Biography

The members of Lady Elaine were introduced by means of their college Audio Production program back in 2004. Each hailing from very different musical backgrounds, it is Lucas' and Daugherty's backgrounds combined that result in their strength as a songwriting duo.

"Lucas was born in Seattle with a litany of physical ailments including a heart valve that wouldn’t close and a double-wide kidney that never pulled off its genetically programmed split. The most relevant challenge facing the future vocalist was the scar tissue that formed on his vocal cords as a result of the surgery that connected his esophagus to his stomach.

His resulting deep baritone, a source of embarrassment as a child, later became an asset to his musical career. With the tunes and talent to support it, his voice became an asset despite its incorrectly perceived failings." And because he shared a sound more commonly associated with African American singers, Lucas cites his dad's unconventional music catalog as his earliest influence: Leon Redbone, Louis Armstrong, and Nat King Cole were just a few of the old crooners he'd imitate growing up. Later in college, Lucas explored the vocal styles of Jazz and Soul music, which gave him the training for the beautiful sound that's so inherent in the bands music.

Adam Daugherty, the other half of the songwriting duo, comes more from a grunge and alternative rock background, being a teen back in the mid 90s. Having first picked up a bass guitar, Adam's riffs feature heavily distinguished bass and treble conversations. Among his favorite musicians and mentors are Smashing Pumpkins, Rage Against the Machine, Nirvana, and John Lennon.

The songs and arrangements that the two compose together are honest and completely unpretentious glimpses into real life; very much in congruence with their namesake puppet, Lady Elaine Fairchilde, of Mr. Roger's Neighborhood. She built her reputation as an oddly likeable personality who was at once the voice of reason, and also the sort of highly individualistic subject who would question the king’s (or anyone else’s) authority when she deemed it appropriate. Juxtapose this with Lady Elaine of Arthurian lore - the Lilly Maiden that dies of a broken heart - and you encounter the dark side of love that is underscored in Lady Elaine's music.
