Biography

“Signal of these times, Marcelo Fruet is a ‘hard-to-catalog’ artist. I like to see him as a rocker that makes Brazilian Music (or what, one day, was stipulated to call MPB)… he exhales a lot of the rigorous poetry of Vitor Ramil, surpasses Caetano Veloso at his inspired times, and get into to the MPB pre-bar-soundtrack, that has Lenine as its last bastion.” Says Marcelo Ferla – Culture Journalist (Folha /Ilustrada, Rolling Stone, etc), artistic and editorial coordinator of the extinct Rádio Oi FM.

" The crazy idea of being a solo-artist-with-a-fixed-band has arrived from some artist’s older experiences: “the collective feeling has proved to be very important for the process of musical research and arrangement, and this cannot be ignored..”, says Fruet. The proposal was turning the songs inside out, while still being reasonably pop: the result had to be digestible, like a good dish of exotic food. Therefore, the name of the band “Cozinheiros” which , in Portuguese, means “Cooks”.

Marcelo Fruet & Os Cozinheiros ’s second album “AIÓN” ( dist.Tratore, label Fruet Music) debuted 22nd November 2012 in the city of Porto Alegre (RS – Brazil) and is now going to be released over the country. The album had an instantaneous repercussion in the media vehicles of the RS, collecting many compliments from well-known public persons and music critics, such as Juarez Fonseca, Júlio Fürst, Roger Lerina, Ruy Carlos Ostterman and Célia Ribeiro. The band barely released it, but it was enough for “AIÓN” to take part in the Best Of The Year 2012’s list, according to Zero Hora (the bigger newspaper publication in south Brazil), side by side with big names such as Caetano Veloso, Bob Dylan, Tulipa Ruiz and Leonard Cohen. The Brazilian "AIÓN" tour will go to other capitals as São Paulo (SP), Rio de Janeiro (RJ) , Belo Horizonte (MG) and Curitiba (PR) in 2013.

The musical group has also been highlighted at media vehicles for its first independent artistic musical concert and album called "O Som do Fim ou Tanto Faz" (Independent, 2007).


2013, Marcelo Fruet & Os Cozinheiros started touring in the US when invited to the SXSW 2013. There were 14 shows driving more than 3.400Km between Austin-TX and New York City, including Atlanta-GA, and Richmond-VA, as well as workshops on Brazilian Music and Culture in The College of William & Mary, one of the most outstanding universities of the USA. The trip was co-sponsored by the Ministry of Culture of Brazil.

In 2012, the band toured in Japan, including a presentations at the Kansai Music Conference and more 8 shows in Tokyo, Sapporo and Osaka, sponsored by an independent association of fans (crowdfunding projetc) and the Porto Alegre City Department of Culture.

They also showcased at the SXSW 2008, played at Emory University and Eyedrum Art Music Gallery (Atlanta -GA -USA), taking part in events about Brazilian music culture. This opportunity has trigged their first U.S. tour, which included Carrollton (MS), Memphis (TN) and Los Angeles (CA) in its schedule too. Not to mention, Brazilian events as the “Brasil Rural Contemporâneo”, when the band played among artists such as Otto, Gilberto Gil and Monobloco.

Fruet – that already has two songs in the Big Brother Brasil 7, four Prêmio Açorianos de Música Awards (best composer, band of the year, best artwork, the RBS Culture Special Mention) and a Best Original Music Award at the Gramado Cinema Festival – was the only artist from Rio Grande do Sul State selected to participate in the “Festival Musica Pra Todo Mundo”, among more than 800 bands from all over Brazil, promoted by Oi Música. He was also one of a few artists from this time invited to play at the MPG (Gaucha Popular Music) movement 30 years commemoration show, side by side with great historical ancient south Brazil 80's generation composers such as Bebeto Alves and Nelson Coelho de Castro.

On their latest album *AIÓN*:

The term "AIÓN", derived from ancient Greek, is used to refer to a time different from the chronological one, which can’t be measured by its quantity, but by quality. On the other hand, the graphic design of the album, created by the artist Indio San, is inspired by physics: mixing graphic lines with the “eye of the beholder.”** These are two main axes, which put Marcelo Fruet’s musical work in motion: time and illusion. It wasn’t by accident that the album was first released in Japan, where time begins earlier, on Brazil’s tomorrow. Defying logic, “AIÓN” was born in the future and upside down.

