Biography
For 2010, Rick Monroe is in perpetual motion. Monroe is especially excited about his new single "Get UR Country ON, as well as the new Jager tour -- as it was a twinkle in his eye not long ago. He says, “ I'm very excited to see what was just a small idea become a reality. With my new music and thie tour, we’re off to a great start for 2010.”
Monroe’s extended road trip, (http://www.jagermeistermusictour.com/) with Eric Church and Josh Thompson is the SECOND Edition of the country themed series for the German based Jagermeister. The company decided to jump into the world of country music in 2009 in a big way and this summer's upcoming extravaganza is a result of Monroe's persistence and dedication to the project. Monroe believed in the tour to such an extent that he actually brought his band to GERMANY to play for the powers-that-be at Jagermeister. The Rick Monroe Band remains the first band ever to perform live for the honchos at Jager Corporate in Germany.
On the music side, in his new single (and upcoming video), "GET UR COUNTRY ON" (www.geturcountryon.com)Rick Monroe SENDS OUT A CALL to the Country -- and the Country Music Community. Through his artistry, Rick Monroe is a Country Music Road warrior who isn't averse to taking his music directly to the people. Rick says, "You know all those reality shows on TV... my life IS a reality show."
He's opened for the likes of Charlie Daniels, Dwight Yoakam, Montgomery Gentry, Marshall Tucker, Darryl Worley, Craig Morgan, Eric Church, Emerson Drive, Patty Loveless, Little Texas, Ricochet, The Birds, Black Hawk, Trick Pony, Shelly Wright, Sammy Kershaw and Billy Ray Cyrus & Miley Cyrus. He's toured Europe for the last 3 years and performed an average of 100 dates a year for the last 2 years. While at home in Nashville, he even makes room for a steady gig at Wildhorse Saloon.
No stranger to success Rick's latest album, Get Loud Get Lit spawned the single, Honky Tonk Road Trip. His Against the Grain unleashed the hit single Midnight Rider. Having received rave reviews in print and accolades on television shows such as EXTRA and ET, Rick's gritty Midnight Rider video is still in rotation on CMT PURE. And in support of the Against the Grain album for Divorce Records, Rick and his band successfully completed a 75 station Radio tour for "Midnight Rider."
Numerous corporations have noticed the artist's allure as well. Monroe has picked up sponsorship from Peavey, Jagermeister, Resitol Hats, Blue Berry Guitars, Vegas Fuel Energy Drink, GHS, Visual Sound and others.
A true ambassador of the genre, Monroe was among the first country artists to perform in Russia and China. His extensive touring history includes performances throughout Russia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Hungary, Honduras, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Bahamas, Germany, England, Netherlands and Switzerland, sharing the stage with a who's who of musical greats. At the request of Pete Peterson, US Ambassador to Vietnam, Rick performed at the week-long 4th of July celebrations in Hanoi and Ho Chi Mihn City. Monroe was honored to sing the US National anthem for the 5-year anniversary of the re-opening of diplomatic relations between the countries. This marking the first time the anthem had been sung at a public event in Vietnam in over 25 years.
He followed that up with a Command Performance for the former President of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev on the USS Sequoia Presidential Yacht, Washington, DC. This lead to a trip to Russia where Monroe performed at several orphanages and was a featured performer on REN TV's Bulat Okudzhava Festival in Moscow, Russia
Rick Monroe takes life experiences that we all share, the events that touch our hearts and creates music that speaks directly to the soul in each of us. Whether in an intimate setting accompanied only by his acoustic guitar, a good old honky-tonk, or on stage playing with his band to thousands at an outdoor festival halfway around the world, Rick strives to connect to his audiences. He is always a huge crowd pleaser.

