Biography

"A fixture of the Northern California folk scene, Joanne Rand is one of those people whose life, activism and art are woven seamlessly together. A longtime advocate for social and political justice, Rand is a celebrated musician, composer and teacher. From stripped-down folk songs to lush and textured rock arrangements, she makes consistently engaging, perceptive, universal music."
-www.SFStation.com 12/4/11
“Through her songs, Rand traverses love, politics, conservation, spirituality and life with a seasoned-to-perfection voice, that, according to Terry Tempest Williams, ‘Opens the doors of creation’.”
-Santa Cruz Weekly, 2010

Touring nationally for 25 years, appearing with Bonnie Raitt, Bob Weir, John Hartford, etc., Rand recently earned a Music Composition degree and released her tenth, eleventh and twelfth indie CDs back-to-back:
• •Snake Oil and Hummingbirds, © 2009 - Submitted for Grammy Nomination by San Francisco Recording Academy President.
• •Live with Claudia Paige, © 2010 – Recorded at high energy show with a world class drummer.
• •Rise, © 2011 - Ten new songs, personal, playful, intimate, universal, recorded at two recent performances with her band, and overdubbed with string arrangements and lush harmonies.

Writing and playing music since childhood in the Deep South, Rand cut her performance teeth playing bluegrass in Alaska and spun musical magic with natives in the Amazon. She spent six formative years touring from her remote homestead in the Pacific Northwest wilderness, fully launching her career in California’s North Bay Area, where she remains revered as one of the region’s finest independent artists. A North Bay Bohemian readers’ poll voted her “Best Acoustic Band,” and calls Rand a “legendary…longtime local hero.” “Nothing short of brilliant.” -Santa Rosa PD