The album has 14 + 1 tracks: 13 original, a version for Jards Macalé's song "Mal Secreto" and one bonus track. Most of the songs are written in Portuguese, but there's a few in English. One of them, "Song For Tom", mixes both languages and appears to be a faithful representative of the artist's work. Each track has a slightly different flavor and you can find instruments as tympanis, cavaquinho, sitar and trombone, in some. And there’s also the Atlanta’s composer Andy Ditzler playing the piano in two tracks.
By the way, the word “Cozinheiros” means “cooks” in Portuguese, their native language.
** The “eye of the beholder” is the figure of an eye used in physics optical schemes to represent the position of the subject related to the object and the image or mirror.

And never doubt the rocking-out ability of a country that produced metal-maniacs Sepultura. Nobody on this lineup is shredding quite that hard, but São Paulo power trio Debate pounds out rock full of slashing guitars, heavy drums, and screaming vocals. Telerama, a Fortaleza fourpiece, describes itself as "roots nerd rock or the world's next pop delight." Perhaps it's not an either/or question as these indie rockeros serve up pop ballads with a lovely female vocal. Same goes for Nancy, a lady-led fivepiece from Brasília that's catching considerable stateside blog buzz. Fruet & os Cozinheiros is a fivepiece whose moody art-rock shifts joyful to brooding without warning, while Buenos Aires native Valerio Rinaldi serves up earnest, adult contemporary pop-rock en español.   Brazilian rocker Marcelo Fruet called his band “Os Cozinheiros” — “the Cooks” — to indicate their skillful use of many ingredients, and the name is certainly apt. While their configuration at Club 115 at 8 p.m. Saturday was not unusual — a standard twin-guitar rock quartet plus a percussionist — they gave Fruet’s songs a Brazilian tinge that went beyond the warmth of his Portuguese vocals and incorporated international elements including punk, jazz and ska.
  
  Fruet sometimes scatted George Benson-style while playing jazz licks on his guitar, an unusual model that gave new meaning to the term “hollow body.” (It had a fretboard and the empty frame of the body, making it see-through.)
  
  On “Todo Tempo,” second guitarist Nicola Spolidoro scratched out dramatic scraping sounds from his strings that amplified the tension that kept building up in the song through touches of dissonance. Bassist Leonardo Brawl upped the ante considerably with his fierce playing, and was tremendous throughout the set, displaying the technique of a jazz player with the energy of a punk-rocker, often striking a wide-legged stance and seeming to flail at his bass while executing with utmost precision.
  
  This band obviously had a lot more tricks up its sleeve than it could possibly deploy in a short showcase. And Brawl is such a versatile and compelling bassist, I’d go see him in any band without even bothering to ask its genre.

  A banda liderada por Marcelo Fruet recebeu os prêmios de melhor compositor, projeto gráfico para CD (O Som do Fim ou Tanto Faz) e revelação do ano.   In advance of their March 7 concert showcase at Eyedrum, Marcelo Fruet, his band Os Cozinheiros and guest percussionist João Marcelo Selhane present a workshop in Brazilian music and percussion, taking place Tuesday, March 4 at 7:00 PM.
  
  Percussion is a crucial aspect of Brazilian music, and this workshop is designed to introduce both musicians and non-musicians to the various rhythms and instruments of Brazilian music. Fruet and his band will also perform some of their own music demonstrating these elements.
  
  Initially a singer, guitarist and ukelele player, João Marcelo Selhane migrated to percussion, and quickly gained renown in the samba realms of the Rio Grande do Sul state. He studied with percussion experts Fernando do Ó and Marcos Suzano, and has played in dozens of groups, as well as recording for such CD projects as Caranaval de Porto Alegre and Só se For Samba.
  
  Marcelo Fruet is a composer and musician from the south of Brazil. Over his ten-year career, he has produced and performed on many recordings as well as composing soundtracks and songs for short films. His first solo CD, “O Som do Fim ou Tanto Faz,” was featured as the soundtrack to the Brazilian TV show Big Brother Brazil 7, and is one of the few independent releases to gain national exposure on Brazilian TV.

