Artist Information

Biography

Cordcalling, a creative rock duo based in London, ON, is "doing more with less" (Jason Schneider of Kitchener ON's The Record, 2008). After playing with various talented musicians, Denise and Brian Conway realized that they could reveal their unique and creative sound best on their own. So, in 2006, they took the leap and began writing and performing songs that would uncover their intriguing musical style. Since their 2008 CD release, "When I Scream", they had been building a buzz leading up to their much-anticipated upcoming full-length release (November, 2010). Cordcalling’s showcase at Canadian Music Week 2009 solidified their musical potential where they shared the bill with such acclaimed acts as Sloan, The Trews, and Default. Receiving airplay from London's Best Rock FM 96 and charting on college radio; press such as The National Post, and performances at top venues, such as Toronto’s The Horseshoe Tavern, further demonstrates the power and determination of this duo. Cordcalling was one of the most nominated bands in The 2009 London Music Awards and was nominated for Best Rock Group again in 2010 and 2011. They have also been twice nominated for Fan Favorite in the Jack Richardson Awards.
This is only the beginning of their success since they have now released their first full-length CD, "Obsessed by the Light" and are continuing to tour and receive positive media at home and abroad. Before it was released, the song "Thank-You" was selected for a compilation CD associated with 1000 Acts of Kindness. Critics expressed their anticipation for the release of "Obsessed by the Light", likening Cordcalling's lead vocals to the legendary punk-rocker Patti Smith (London Free Press, London, ON, Sept., 2010). One common opinion among Cordcalling's critics is that the duo is unique and innovative. James Reaney remarks about Cordcalling's "compact, high-energy songs" that Cordcalling have "a style of their own" (London Free Press, London, ON, Nov., 2010). Chris Montanini of The Londoner (London, ON, Nov., 2010), agrees with that reflection and writes, "It's hard to pin down the grunge-esque rock duo Cordcalling". This view is also shared by Dave Clarke: "Cordcalling manages to mix punk, psych, grunge and Goth over the course of three tracks" (SCENE Magazine, London, ON, 2008).
Although creativity is very important to the duo, their music runs deeper than just artistic style. Cordcalling embodies the undertones of their name. Cord is the spiritual bond that connects them to one another and to their Maker. Calling is symbolic of their belief that everyone has a purpose. Cordcalling's purpose is to express to the world, in their unique and sincere way, the inner cries of the soul.

Discography

Obsessed by the Light - Full-Length CD
Released - November, 2010
(Independent)

"Obsessed by the Light" is Cordcalling's much-anticipated first full-length CD, following the buzz created by their "When I Scream" 3-Song Maxi-Single. It has a total of 11 tracks, including edited versions of the 3 songs on the Maxi-Single and 7 brand new recordings. Recorded and mixed by London Music Award Winner for Best Producer, Andre Doucette, at Charterhouse Studios, London, ON, and Mastered at The SoundLab, New Jersey, U.S., this CD is a solid representation of the duo's eclectic sound and songwork. James Reaney (London Free Press, London, ON, Nov. 18, 2010) writes that Cordcalling presents "a style of their own" within their "compact, high-energy songs". Similarly, reflecting on "Obsessed by the Light", Chris Montanini (The Londoner, London, ON, Nov. 18, 2010) states, "It's hard to pin down the grunge-esque London rock duo Cordcalling". With the success from their 3 Song Maxi-Single, "When I Scream" under their belts and one the new tracks, "Thank-You", being included on a compilation CD for 1000 Acts of Kindness even before the release of the album, "Obsessed by the Light" is off to a strong start in helping to further the duo's career and name in the industry.
