Artist Information
Biography
Common Thrill creates intense musical moments that carry many emotions; anger, joy, sadness, confusion, etc.
They are influenced by Pink Floyd, Radiohead, the Doves, Snow Patrol, Interpol, Muse, Jeff Buckley and U2. In fact, Common Thrill just worked with Radiohead's producer/live soundman, Jim Warren ("The Bends", "I Might Be Wrong"), finishing a six-song EP in Spring 2005. They are the rare rock band that can put you in a beautiful dream state ('Morhpine Drip') or rock you where you stand ('Whiskey Glow', 'Like It Is'). Singer John Courduvelis sings beautifully and with passion over the blending, whirling guitars of Rich DeCaprio and Brian Fernald, and the sexy grooves of drummer/co-founder (with Courduvelis) Neil Bowman and bassist Mark Kelley. Very few bands can write great songs in many moods and genres that don't sound all the same. They are a common thrill to those who let music speak to them.
Instrumentation
John Courduvelis: Vocals, keys.
Neil Bowman: Drums, backing vocals.
Rich DeCaprio: Guitars, keys, samples.
Brian Fernald: Guitars, backing vocals.
Mark Kelley: Bass.
Discography
"Common Thrill" produced by Jim Warren (Radiohead). The CD was released April 30, 2005. Thrill is currently being featured by Clear Channel radio station websites (over 144 nationwide) through December 2005, during their Discover New Music promotion that highlights the hottest unsigned bands. Common Thrill were chosen by Garageband.com to be promoted by Clear Channel because they were the one of the most highly rated and charting bands on the website. "Whiskey Glow", produced by Warren, was featured on the PBS series, "Road Trip Nation 2005". It reached #3 on the Rock charts on Garageband.com, and was awarded both Song of the Day (TWICE!) and Track of the Week on GB.com. 'Morphine Drip' is being featured by the legendary Boston radio station, WFNX, one of the very first Alternative rock stations in the country. 'Morphine Drip' also was Track of the Day twice and Track of the Week on Garageband.com.
An early EP,"may", was released in Aug. 2000 and resoundingly hailed by the Boston Globe.

Common Thrill's "textural brilliance", by the Noise.

Common Thrill 6 songs More apparent in these songs...Common Thrill 6 songs
More apparent in these songs than on their first demo CD a few years back, is that vocalist John Courduvelis is the illegitimate bastard lovechild of jim Morrison and Jeff Buckley. Common Thrill have
had their fair share of lineup changes, but this EP proves that those changes were definitely for the better. There are moments of this disc that recall the textural brilliance of 10cc circa 1976 ("I'm Not in Love"). Very few bands can be rootsy ("Whiskey Glow") and atmospheric ("Morphine Drip") in the way that this band is. While their influences may be easy to spot by the more cynical, Common Thrill doesn't sound like anyone, or perhaps they sound like a lot of different things, but filtered very well. It is a shame that two of these tracks are hidden as they are pretty cool, though not as meticulously produced. commonthrill.net

Dark Shadows
From the deep dark mystery synth, this audio dreamscape lays out an ethereal field of flowers, and provides the vocal partner to float slow-motion through the flowers. There is a trip in store for all who drift the distance and experience the musical ecstasy.
What a masterpiece of passion!

Dreamy and trance like
An interesting sound that reminds me of Jeff Buckley.
The song builds up well and keeps you interested all the way to the end. The contract between the chorus and verses is also song adding to the effect of the song.
I had troubles focusing on the lyrics as I found the rest of the production distracting me too much. Having said that I loved the vocals, but have little to say about the lyrics as you requested.
All in all one of the best songs I have come across on GarageBand.com

Press play (again and again)
Wow! The somewhat androgenous vocals are worth waiting for. I was just thinking how the start was somewhat similar to Dark side of the Moon by Pink Floyd through a glass darkly and then I get blown away.
The reference to PF is probably the use of open space in the song (nice)! and the reverb permeating the instruments. The vocals, which also drop down to a voice similar to Bono's in some ways) are a great compliment to the music (and vice versa).
An intelligent song which has its own internal dynamics. It's over! That can't be 5 minutes!!! Top marks from me! PRESSES THE START BUTTON AGAIN!

morphine, baby!
What a beautiful trance I fell into when the musical intro got underway... and how delighted I was when the vocals started and melded so well with the mood and instrumentation... really pretty sounds. Enjoyed the ride.