  Fruet e os Cozinheiros was formed in 2005 by the Brazilian composer, songwriter, vocalist and producer Marcelo Fruet. They come from Porto Alegre in the temperate south of Brazil, near Argentina and Uruguay. In Fruet’s music, rock mixes with elements of tango and milonga. The lyrics and music are reminiscent of samba and classic MPB, but with a flavor distinct from that of Rio and tropical Brazil.
  
  Even by Brazilian standards, os Cozinheiros are well-traveled musically: they’ve all played in groups ranging from hardcore, punk, and indie rock to samba, MPB, traditional Brazilian styles, jazz, reggae, electronica, even a Black Sabbath tribute band. For their U.S. shows, special guest percussionist João Marcelo Selhane brings a more typically Brazilian element to the music. Different regional rhythms and musical structures from many cultures provide alternative strategies for national and regional identity in the globalized world.
  
  The band plays their first U.S. show here in Atlanta, before heading to Austin for their showcase at the 2008 South By Southwest festival. Joining them on the Eyedrum stage is Atlanta musician Andy Ditzler, whose own songs have been highly influenced by Brazilian music.

Agora Fruet junta-se aos Cozinheiros Leonardo "Brawl" Marquez (baixo), André Lucciano (bateria) e Nícolas Spolidoro (guitarra) para uma nova partida.
  
  Com um trabalho gráfico primoroso, que lembra a arte de Dave McKean nas capas do clássico Sandman de Neil Gaiman, Everson Lazari envolve o CD numa embalagem que, quando montada, se transforma num cubo. Um dado com uma imagem e o título de uma música em cada face.
  
  O disco mistura elementos eletrônicos com violões, experimentalismo e poesia na primeira pessoa. Uma obra cuidadosa, lapidada, onde percebe-se claramente a mão do Fruet produtor. O tempero dos Cozinheiros engrossa o caldo, servindo-nos diferentes pratos. Um banquete para ser digerido com calma, mas sem regras de etiqueta.
  
  Montamos o nosso cubo e vamos ao jogo:
  
  Que se faz? Uma balada pop, romântica sem ser piegas. A batida do violão introduz um riff de guitarra, que se repete no decorrer da música. Refrão magnético. A dinâmica cresce e, quando nos damos conta, já estamos cantando.
  
  Outra balada é a música que fecha o CD, O som do fim ou tanto faz. Música calma, para escutar de olhos fechados, cheia de detalhes e surpresas, como a oração indígena que se ouve no início. "Temo já ter perdido a fé", diz a letra, mas nós não perdemos nada; jogamos o dado outra vez.
  
  Vamos para Todo o tempo. A poesia fala de insegurança, não de uma insegurança juvenil que se transforma com o passar do tempo, mas sim de um medo constante de não se permitir. O título da canção é lembrado na melodia, que se repete, transformando-se a todo instante. O inesperado vai nos cercando numa atmosfera cheia de efeitos. É a música mais experimental do CD. Mas não pense em algo tipo Bjork ou Tom Zé; ouça Fruet e os Cozinheiros esbanjarem originalidade.
  
  Gira o cubo do destino e encontramos Me despluguei. Melodia calma e fluída, na qual se sobressai a voz de Fruet com versos do calibre de "Honestamente, mente, não sente, fixe-se em pé / Repare sua rotina, não aceite tudo que é". Pare, escute e pense.
  
  Próxima jogada, um tempero diferente. Samba da conexão, com direito a cuíca, tocada por Sassá, e auxílio luxuoso da flauta de Mateus Mapa. Ao contrário do que diz o release da banda no site da TRAMA VIRTUAL , que informa que a música de Fruet não é feita para dançar, pode afastar o sofá, porque só se não for brasileiro nessa hora.
  
  Última jogada, El mariacchi. Outra vez o violão inicia a música, que logo se transforma numa belíssima levada pop. Destaque para a excelente linha de baixo de “Brawl”. Aumente o volume, calibre os graves e caia cantando.
  
  Em todo o cardápio de Fruet o constante é a qualidade, seja quando flerta com o pop, seja quando se arrisca em experimentos. Jamais exagera. A sabedoria acumulada pelo produtor dá a esta concisa obra uma vastidão de sentimentos e possibilidades.
