Biography

SPF-4 (The Sun Protection Factor Four) is a contemporary 4-piece surf-rock instrumental band. Continuing the tradition pioneered by instro-masters like The Ventures, The Challengers, Link Wray and other early 60's instro surfbands, SPF-4 shares the passion and vibe of the surf-instro genre, now in its current wave. With reference to the past and an eye on the future, SPF-4 is crafting a current wave of surf-rock-instro.

Formed in 2004, The Sun Protection Factor Four includes seasoned players that deliver the traditional surf-instro sound combined with a modern edge, dynamic performance.

A unique vibe created by an SPF-4 performance is one of the band's many strengths. As the band delivers a brand of faithfully toned surf-instro, a cool scene emerges at each performance. SPF-4 taps into and delivers the vibe and purity of the music, which is easily appreciated by a wide audience.

SPF-4 is available to perform club dates, corporate functions, concert openers, charitable events, music festivals and college events.

SPF-4 is actively seeking soundtrack and licensing opportunities for original compositions in the instrumental genre.

  Those not in the know consider surf rock to be one-dimensional, with a repetitive driving beat, rumb...Those not in the know consider surf rock to be one-dimensional, with a repetitive driving beat, rumbling bass and tremolo-filled guitar clichés. On the all-instrumental Surf Session 1, SPF-4 smashes all of those clichés, beginning with the fluid opener “Collision Course,” which finds the band adding shots of samba and flamenco to their mellow surf for a tasty island mix. From there, the band mixes in highway-worthy cruise tunes such as “The Rising Surf,” “Ninth Wave” and “Crystal T.” Relax on a beach chair as the smooth, rolling surf of “Loophole” breaks over you. Visualize spaghetti westerns while the Tex-Mex-meets-Byrds groove of “Lantania” flows. There’s more than one way to surf.