Soothing and Melodic.
At first I didn't think I'd like this song. But I gave it a chance and actually trully enjoyed the song. I actually find the song rather soothing.
First off, you remind me of a band called Red House Painters. If you haven't heard of them try downloading a song named Katy Song. I think you'll enjoy it a lot.
Second, I love that background noise/affect. Without a doubt the best part. Your mixing job seems to be quite spectacular. I think I might find it hard giving you ideas on what to change.
As far as I can pass on to you is the following. I don't really see much in my opinion to change with this song. What I would do however is have a careful choice regarding your stable of other songs. Most people aren't going to want to hear many songs like that. It will be too repetitive and too much of the same thing is never good.
Good Luck, and I wait with anticipation until I might download this mp3.

Very nice lush, dramatic piece with thick int..
Lush synth/piano intro -- perfect nod song for the Rush/oxy set (morphine drips down, in the first phrase).
Dramatic falsetto vocals with guts. Very nice feedbacky/distorted guitar gives it even more heart.
Strains of American Music Club here. I would run your next lyrics through the mill a little more.

i like
nice little intro with the atmoshere and soft guitar...i like the imagery of the lyrics....talking about the morphine dripping down...the song works on several different levels...the great build adds to the tension
- gogogungho from Athens, Georgia on 26Aug2004
nice vocals
i liked the vox, i thought maybe the song dragged a bit. the lyrics were good, but the verse was so long that they lost there power, maybe you should shorten the verse. the mood was nice, i've heard it before but that doesn't make it bad. maybe try to get to the chorus sooner, and rip into those guitars, rock out a little more, and this song would be grand.

Trippy Intro
Cool intro... It hooked me right from the beggining. I was deep in anticipation at learning what the rest of the song would be like. The mood is... dreary. Its raining at my house right now, and this song fits the weather perfectly. Lyrics are very poetic, and quite frankly... interesting. Not a bad song at all. Good job!
- dannerogers from Bellevue, Washington on 24Aug2004
Drifting Octaves....
Keyboard intro interested me with the guitars creeping in to complement the mood - vocals drifting and hazy - nice...!.. Otherwise very early radiohead with drifts and phazes using big octave crashes that creep in on guitar...... Not particularly my cup of tea (certainly not for slipknot fans) - but has its place in the big musical world . BEst of luck.

Ambient and Sleepy
Nice. It started out with purdy ambiant soudns and moved on to a cool wall of sound center. I can imagine you creating a Pink Floyd type albumn. Not nessisarilly music that you hear on the radio, but engaging music that is to be listened to as a whole, not as a single. Great work guys

passion rises over slow thick ambient texture..
Soothing M7 electronica intro. Add a little gently chiming guitar, then enter b5 lead vocal. Mood is strong, ala Pink Floyd. Lyric is poetic and, well, lyrical, and it fits well with the music. Interesting voice, slightly androgenous when soft and falsetto-ing, but always expressive and passionate. Nice ethereal drop slide chord ending. For its aim, this song hits the mark.

What sad
Spacial keyboards, vocals full of sadness... It could be just another sad song. But the power of the lead vocals really got me. I thought it was Radiohead. The mood is not so especial but it would make me hear this song other times. It makes me wonder...

Ok, I'm not sure how KD Lang ended up in a guys body and sang songs about drugs but I'm sure I'm pretty confused here. Dude you have that sexy thing going on with your voice that really creeps me out. Cool ambience but too slimy.

