THE SHORT STORY

Orleans is best known as the 70s Pop/Rock band that brought you the classic hits Still The One, Dance With Me and Love Takes Time. Now in it's 40th year and counting, Orleans has produced a body of work spanning 16 albums and several DVDs. The band continues to be in great demand internationally for live performances, as they have been for nearly four decades.

THE LONGER STORY

Orleans began as a trio in 1972 in Woodstock NY. John Hall, drummer Wells Kelly and multi-instrumentalist Larry Hoppen played tirelessly all over the Northeast and up / down the Eastern “corridor” for nine months, then added Lance Hoppen (Larry’s brother) fresh out of high school on bass to form the quartet that would record its debut LP in 1973 at the legendary Muscle Shoals Studio in Alabama.

During the rest of the 1970s Orleans released several more albums, which included the megahits “Dance With Me”, “Still The One” and “Love Takes Time” among other radio staples. Showcasing vocal and instrumental strengths while touring with artists such as Jackson Browne, Little Feat, Bonnie Raitt, Marshall Tucker Band, Chicago and numerous others, they expanded their fan base by going well beyond the radio songs.

One of the many signatures of Orleans was and still is harmony guitar riffs and two serious players trading rhythm and lead between them, all seamlessly. Larry and John were, for most of this still–active band’s 40-year-and–counting career, those players.

When John Hall left for a solo stint in 1977, Orleans found Dennis “Fly’ Amero; a lefty, upside-down Strat player (in the manner of Jimi Hendrix) who took over for several years.

After original drummer Wells Kelly passed away in October 1984, Larry, Lance and John played at his Memorial event. Out of this, they decided to work together as Orleans again, starting with a Nashville album. From 1985 through 2006 (when John was elected to the US Congress – D, NY-19) the group always included the three original members. Over those years, another 8 albums were released, always containing new material.

In 2000 the band added Lane Hoppen, the third brother, as a permanent member. Shortly after, Charlie Morgan – drummer with Elton John for 13 years – also joined the group.

Early in 2006, as John Hall began his election campaign, Fly Amero was asked back by the band – including John - roughly 25 years after Fly’s first ‘term’. Fly agreed, and a smooth transition ensued. (Orleans’ 2006 “We’re Still Havin’ Fun” DVD features BOTH John and Fly.)

Fly and Larry’s guitar chemistry is obvious, as is the whole group’s camaraderie. Besides being a great guitarist, songwriter and singer with a strong blues/R&B soulful tilt, Fly is great with a crowd and has a Gold Record for comedy music featuring his parody lyrics.

Here in 2012, Fly is a permanent Orleans member, as are Charlie, Lane and original mainstays Lance and Larry (who is the voice on all the radio hits, by the way). Original co-founder, John Hall, is also available to be added to the quintet.

Forty years in, Orleans’ trademarked slogan couldn’t be more appropriate: “We’re Still Havin’ Fun”. It’s also the title of their debut DVD (and CD related to the DVD). Still recording and performing around the globe, Orleans has released (Dec '08) a collection of previously unheard studio tracks recorded between 1978 and 2008 entitled "Obscurities". Also, Living Legends Music has released (Dec. '09) the "Official History and Music of Orleans" DVD and Fuel Records has released (Jan '10) "75 Live: Harvard Square Theatre". The band continues to write and record new material.

  I got a call from an old friend who needed a favor a few weeks back.
  
  Seems she was involved in a local Rotary Club and they were preparing for their 4th Annual free concert in the Regional Park in two weeks. The 2008 gig was going to be their biggest ever with a crowd of 5,000 to 8,000 expected.
  
  Free show meant "volunteerism" -- something inside my wheelhouse for a worthy cause and this was a rock 'n' roll show. That met my criteria. So, I contacted the show promoter.
  
  You Could Call It a Supergroup
  
  The gig sounded interesting -- a whole bunch of classic rockers Rick Derringer (McCoys, Johnny Winter), Felix Cavaliere (Young Rascals), Alex Ligertwood (Santana), Ronnie Hammond (Atlanta Rhythm Section) and jimi Jamison backed by the 2008 edition of Orleans. It sounded like an old fashioned Alan Freed show in Cleveland, or one of the legendary Apollo or Paramount gatherings of yesteryear.
  
  I was "in" even if that meant running the volunteer stage crew who augmented a rather slim professional stage crew. Manual labor was on the agenda and it had been over 20 years since I lifted an amp, set up a drum kit and percussion. "This should be interesting," I thought as I walked on the stage at 7:30 AM on the day of the show.
  
  I had some reservations about the show in general. After all, it was a bunch of players who, in their day, had what it took. But, I've had the misfortune of shelling out top dollar in the past year to see headliners who fell way short of their best career efforts.
  
  And, to top off my foreboding, this was a free gig, in a regional park in South Florida's very own version of Stepford. I was prepared to be underwhelmed. But, what the hell? It was a concert and a bunch of these guys (Felix and Rick, Orleans) had been early heroes and influences. And the rest of the bill was once formidable, too. It was a roll of the dice.
  
  The Table Was HOT!
  
  The show exceeded all possible expectations, and if I had forked over the going rate for a concert ticket in 2008, I still would have been satisfied.
  
  Orleans rocked steady. Three Hoppen Brothers -- Larry, Lance and Lane -- anchored the show with sidemen including drummer Charlie Morgan (ex-Elton John Band), guitarist/vocalist Jerry Riggs (ex-Pat Travers Band) and bassist/vocalist Barry Dunaway (ex-Yngwie Malmsteen).
  
  Standouts had to include EVERYONE. There truly wasn't a runt in the litter. Song after song sounded as if the original band was backing the original lead singer.
  
  Best of all, these guys were having a ball. It was reminiscent of the Senior PGA Tour in some respects -- guys who had paid their dues, been there/done that, lived life in the fast lane, and were now just jazzed to be playing their music and…sounding as good, if not better, than ever.
  
  It was one of those three generational audiences, complete with grandparents, kids turned parents and younger kids/grandkids. The hardest part was trying to figure out who was having a better time, the crowd, the band or me! This realization rang true at 1:20 in the morning as I helped to load the last piece of sound gear on the last truck, and rubbed my very sore back.
  
  Run, Don't Walk
  
  So, if you see RPM/Rock & Pop Masters coming to a venue near you anytime soon, RUN, don't walk to the box office. And, don't be surprised if the core lineup of lead singers varies from the show in Florida. They have a deep bullpen of closers, and you never can be sure just who might be grabbing a microphone, an axe or a pair of drum sticks.
  
  If you like classic rock, this is a must see. I was so blown away by Orleans that I'm headed up to Long Island to see them in April. Just don’t tell my kids. It's a surprise!

Setlist

Depending on the needs of the gig, Orleans usually does a 75-90 minute set plus encores.

This always includes the hits (Still the One, Dance With Me, Love Takes Time, Dancin' in the Moonlight) and the perennial crowd-pleasers (Reach, Let There Be Music, Juliet, etc). We also keep adding fresh music as we go, ever-evolving the show.

With 40 years under our belt, there is never a shortage of material to play!

We also often do "Orleans & Friends" shows where we add in some really great Classic Rock singers and their hits --- like Don Barnes (38 Special), Mark Farner (Grand Funk Railroad), Dave Jenkins (Pablo Cruise), David Pack (Ambrosia), Felix Cavaliere (The Rascals), Peter Rivera (Rare Earth), Robbie Durpee (Steal Away), Rick Derringer, Edgar Winter, Jimi Jamison ... and the list goes on and on!

In that case, it's a Non-Stop Hits-fest from the first downbeat to the last encore!
