  (January 2008) Nathan newest project, titled The Feeling I Got, is a great pop rock and vibe driven ...(January 2008) Nathan newest project, titled The Feeling I Got, is a great pop rock and vibe driven record that delivers an original style and feel to the listener. Nathan successfully blends a wonderful R&B style with a voice that is delightful and compelling. The musicianship of the CD is fabulous. Some of the guitar work includes another Texas singer-songwriter standout named Josh Daniels. There are several standout tracks on the record. “Rise Above,” “Songs That Make Me Think About You,” “Rain,” “The Feeling I Got,” and “The Daily Observer” are the most notable of the collection of 13 songs. In reality, there is not a bad cut on the CD.
  
  The Feeling I Got has a specific groove that is unlike anything else. All the songs were written by Johnson himself and it is clear he has influences but the influences do not specifically come through in the recordings or songs. The arrangements and melodies are very “jazzy” with a touch of rock. However, the real uniqueness of the record is the blend of great lyrics in musical arrangements that border on complex without being overdone or too complicated. Listening to the record is a joy given the great lyrics, arrangements, and Johnson’s voice. His voice is extremely smooth without being cheesy.
  
  The Feeling I Got is a rare gem of a record that would be a great addition to anyone’s musical collection.

  It's a Tuesday night at Old Town Saloon, and Nathan Johnson is busy wooing the crowd with his blue j...It's a Tuesday night at Old Town Saloon, and Nathan Johnson is busy wooing the crowd with his blue jeans-and-T-shirt sensibilities.
  
  He has just launched himself into one of the more obscure Elton John songs (Note to self: Want to impress an entertainment writer? Sing her favorite obscure Elton John song after she has just told you the title of her favorite obscure Elton John song). "Blue Eyes," he sings. "Baby's got blue eyes, like a deep blue sea, on a blue blue day/ Blue eyes, baby's got blue eyes, when the morning comes, I'll be far away..."
  
  Johnson, as it turns out, isn't the typical Texas singer-songwriter. With a bit of a bluesy slant and a mellow groove, Johnson is more John Mayer and Ben Harper, more Billy Joel and Elton John than he is Johnny Cash - not that he won't unleash some Johnny Cash on you if you request it. "I think it's more like laid-back rock," said Johnson of his sound. "I'm from Texas, but I don't have a twang in my voice... I love country music, I just don't gravitate toward that." Johnson's dates lately have been promoting his latest CD, "The Feeling I Got," and he'll be at Old Town Saloon again Tuesday night, then at Buffalo Wild Wings Wednesday performing songs from the pop- and rock-driven CD. "It's real indicative of stuff I really like. Every song means something to me," said Johnson. "I put my heart and soul into it." The CD's "Little Miss Amazing" is a jazzy, bluesy, neck-sliding groove. There's also the Latin bent of "Mercury."
  
  Johnson doesn't churn out the typical kind of love song, either. "There's a song on the new CD called "Rain." And IÕve written a new song, called "Weatherman." I definitely think I'm inspired by rain and nature, or just a beautiful sunset, a beautiful day... and whatever relationship I'm in at the time."
  
  It could be that Johnson's songwriting isn't so typical because his songwriting heroes are the great songwriters - the iconic songwriters. "I really like Jim Croce and Steve Miller," said Johnson, who is based in the Dallas area. "I love some of the R&B stuff, maybe Stevie Wonder, maybe Steely Dan, kind of a jazzy rock." For this latest collection, the follow-up for his sophomore CD, "Seethe," Johnson produced the CD himself. Production work, he said, is like being the chef in the kitchen, while songwriting is the actual creation of the dish.
  
  In fact, when Johnson performs, it's just him and his guitar. He performed with a band for a time, but three years ago, he thought it was time to go solo, and he has been solo ever since. It's kind of a wonder to watch him play. He punches a pedal down here for looping, and when he belts out "Wonderwall" by Oasis, he not only sings and plays guitar, but plays tambourine, too, which he has taps with his foot.

Performing on Thursday, May 1st, Nathan sang 4 songs off "The Feeling I Got", his latest CD release. Mark Wayne Glasmire took 1st place, with Nathan pulling in a close 2nd.

Set lengths can vary, depending upon venue, from 45 to 60 minutes. Nathan usually performs two sets per performance,
but is flexible depending on event needs.