Great original song and vocalist.
Well the lyrics were deep in their meaning and I could feel what the vocalist was conveying to the listener and the singer has a beautifull voice and very unique and has a sound all their own. The mood of the track, music and vocals fit together so perfect I must say and this is a song I for sure would listen to agin and play for my friends to check out. I think you have a great future in the music industry. Sean

the hand of time
You asked for comments on Lyrics and mood. The mood created here is one of an erie intense dream which that of you can not escape and you are falling. The lyrics are very poetic and create great imagery, and the vocals show great range, i also like the singing parts mixed with spoken words great stuff. During the verse i think that the one guitar (with the chorus effect)mainly in the right part of the mix that doesnt quite sound correct. Great emotion, mood and overall a very nice track. I'd also like to comment on the bass, it sounds fantastic and the mising through-out the song was well done.

hi
electronica-esque mood intro...cool cool. i like the heavenly synth pad in the back ground. reminds me of the velvet underground 2001. the lyrics are very poetic. i really dig the 3/4 or 6/8 or whatever. very cool! extra points for that. i would like to hear mroe harmonies vocally...the mood is haunting.

sci fi style
i feel like i'm watching the x-files. the mood is Pink Floyd smokes crack during the twilight zone or something.
the vocals are good. the 1st part it sounds like pain is coming thru the voice.
the lyrics are good but nothing that hasn't been done MANY times before. 'your heart' and 'let go' are cliches.
You sound like coldplay. VERY good for your style of music.
i listened to the entire track and liked it overall!!

Good chill music.
The mood of this song is perfectly set. I believe that it invokes exactly the emotion that the band was looking for. As far as originality goes, it's somewhat lacking. It sounds an awful lot like Radiohead. The vocalist is excellent. He has a wonderful range and an excellent set of pipes. Good song, not altogther original.

Damn!
Atmospheric intro, keys and some nice guitar-chordal work.
This has an almost 'sacred' feel to it-like a psalm. (the gospelish 12/8 feel underscoring this element).
There are loads of singers out there doing that Thom Yorke/Jeff Buckley thing, but rarely this damn good. Incredible vocals, the notes are nailed with supreme intensity and dedication. Lyrics wise this is ambitious with grand images of "fallen leaves", "dream in the heart" etc.etc. Personally I think holding back a bit on the 'poetic' metaphors might be a good idea since it's been done better before by true poets. When something is delivered this exceptionally musically there is a natural temptation to have the lyrics built on the same 'scale'. There are some fine images here, and the abstract idea as a basis for the theme is fine. Like what Pacino said about acting: take it to the limit. then pull it back...Anyhow, all the way great job by the band, dynamic and energetic, and vocals...damn!

Pleasing to the ears.
Intro kinda reminds me of U2, good guitar. Vocals have a Radio Head feel to it. Good voice, very original sound. Good vocal range as well. I even get a hint of Bono at times. Music is really good, soft with an edge, good arrangement. Nice effects too. Production is really good as well. This has a real good original sound, and it's just pleasing to the ears. Nice song.

Chill
The beginning of the some gives me the impression i'm in a star wars movie. I've got to give him credit for the vocals, their enjoyable. I could picture this song, especially with those vocals, on a soundtrack. The lyrics are better than some of those I've recently reviewed and I love the fact that I can actually UNDERSTAND what he's saying. The mood of the song is very chill. I almost get the impression that he's trying to be calm, but bursting with emotion inside at all the same time. It almost reminds me of something Counting Crows would do if you took away their testosterone. I like the instrumentals and I think there is a lot of potential here. I enjoyed it.

Dirty Rubber Duck Reviews
Cool beginning, maybe takes a bit too long to get going. Nice vocal sound - is that lead vocal compressed to the mix or what? But I like the effect. Need a new chord change by 3- 4 minutes into the song - a bridge or something. I generally like the song/sound you are getting - some refinement and you could have a winner!

Smooth as butter!
The intro is very smooth and buttery, then as the voice comes in, It's bread & butter, and that's
great, and just as if that wasn't enough, these sweet, tweaked sounding instrument's kick in and give it the icing I thought wasn't gonna fly!
Boy was I wrong and Man was this song totally right! I can't criticize, any further for it will be nothing but compliment's. Awsome
sounds, awsome performance all around! Fantastic job dudes! thanks!

