Biography
Danny grew up in South Central Kentucky playing everything from Bluegrass to
Country to Classical to Rock and Roll. After playing in assorted bands in
Kentucky, Danny made his way to Texas in 1980. Danny did a couple years touring
with Jerry Jeff Walker as his road manager. He began writing and playing his
own music as a part of the Austin music scene and by the early 1990s was
performing on a regular basis.
Danny has performed around the country on shows with the likes of Guy Clark,
Jerry Jeff Walker, John McCutcheon, Chris Smither, Bruce Robison, Nina Gerber, Kelly Willis, Chris
Wall, Greg Trooper, The Dixie Chicks, and many others.
In 2000 Danny and business partner Rene’ Loflin formed their own record company, Red Dawg Music. Their publishing Company is Austin Red Dawg Publishing.
Danny’s 1st original work was released in April 2001 titled: Danny Britt and Red Dawg - Texas Stuff. This work was noted in Performing Songwriter Magazine and reviewed in Sing Out Magazine in 2001. Texas Stuff was also reviewed in Roots Town Magazine in 2002. Long time Austin touring musician and producer Marvin Dykhuis produced this recording. It is a collection of some of Danny’s favorite original songs that take the listener on a tour of several different kinds of music while maintaining a unique acoustic sound.
Red Dawg Music released Danny’s second original work in Feb. 2003. This CD is titled Danny Britt - The Other Side. It is co-produced by long time touring musician Chip Dolan and Danny. Several great Austin Based Artists join Danny & Chip on this recording. Some of them include Kelly Willis, Bruce Robison, Christine Albert, Chris Gage, Marvin Dykhuis, and more. 2010 brings a new single release: Danny Britt - Stranded at the Crossroad. This is available as a digital download on all the major download sites. More singles to be released in this format in 2011.
2012 brings the release of "Two Guys Two Guitars" from Red Dawg Music. This is an acoustic Duo recording with Danny Britt & Marvin Dykhuis (www.marvindykhuis.com). The official release was on June 8th at The Kerrville Folk Festival
Main Stage Show.
On November 29, 2001 the Austin City Council and Austin Mayor Gus Garcia proclaimed that day Danny Britt Day for his continued efforts to maintain Austin, Texas as the Live Music Capital of the World.

Danny Britt's newest release The Other Side (Aus-
tin Red Dawg Publishing) is filled with the wonder-
ful sounds of that laid back, down-home, progressive-
folk style that have made him and his band
Red Dawg performing favorites in Austin for years.
Britt and Red Dawg have performed around the
country with Guy Clark, Jerry Jeff Walker, John
McCutcheon, Chris Smither, Iris Dement, Bruce
Robison, Greg Brown, Nina Gerber, Chris Wall,
and The Dixie Chicks.
The Other Side contains original material written
and produced by Britt, and longtime musical colla-
borators and friends Robert Penn Harris, William
Chip Dolan, and Craig Calvert.
How Long is Forever features Chip Dolan on piano,
Marvin Dykhuis on electric guitar, Christine Albert
doing backup vocals and Dave Heath on bass guitar,
pounding out a honky tonk melody, as Britt - on
acoustic guitar and lead vocals - wonders if he was
mistaken in thinking that forever would last a lot
longer than six months?
The Other Side is the title track on the CD, show-
casing Britt's vocals and acoustic guitar, harmony
vocals by Kelly Willis, Bruce Robison, and Craig Cal-
vert. The Red Dawg Band backs Britt with a winning
country/western melody that's easy to listen to and
great to dance to. My Baby's Crazy has a funky beat
and entertaining lyrics that declare, "My baby's cra-
zy, she's lost her mind, but looking good all of the
time, I know at times her lights ain't bright, but I
know where she is tonight."
The most beautiful song on the album in Carry
Me Home, written by Dolan (who also co-produc-
ed the album). This song also features great work
on the flute by Beth Galiger and elegant harmonies
by New Texas Magazine writer and one of our fave
singer/songwriters, Amilia Spicer.
The Devil's Got Him Down is filled with haunting
electric guitar by Dykhuis, and a heart-beat percus-
sion line down by Herb Belofsky, Britt sings the
woes of succumbing to the Devil in the bottle. Dan-
ny's tender vocals, Dolan's perfect piano and Eamon
McLoughlin's soul-stirring violin lament the passing
of life in Every Time an Angel Flies.
The Other Side showcases Danny Britt's versatili-
ty and talent, and boasts some of Austin's best mus-
icians and performers. - LT

