Biography

Hailing from New York City, Jessy Tomsko has a love for music that transcends the simple pop tunes that plague much of today’s music scene. With her heartfelt lyrics and self-penned melodies, Jessy celebrates life and love in her acoustic renditions brought to life on the many stages of New York City.

Jessy’s love for music stretches back to early childhood where she became enamoured with writing short poems and stories, and shortly began to add music to the equation by composing little piano pieces. These early ventures into music cumulated in picking up the guitar in her late teens, and deciding then and there that she wanted to focus on music and pursue a career of her own. After some time spent earning a degree in classical singing, Jessy returned to writing music, reigning in her creative capabilities and challenging herself as a singer-song writer.

In 2010, Jessy worked closely with Greg Fisher on her debut album “The Light You Make”. The album invites the listener to take part in Jessy’s honest and unguarded musical interpretation of life’s virtues and melancholies. The soft, lilting melodies featured on the record showcases her vocal skills, finessed with years of classical training.

Jessy’s work is infused with a lightness and warmth that is equally embodied in her live performances. Maintaining a busy performance schedule, Jessy has played at venues such as The Bitter End in New York City and the World Café Live in Philadelphia, and major events as the Wave Gathering Music Festival in Asbury Park, New Jersey and the Launch Music Conference in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She’s also had the honour of sharing the stage with artists such as David Berkeley, James Maddock, John Francis, Amber Rubarth and Ari Hest among many others.

“Little Reverie”, a three track EP, was released in January 2011. Jessy continued to evoke emotionally charged responses from her listeners with acoustic tracks delivered with sweet and simple vocals. Her stripped down and honest delivery magnified the intimacy she strives to achieve with her audience.

Known for her well-crafted songs and dynamic stage personality, Jessy’s easy-going personality and warm vocals permeate her music and continues to do so with her latest singles, “Come Get Me” and "There Was".

Jessy is currently touring and in the studio.

That's the pervasive theme of Jessy Tomsko's debut album The Light You Make. The disc's ten appealing songs let us in on her philosophy and her gift for effortless warmth. From the cover art to her breezy, mellifluous singing voice, the presentation is welcoming and unguarded.
  
  Her style is so easy and her voice so sweet you might not notice how skilled she is. She really finesses these soft, lilting melodies, carefully treating every inflection. Meanwhile the words flow like a friendly conversation, as though singing is simply the way she speaks. Her voice evokes Sarah McLachlan, but also Ani DiFranco without the confrontational edginess. Her band reminds me of the Goo Goo Dolls. Plenty of ringing acoustic guitars and muffled drums support her laid-back voice. The occasional electric guitar and organ with vibrato add extra flavor.
  
  Most of the tracks are unhurried or even sedate, but “Good Company” is a bittersweet song with an up-tempo country beat. It's about temporary relationships, illustrated by a robin nesting near her home and a summer fling, both of whom casually fly away. The song ends on a hopeful note after a little self-examination and insight reveals the positive flip side: being left is also being given freedom. “Willing” is the other bouncy track, an up-tempo and up-beat tune about making the most of life and cultivating what's truly important. Overall, the album has a nice balance of humor, positivity, and melancholy.
  
  Tomsko doesn't push any boundaries but she makes a good, honest statement with her first full-length record. Her tunes are heartfelt and likable and she's an exceptional singer. It's too feathery and a little bland for my taste, but there's no question its good-caliber craft.

Songs remain generally sensual and seldom stray far from the usual topics of unexpected love and otherworldly contentment. Tomsko is no poet, don't expect Ani DiFranco here. But the album is refreshing in its simplicity. Cutesy lyrics and Tomsko's soothing voice- you can sometimes hear the odd details of pursed lips in her voice- make for a surprisingly mellow listen. Jessy Tomsko is like Alanis Morissette on a "chill pill;" calm, but entirely confident. Word of warning: you might not wanna play this in a crowded place if you're a burly guy.

  Jessy's intricate lyrics are well enunciated with a crisp, clear, melodic vocal diction that sets her apart from many others in her genre. She has been playing the guitar since 17 and writing music for the last two years. She is 24. With her musical partner, Greg, she already shines on the stage like a well polished jewel. Jessy and Greg have an easy and sweet chemistry between them that accentuates Jessy's style. Some of her lyrics are sad, but she is rarely sad. "I have always been a happy person." she says. ”I went through a short phase when I was 18 that I would call my punk rock phase when I had pink or purple hair and a bit of teen angst, but nothing serious."
  
  Jessy was born in the Pittsburgh, PA area and lives now in Lansdale, PA near Philadelphia. Jessy comes from a musical family and has been singing all her life. Jessy's mother and father were both in the Pittsburgh based rock group Leggs Diamond in the 80s and Jessy remembers that she was always singing along with her parents and her family. Jessy and her sister would make up musicals and plays and perform them to their enthusiastic family audiences. "We sang harmony with my parents all the time. I never knew it could be any different. It was just natural for me to sing"
  
  In high school, she tried sports and art, but she kept coming back to her music. In middle school and high school she was in a lot of music theater, choral groups, jazz groups, and eventually went on to Rider University to become a Classical Voice major. Her favorite performers are Joni Mitchell, the Indigo Girls, Carole King and Ani Difranco. At some time during her classical training, she realized that classical music was incredibly beautiful and she loved it, but she wanted to sing more in the styles of these female folk music stars that she loved.
  
  With her classically trained voice and her guitar, Jessy stepped onto the independent music stage in the fall of 2007. Jessy has a knack for poetry and songwriting which carries her music up to the next level. She released her first self-titled EP in 2008. This EP is described as having "dazzling melodies and catchy lyrics accompanied by her graceful acoustic guitar playing (which) continue to strike the fancy of listener’s everyday." She released her second EP later in 2008, entitled "Offer." "Offer" is described as "an intimate acoustic release featuring Jessy, her guitar, and some microphones."   Jessy Tomsko performed recently at Wisteria's Cornstalk Festival. She had two performances there, one at 6 PM on Friday at Caffeina's and one on Saturday at 5 PM on the Main Stage. Both were both extraordinary. She has such crisp, clear vocals. There is no wondering what the lyrics to the song might be. Jessy's vocal diction reflects her years of classical training. She is also an incredibly beautiful young lady. Both her mother and grandmother were at the show and you could see that they were her biggest supporters and fans. Jessy is definitely blessed to have such strong family support.
  
  Jessy's positive attitude about life is one of her greatest strengths. She says that she has had her share of ups and downs, but she prefers to remember them in her music and not relive them again and again. ”Life is about the light you make," she says. "Act out of love and not fear. Fan the flames of love and act out of kindness; be non-judgmental of others." She says this is what she tries to do with her life. She continues,"The Universe will start by tapping lightly on your door. If you ignore it, the tapping will get louder until it knocks your door down. Listen to your inner voice and the voice of the Universe and it will show you what you need to do."
