to listen again and again. The lyrics aren't always clear, but then again were Nirvana's clear and if so, could you make sense of them? The EP ends all too soon for me and that is the way music should be."

  Hailer had to be patient when completing their new album. It didn’t matter that it only took them ei...Hailer had to be patient when completing their new album. It didn’t matter that it only took them eight days to record it. Fate often seems intent on derailing artists that complete excellent work in a short period of time. In this case, the derailment was the broken arm of guitarist AND engineer Pete Beringer, who fell victim a few weeks before the final production stages. The role of an engineer is essential enough, but upon hearing Hailer’s inventive fusion of post-punk and rock it’s impossible to overlook the necessity of guitar as well.
  
  Alas, Hailer finished the album eventually — seven months later in Brooklyn, NY, and nearly 10,000 miles away from their native Australia. The release, now titled Another Way, was mixed and mastered by Nick Stumpf, known for his work with French Kicks, Coke Weed, and Caveman. Set for release sometime in February, the album features the outstanding “Spooky Clams”. It initially sounds like a low-budget recording, with a tinny drum machine and vocal dominance, but the bass and percussion really shifts it into polished motion.
  
  “Spooky Clams” breathes to life in less than 30 seconds, its thickly reverberating guitar matching colorful vocals that alternate between entranced crooning and ferocious spoken-word, the latter comparable to The Fall’s Mark E. Smith and his tendency for ravenous climaxes. The hushed verse vocals – and the excellent “caught in the motorcade” bridge” – are more reminiscent of The Auteurs’ Luke Haines, especially with the notable use of reverb. Hailer references psychedelia and classic-rock as their strongest influences, but I’m hearing more in line with dark Brit-pop and post-punk. Hey, nothing wrong with comparisons to The Fall, Suede, and The Auteurs. I’m really looking forward to Another Way.

  From the slightly sinister, metronomic swell of opener Stroke Of The Night to the closing croon of Two Feet, the record more than lives up to expectations. The band happily mix rock, pop, psychedelia and krautrock, shaping and bending the ingredients to meet their will and creating something as unusual as it is engaging.

The Sydney indie rock band kick off the tour tonight (April 26) behind second album Another Way, their follow-up to 2010 debut Good Canyon. Following the tour, the quartet is relocating abroad to Philadelphia for a spell.
  
  Preamble
  
  a. The new album was self-produced with guitarist/engineer Peter Beringer and then mixed and mastered in NYC with Nick Stumpf (French Kicks, Caveman). How exactly did Nick put his mark on it?
  Firstly Nick is a drummer and songwriter himself (French Kicks is his band) so that helps straight off the bat. He has a very identifiable sound that can be heard across a lot of his work – very full and lush with plenty of room in the mix for the beat. We finished recording the album in Pete’s studio (and vocals in our own houses) about six months before Nick started mixing it. The timespan meant it was in need of some fresh ears. The record being mixed in Brooklyn somewhat expedited the process: less band democracy and peaking over the mixing board was refreshing. Two or three mixes of each song would land in the inbox, [followed by a] couple notes in reply and we were done. It was a seamless collaboration – the best kind.
  
  b. When and how did the band form?
  The band formed many moons back in 2004 on the hallowed campus of the University of Sydney. I was studying the same degree as Scott (drums) and we both shared classes with Angus (bass/vocals). We chatted about jamming over drinks at Manning Bar and within a few weeks were in the band comp. The fact we did not get past the first round is not the point. The three of us have been at it ever since. Others have flown by Hailer but the one that stuck – Pete (guitar) – joined the band in 2010 when we started to tour our previous record, Good Canyon.
  
  c. You’re relocating to the US for a few months after this tour. Where and why?
  We’ll be spending the first few weeks in Austin in Texas and then will be basing ourselves on the East Coast in Philadelphia. We have some friends over that way, it’s real cheap to rent, has a great local scene and is only a couple hours from the Big Apple.
  
  We are heading over as musical expeditionaries! We will play as many shows as possible, meet wonderful people, flog some records and maybe even record a new one. Adventure, hurrah! A college radio campaign for the album kicks off in late April so the record will be floating around. We are lucky to have a wily manager who has sent bands over there in the past and also some friends keen to help us get out and about. Have love, will travel!

  a. Tell us about your hometown.
  Sydney. Aside from Angus, who grew up in Korea and Hong Kong, we are all born and bred Harbuor-side. In spite of the well-documented nanny state, public transport and immaculacy issues, I love the place. Heady mix of coastline and natural sweeties rubbing up against the goopy city and all its noise, bars, money and people. Viva.
  
  b. Name your favourite bands from your neck of the woods.
  Dead Radio, Julia Why (both playing at our Sydney launch on June 7 at Brighton Up Bar), Richard in Your Mind, James Thompson, Sleep Debt…
  
  
  c. Where’s your local and what’s it like? Technically it would be the Empire in Annandale … but you’re more likely to find us at the Courthouse Hotel in Newtown. Yes it’s packed on the weekend and yes those kids don’t know how to queue for a beer – but always a great vibe, cool tunes, friendly faces and a helluva courtyard.

  a. Which Australian bands did you grow up listening to?
  Teenage years it was Spiderbait, Tumbleweed, Regurgitator, Living End, Grinspoon – basically anyone who had an under 18s show, I was there with me cargos and me cons.
  
  b. What’s the first Australian record you bought?
  Regurgitator Tu Plang.
  
  c. Who’s your favourite Australian band/artist of all time?
  Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.
  
  d. What’s the most “Australian” record ever produced?
  The Saints – (I’m) Stranded.

  a. Who are some of your favourite new Australian bands?
  Tame Impala, POND, The Drones, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Black Cab, Richard In Your Mind.
  
  
  b. If you could collaborate with one current Australian artist, who would it be, and what would it sound like?
  Warren Ellis. Empty the sonic toy box onto the floor and vibe on. Get the mandocaster out, violin of course. I think it would sound romantic, dark, trippy and fierce.
  
  c. Last great local gig you saw.
  Last great one was POND at The Standard.
  
  d. Do you think an Australian artist needs to go overseas to succeed?
  That depends on how you define success – but presuming this is commercial and critical success, well yes. The most credible music produced in Australia has always found an overseas audience – it’s only natural – most people don’t care or realise where a song originated. If something’s good it’s just good. Some Australian acts have a very homegrown success story and carve out long careers just on this continent – but they tend to be the bands/groups that I don’t like so much. The geographical isolation is a massive barrier for touring obviously … but for discovering tunes and potentially loving them, I don’t think so.

Beginning the Another Way journey at guitarist Pete Beringer's studio compound in early 2012, they took the clocks off the walls and by the 8th sunrise they had a new album on tape. Mixed and mastered in Brooklyn, NYC, the new material shares the eclectic spirit of Hailer's Good Canyon, but departs from the psychedelic mellow soundscapes of their debut to more rhythmic guitar-driven music, resulting in a sonic intensity for which the group’s live performances are known.
