Toronto, ON-based singer-songwriter Kristin Lindell displays a warm vocal style and jazzy delivery on this enjoyable collection of original, melodic, folk-tinged tunes. A few were co-written with the album's producer, Bret Higgins (Great Lake Swimmers). Another Great Lake Swimmers member who contributes on two tracks is fiddler/backing vocalist Miranda Mulholland; she helps make "Linden Tree" a highlight. A notable cast of players and backing singers also include Josh Van Tassell, Joel Schwartz, Robbie Grunwald, and Jadea Kelly. Reference points for Lindell's work would include Norah Jones and Eva Cassidy. Other highlights are the gospel-inflected "Shall We Gather at the River" and the sweet "Hear Me Callin.'" There's an upbeat, optimistic feel to Overflowing and the lyrics reflect Lindell's passion for the environment (she spent over a decade working for eco causes).

Overflowing is the title of this latest recording by Lindell who, before deciding to become a musician, worked as an eco-activist and social justice educator. It starts out light and breezy, with a fun, rollicking feeling, but gradually shifts into a much more sombre, serious and contemplative tone.
Lindell has surrounded herself with some excellent players, all under the production wing of Great Lakes Swimmers' Bret Higgins, for whom Lindell has no end of praise. Higgins has infused her songs with a feeling and an atmosphere that nicely complements her uplifting lyrics. The ten songs that make up Overflowing are brimming with passion, love, and hope…good things to listen to in these days of economic and political gloom and doom.
Lift Up Your Heart starts the CD off in almost a reggae spirit, while Lindell channels her best Patsy Cline for Hear Me Callin', a great country-swing number with B3 organ pads in the background and strong slide guitar riffs. Switching to a more bluegrass sound, Linden Tree has Lindell sounding like Alison Kraus with her gently rolling rhythms and soft vocals. She keeps up that country feeling with Keep On, greatly aided by Miranda Mulholland's fiddle playing and Joel Schwartz's resonator guitar solo. Before leaving the country mood, Lindell presents her own original take on one of my favourite old spirituals Shall We Gather at the River.
Overflowing starts into its more contemplative mood with the song Our Love Shines, a strong, slow ballad about the power of love (“Our love shines through the darkness/Our love melts through the cold/Our love shines”). It continues with A Thousand Voices, with lyrics that take love into a more spiritual realm (“We lay in the song of a thousand voices.../Our love builds a chord on the lute of God, singing/This is how our song begins”), ending up with the title song – Overflowing –a song of hope for the future (“One day my ship will come sailing in/Overflowing, overflowing”). In between we catch a glimpse of the sexier side of Lindell when she sings You Know That I Want You (“I am the ocean and you are my shore/I want to caress you and rush through your door”).
Overflowing was launched Nov. 1 at C'est What? downtown. There was a great crowd on hand to hear Lindell and her band (Schwartz, Bret Higgins, bass; Robbie Grunwald, piano; Joshua Van Tessel, drums) and Kristin reported that the evening's launch was “a big hit!”
She said she hopes to take the band on the road soon in support of the CD. You can find out more about Kristin Lindell – and order Overflowing – by visiting kristinlindell.com.

Have you ever met someone that lifts you right up with their love of life and the rare ability to see the magic in almost everything? I was honored to meet Kristin Lindell for the first time and each time we see each other, I look forward to the joy she brings to our space. I am grateful that someone so talented and full of love is so generously sharing her gift with the world in the form of music.
When this talented musician invited my husband and I to her latest CD ‘Overflowing’ launch party, the answer was an instant yes. We have been part of music circles with her in the past and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. What better way to enjoy an evening than with friends, music and delicious food!
The gathering took place in London, ON and was hosted by Chris Sheridan and Trae Robinson. Kristin’s idea of having an interactive audience was a great way for everyone to get involved so the evening began with a drum circle that raised vibrations in the room and opened our hearts for a night of musical bliss.
As she launched into her set, we were treated to the history behind some of the lyrics and invited to sing along. The evening flowed from one musical experience to the next, in similar fashion to how Kristin believes life is to be lived – with a natural rhythm and flow.
The evening closed with more drumming and an open jam where everyone was welcome to join. It was a powerful way to unite a group of extremely talented souls, led by a remarkable heart who, like the album title is Overflowing with love.KL-CD.jpg Her songs from the heart and ecclectic sound left us all feeling uplifted and joyful. It was truly beautiful.
Kristin grew up in Toronto and has an extensive background in music and performing arts. A lover of music with a desire to save the world, she studied political science first before completing a degree in music from York University.
Her main passions are music and social justice so she has enjoyed time working with youth groups, environmental groups and has had a positive impact on many lives by weaving awareness of social and environmental issues into her music.
She describes music as a way to express her ideas and feelings and describes her approach to creating music as 'allowing her soul to guide her'. A writer and performer of this unique combination of “soulful roots infused with folk and blues”, Kristin is often compared to the likes of Norah Jones, Madeleine Peyroux and Joni Mitchell.
'Overflowing' is the second CD she has released although many more exist. She says that each song on the CD is a journey into a moment and each one shares a story of love, hope and the beauty of a memory. The listener cannot help but be uplifted and moved by each and every song and often I feel myself being reminded of my own memories as I listen to her lyrics and get swept away in the moment.
She loves how music can express ideas and impact people to make changes in their hearts and minds. The beauty that Kristin sees in the world is what sparks her creativity and this heart centred music is truly a celebration of love and life as she sees it in nature, the universe and daily life.
Krisin is eternally grateful for the love in her life and gives recognition to her beautiful family, her voice teacher Sacha Williamson and her dance teacher Erica Ross who has helped her get in touch with her body and feeling. She is also eternally grateful to Producer and bass player for Great Lake Swimmers, Bret Higgins, Joel Schwartz on guitar and mandolin, Josh Van Tassel on drums, and Miranda Mulholland on the fiddle.

What keeps me going: an overflowing heart, a passion for life’s beauty, joy, an abundance of energy, the synergy and unity music brings. Music allows us to speak from the soul, to capture what lies deep within us.
Also, music brings people together in amazing ways, the connection we feel with other musicians, collaborators and our audience is sheer magic.
I sing because ideas and feelings are constantly dancing in my being and they need to be expressed. My songs are an inspiration for people to follow their own passion whether it’s gardening, cooking, writing, painting, social change. Music is an engine for social change, inspiration, and expressing the soul’s desires.