raise the veil
we all have a veil put over our memories at birth, this song is faintly reminescent of this phenomenon, it reminds me of going home to whitelight, somewhat spiritual and speaks of graduation, what is eerie here right now, is that I am listening as i am writing, "let it go", and somehow I knew this song would lead us back to the way home. Excellent work people. We are only imprisoned by the leash we tie ourselves to. The vocals are well controlled, the effects are well placed and the overall mix is pretty good as well, the only thing i would change would be to raise the level of the vocals somewhat towards the end, perhaps with a fade to the vocals after wards. good melody, structure, beat and original. I like it a lot

Excellent slow dark song with great guitars a..
The moogy pad used in the intro is fantastic with that watery piano. It immediately sets a dark sullen mood to the song. The lyrics are well written, and very well sung, with a lot of emotion. The lead singer has a great vocal range, and a great resonant voice. The slow guitar parts remind me of older Pink Floyd, but in the chorus of the song, I feel like I'm listening to U2. The composition is great - a lot of melody and nice harmonies. The siren sounds and other accent accompaniments give this track a larger-than-life feel. I would REALLY like to see this track performed live! Even though it's a slow song, it has a LOT of energy! Brilliant work!

spine tingling
Modern ambience to intro. Sad mood in intro, good slow pulsing timing. Interesting lyrics- gave me shivers up my spine. Reminds me of tom york in bits. Not sure if this is about heroin addiction or a hospital visit. The vocals are a little too far behind the instruments. The sound is too tinny for my liking. The backing instruments are beautifully played, good emotion and timing. I am left depressed but i did enjoy this song, very emotional. It is long but keeps the attention until the end. This is unusual

Very nice intro. Nice, opiated mood and vocal melody up until it kicks in. The screams seem a bit strained and painful. Perhaps some more vocal effects would beefin that up.

Radiohead Revival
Synth intro is nice but a little obvious. Nice guitar follows. Almost a King Crimson/Pink Floyd/Radiohead feel here, with a doped-out sound.
Good vocals enhance the build-up into a soft crescendo with backward sounding guitars effects and swirling rythms. Definitely Radiohead fans, and that's not bad in my book.
The lyrics are a little too artsy for their own good, but it's a beautiful song with a lot of emotional input. I'd like to see this live with a great light show in a big arena.
Overall, nice work, but derivative. Keep it up!

Let it go . . .
Nice intro ... Like a dark Orbital. It takes a little bit to get rolling, but its cool. When it does, the mix is great, as is the overall mood.
Vocals are shimmering and beautiful against this ethereal landscape. Good production really makes this rock.
The slow tempo and was really leaves one hanging on every note.
When the drums kick in, they sound a little thin against everything else ... perhaps they could have been produced slightly better - the snare dum particularly is weak.
Love the guitar and vocal effect against one another and the bass is really warm and sweet sounding.
About halfway, the guitar layers are great and the bridge works well in moving the song along.
As we slow again and the vocals kick in, the cool ethereal thing is really working ... so warm and sweet.
Choruses become more emotional with almost a bluesy character, but are never trite.
This is good writing and great production ... A pleasure to listen to !

atmospheric
This is very airy and atmostperic. The synth sort of leads into the song in the intro followed by and airy guitar that is really quiet and much in the back of this music. The weird sound effects add depth to the overall sound. The chorus is angry and powerful. The lyrics are pretty well done and angst ridden. overall pretty decent material

soothing and dreamy
the lyrics suited the mood of the song, which was super-languid in the verse but more strained in the chorus. the singer had a nice jeff buckley-type vibrato at times but missed pitches here and there. i didn't feel that the verse came into the chorus as well as it could have. maybe some different chords there. but again, the mood was very calming and somnolent.

Mellow Sunny Day... Great Shout Chorus!
Interesting keyboard pad choice. The echoey guitar is nice. I like that smooth, warm sound. The vocals are good, but sounds a bit like you're trying too hard. Too much vibrato. The expression seems a bit over the top for this mellow of a song. Some intonation problems too. The vocals work much better in the loud passage. This part sounds great. I would say just hold your expressiveness off until here. It really works here. Nice guitar noise / feedback, too. Tastefully done. Your song writing is good. This reminds me of Sunny Day Real Estate's better work. Nice job!