Danny Britt and his friend since boyhood, Penn Harris, write great songs. The melodies keep my interest and the lyrics flow in a seemingly effortless stream. It has been a long time since I've run across a project where the words and the music fit together so well. Each note, each chord, every syllable, every line meshes into a unified whole. I'm afraid I will be less tolerant of the efforts of others who simply unable to achieve this full integration. Every time I listen to his work, I become more and more spoiled.
"Texas Stuff" begins with a delightful western-folk tune entitled 'Rio Grande.' We, the listener, quickly realize we are about to begin a wonderful journey.
This is immediately followed by light, jazzy number. It is in the best Steely Dan "Aja" style with those tight vocal harmonies and swingin' rhythms, though with strictly acoustic instrumentation and accordion, instead of a full rock production.
'Alice' is a lovely folk-ballad in shuffle-time. One of three tracks where Penn Harris (a.k.a., Robert P. Harris) assumes lead vocal duties. Penn has a husky tenor that is so easy on the ears. He plays acoustic guitar here, but treats the mandolin extremely well on all the other tracks.
Next we are invited to enjoy Latin American rhythm in 'Free Tonight' where Eamon McLaughlin makes his fiddle sound just like a violin. I find my musical vocabulary quickly abandoning me in trying to describe these songs. I mean just how much sense of the actual music can be conveyed by "Plaintive, yet upbeat, with unconventional and engaging melodic structure"?
'That's The Way It Is Out West' is a song about a cowboy in the old-west, sleeping out on the range with his six-gun at his side. Marty Muse supplies the pedal steel. Ironically, this ballad is almost a samba, and the night I heard it performed, it was full-on jazz.
As we work our way across Texas, on this CD, Chip Dolan provides Laredo-style accordion for 'Margarita.'
In order to keep with the "Texas Stuff" theme, we need to assume the song "Strike" came to Texas to be told. It is written in the best traditional folk-narrative style by Penn and Danny who were actually living and working in that town in eastern Kentucky during the events.
Lest we get weighted down by coal town tragedies, Danny and the Dawgs treat us to another light, acoustic number about the healing power of music.
Don't let me forget to mention the contribution of the multi-talented Marvin Dykhuis who sings and plays mandolin, nylon string guitar, banjo, acoustic guitar and acoustic slide guitar on various tracks. Dave Heath and David Carroll shared bass duties, electrically and acoustically, respectively. And Phil Bass shook, rattled and rolled on percussion. I believe the other contributors were mentioned previously in this review.

Danny Britt is a singer / songwriter / guitarist who is way too slick and multi - faceted
to be roped into any one pen. He's a little bit Texas troubadour
(in fact "Troubadour" is the final cut on The Other Side) and a little bit poprocker
and a big bit talent. He reminds me of someone I know, but I'll be durned if I can bring it
to mind. (That's been happening a lot lately.) His picking is consistently clean and spare,
but he also knows when to add layers of background. On the Texas Stuff album there is a
lot of stuff: mandolin, piano, fiddle, pedal steel, that sort of thing. I think I prefer
it to the later and more individual The Other Side, but that album has its up-tempo,
multi-instrument cuts too. These albums were recorded in Austin, Texas and the Website is: www.reddawgmusic.com, as if you couldn't figure that out on your own.

The excellent songwriting we found on Danny Britt's "Texas Stuff" project continues on his latest effort. This time Danny lets some of the tracks go electric and adds a full drum kit. Nevertheless, the sound is still light and agile, the harmonies rich, and the writing still honest. There is additional diversity since there are songs from additional writers, but it is all of the highest caliber.
This project is more introspective. Where "Texas Stuff" managed to keep upbeat in the face of adversity, "The Other Side" acknowledges that we are changed by loss and it is ok to feel that loss as we face the night. The most beautiful of these sad songs were written by or with Chip Dolan, such as 'Every Time An Angel Flies" dedicated to the memory of Jackie Bloomer of Boulder, CO and Champ Hood of Austin.
There is a strong western flavor to this recording even as it enters the realm of more production and instrumentation. This project rocks and pops, but never with a harsh edge. There is a funky tune, a couple of acoustic bluegrass numbers, and pop ballads. These are not pedestrian or commercialized compositions, however. Each is marked by the craftsmanship of the writers and players in delightful and sometimes, unexpected ways.
'How Long Is Forever' is reprised from "Texas Stuff." Here it has gone electric with a driving, insistent beat. It still asks the question "Well excuse me/How long is forever/I thought it was until the end of time/But 6 months down the road/You say your leavin'" I guess I'm not the only one who discovered this the hard way.
The CD concludes with 'Troubadour' which was inspired by Danny's time on the road with Jerry Jeff Walker and is dedicated to all those who travel and play for the sake of the music.
