Biography
The 4 elements of SOPHISTAFUNK:
(1) a 1950s jazz club,
(2) a 1960s poetry den,
(3) a 1970s funk party,
(4) a 1980s hip hop show.
This analog soul trio has traveled from Portalnd, Maine to Portland, Oregon, bringing their unstoppable combination of vintage-keyboard savagery, thick, syncopated rhythms and socially conscious lyrical flow to audiences spanning the nation in-between. Known for their massive sound, the band wins over crowds one energetic and electrifying show at a time, thanks to their captivating stage presence and tight musicianship.
The group met in 2007 and started making a splash in the northeast quickly. After a tour out west with their friends in Thunderbody, Sophistafunk started taking over stages nation-wide and hasn't stopped since. Combining hip-hop, funk, electronic dance grooves, old school themes and otherwise unexplored musical territory, this multi-genre tour de force can make any body move.
Comprised of drummer Emanuel Washington, keyboardist Adam Gold and lyricist Jack Brown, Sophistafunk has collaborated live with Bernie Worrell (Parliament/Talking Heads), Doodlebug (Digable Planets), Joey Porter (Motet), Nikki Glaspie (Beyonce/Dumpstaphunk) and many others. The band was featured on an episode of "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives” with Guy Fieri, recorded live at Funk 'n Waffles, a Syracuse music venue owned by Gold. The episode premiered on December 24, 2012. The band was later invited to play Fieri's birthday party in Santa Rosa, California in January 2013 and most recently became the first band ever to play the International Home and Housewares Show in Chicago, IL, on March 3, 2013 after Fieri personally requested them to become the house band.
Sophistafunk will release a new EP in May 2013.
What people are saying:
"Combining the vibes of funk music with the intensity of hip hop and spoken-word poetry, Syracuse-based group SOPHISTAFUNK specializes in cross-genre music. The three-man band features vocals from Jack Brown, drums by Emanuel Washington, and keyboard, bass, & backup vocals by Adam Gold." - Evan Johnson, The Ithacan
"Syracuse’s SOPHISTAFUNK, who blended hip-hop, funk and rock flawlessly to create a sound very much their own, moved seamlessly between improvised jams on the keys, soul-filled choruses and blistering rapping... A remarkably proficient band of top notch musicians... a fantastic hip hop jazz band." - TJ Olsen, Beyond Race Magazine (New York City)
"SOPHISTAFUNK has a genre-destroying range of musical ability and mix of socially-conscious lyrics. Much of the trio’s set was spent rifling through thick instrumental funk, fluid vocals, soul crooning, metal, reggae and intricate interplay between Adam Gold’s four-keyboard setup and Emanuel Washington’s drums -- an infectious journey that left the full crowd gasping for air." - Dan Rys, The Daily Free Press (Boston)
"Syracuse's SOPHISTAFUNK, like the name implies, prefers its hip hop covered in a dripping later of funk. ...Between putting out an album, winning the 2009 Syracuse Big Break Contest, and opening for superstars like Fergie, it seems like the band is off to a great start." - Rob Sickelco, City News (Rochester)
"SOPHISTAFUNK has proved that they have the staying power to make an impact on our scene. Their full summer schedule includes a number of club shows and an alarming amount of festival performances. Be sure to catch them on the road this summer, you will not be disappointed... Who knew that merging the new school with the old school could be this much fun?" - Selena Hodom, The Groovelink Magazine

Instrumentation
Adam Gold - keys / bass / vocals
Keyboard virtuoso & funk energizer bunny Adam Gold is a one-man music machine. At every show, Adam plays the Fender Rhodes piano, Clavinet, and Moog Synthesizer while also singing and beatboxing! An unforgettable performer with an incredible retro stage presence, he is also very well known around Syracuse as a local funk DJ (WAER 88.3) and live music venue owner (Funk 'n Waffles).
Jack Brown - lyrics / vocals
Known for his complex flows and insightful lyrical content, Jack Brown became serious with music in 2005 while producing beats for the hip hop group THC. It didn't take long before Jack - a lifetime author & musician - began spreading his poetic Hip-Hop style to audiences who have never seen or heard anything like him. The young MC has already shared the stage with the likes of Method Man, Fergie, Asher Roth, Sean Kingston, Inspectah Deck & many others. Jack was featured on the Projected Mixtape Series Volumes 1, 2, and 3 and receives regular airplay in NYC (WSIA 88.9).
Emanuel Washington - drums
Since before he could walk, Emanuel Washington has had drum sticks in his hands. He began playing the drums in church at age 5 and the rest is history. Along the way, E created his own unique style that is very personal and expressive. He puts a tremendous amount of passion and positive energy into his music, so sit back and enjoy his creative grooves.