It takes guts to cover a song as well-known as the classic "Midnight Rider,"
but THE MOVE PAYS OFF for indie artist Rick Monroe as he turns a fresh take on the Greg Allman/Robert Kim Payne country-rock chestnut. A native of Sarasota, Fla., Monroe has built a solid fan base through aggressive touring in the United States and overseas including dates in Russia, Bosnia, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Vietnam, Germany and England.
He has a warm, supple voice and brings an edgy energy to this often recorded number. The track is the lead single from his album, "Against the Grain," due June 21.
He's a musician's musician who is going to continue to play and sing somewhere whether country radio comes to the party or not, but some airwave exposure could give him the larger platform he deserves. -- Deborah Evans Price

Willie Nelson tried taking this Allman Brothers chestnut down a country road last year. This effort rearranges the familiar tune into even more of a hillbilly bopper. I still say the dang thing deserves to become a country smash. - Robert Oerman -

And with songs that cut through country to the rock and soul at its heart, he surely will be the pride of other places soon; maybe Nashville.

But they were wrong. Right off the top, these guys blasted their music tight and bold, in a perfectly matched back up to Rick Monroe’s own voice and presence. Each song had a life all its own and Rick's banter in between songs set the crowd at ease and made them want to hear more. At times it felt like the Universal Bar and Grill seemed to coast between the possibility of being a club in Nashville and the Sunset Strip. Rick Monroe’s band is the perfect group for those who have a love of country music but also to those who like to rock!

"AGAINST THE GRAIN" advance review

On the strength of his two previous CDs, he’s already riding a wave of popularity, notably through some high-profile international “command performances”. Not one to rest on past laurels, he’s planning a return European tour, specifically, in Germany.
This promo CD, to be officially released as Against the Grain, puts to rest any confusion over what “New Country” music is, i.e., blending various musical influences (soft rock, folk, Texas swing, and even a bit of blues) and underscoring it with a melodious country feeling. His admission, on “One More”, that he’s a “cityslicker, touch of shitkicker, got the blues in my soul” justifies his back-and-forth jaunts between L.A. and Nashville.
“I Remember the Music” (Ashley Gorley/Wade Kirby), possibly being marketed as the first U.S. single, sounds like something Canadian folk-rock hero Murray McLauchlan would have composed. This bluegrass-tinged soft-rocker hails the power of music intertwined with our good (and sometimes bad) reminiscences. It features stellar guest performances by Jeff King and Chris Luzinger on guitars, Michael Rhodes on bass, Larry Beaird on acoustic guitar and banjo, Tony Harrell on piano/keys and Owen Hale on drums. This same group of players also performs on “Grace” and “X on the Map”.
“Runaway”, a mid-tempo steel/slide guitar country waltz, exemplifies Rick’s great songwriting skills (in collaboration with Craig Bartock, Rick’s co-producer, who also provides backing instrumentation on several tracks) and wide-ranging vocals – very nice! Layered backing vocals add icing to this piece of cake.
On “One More”, attesting to the addictive properties of live performances, there’s barely a twang to be heard, but Rick throws in the odd yodel for genuine effect. This one’s a “two-step boogie-woogie” with a butt-kicking drumbeat.
Rick returns to folk-mellow mode on “X On the Map” (written by Don Schlitz), putting an interesting but melancholy spin on the “You Are Here” cartographic notation. It features some beautiful flat-picking and a subtle, synthesized string section. On the anthemic country-rock twist of amazing “Grace” (Ron Riddle), the metronomic notch gets upped a bit, decorated with more steel/slide guitar.
Rick’s “Daddy’s Little Girl” curiously stands out in its sorrowful melodrama, as most songs about one’s children do, but only a cold-hearted person would be put off by it.
Not to leave us on a sad note, “Dance Hall King” (surely the better first single?) swingingly proclaims his intention to be just that, but not without his lady-love on the dance floor with him! Now, this is country music at its rocking best – a fitting successor to the classic “Footloose”! Jeff Marshall, his collaborator here, provides drum programming, bass and electric guitar, with Rick playing acoustic guitar.
Surprisingly, there is an uncredited track closing the CD, called, “Love Bug”, which is catchy enough, and the “o-di-yo-di-yo-di-yo-di-o-lays” serve to remind us of that line-dancin’ “pure country” sound.
An instantly pleasurable collection of songs that begs to be put on “repeat” mode. -