Big Potential..
Nice intro. Until the vocal. TOo weak for the initial melody. Not bad voice though. The Jeff Buckley whining gets a little irritating. total space
Interesting intro for this tune. I feel like I'm in space when I listen to this relaxed beginning. The vocals come in and just add a nice sense of character. The production is top notch and the lyrics are positive. The mood in this song is happy and sedated really. It's a great fade out or just unwinding song to listen to. Epic
The guitar on the intro is a lovely touch and helps to create a real sense of anticipation. The track builds well, and the vocals are distinctive and strong. Nice use of reversed layers on the louder parts, and the percussion is extremely effective in giving the piece dynamics. One complaint I do have is the length; as a five minute recording, this may lose some listeners, but overall, this was a fine track and the better of the two that I reviewed.

im not against techno-y intros its just the past 4 songs had them, wow, i actualy feel like im on morphine,,, great mood, very slow to develope, it would work well as a soundtrack to a movie or somthing, vocals are jeff beck sounding at moments, you could use to turn up the guitars in the harder parts to add some more punch and help them carry, not much more to say you get a thumbs up in my book

Am I underwater?
This song makes me feel like I'm swimming in the deep ocean, staring up and seeing tiny flakes of light filter down through the immense indigo. Very chill. This song has a great beat and mood.
The vocals are sometimes a little out of tune, but a little more practice could fix that.
The random sounds in the middle are cool and add a surreal effect that is really cool. The lyrics are also quite interesting, but I couldn't understand all of them.
- sandwich_offend from Ames, Iowa on 4Jul2004

very laid back
I definitely like the mood this song sets--the major-seventh chords always make things sound sort of laid back, and these are nice. Kind of reminds me of a breezy rainy day--the piano notes sound somehow like raindrops. And something about the way the bass line occasionally climbs sounds sort of final/end-of-something-ish, which fits with the idea of it being "time to let go." I like the poetry of the lyrics, and I really like the vocalist's performance and voice. And something about his style reminds me of Jeff Buckley.

(((((Floating in space))))))
Great intro, I wasn't sure what kind of music was going to fade in, then this beautiful delay guitar line comes in and I knew I was going to immediately like this song.
The way the drums comes in at the second verse is genius, and then the distortion comes like an exploding comet, the voice floats over the music like a ghost.
Radiohead meets Paloalto, wrapped in gorgeous melody, stellar production, and raw emotion that is seldom heard on this website.

Radioheadish
Synth intro...? Anyway. Nice guitone. Mix is nice. Voice is decent. Kinda radiohead-ish tremolo on the vox. A little too radiohead-ish, IMHO. "How will I know when its time to let go? Let it go." ...not very inspired. Good effort overall, but not original sounding.

If U2 Ever Need To Replace Bono
I suspect this band is heavily influenced by U2 and Radiohead, and maybe even Coldplay - though gladly, they are a lot heavier. The singer for sure sound like Bono (on the repeated line 'let it go' it is especially scary how similar). The mood is OK Computer like - still sounds gorgeous and impressive, but not very original by now. The production suggest how far indie recordings have gone - it sounds as good as your million of dollars production of Radiohead - that instrumental bit after the first 'let it go' chorus is beautifully executed and very powerful. The singer is a king - perfect control on the voice, up and down with no problem and very precise. I feel ambivalent about this track overall. 7 years ago, the mood would have been on, and four years ago this band could have been a better 'Radiohead follow-up' than the boring Coldplay, but now it feels like a waste of talent - the band sounding too much like U2 and Radiohead and less like themselves. Huge-huge potential for sure, both musically and commercially.

Musings
Reminiscent of Radiohead. Vocal have that same pained and tortured angst as Thom York or the guy from Muse. These two bands are not particularly my favourite but I can acknowledge their ability and can see a similar ability here. The dynamics of the band are first rate. Great drums and guitars and a sublime mood that suits the more than competant lyrical musings.

Good production. Great expressive vocals. Cool guitars during chorus. Imaginative lyrics. Crying, depressive song but engaging. This band would shine with aggresive, danceable beats. Band has good potential.

Love Story!
Wow, this sure as h**l has a great mood to it. The stereo picture might be too far apart for my taste but it doesn't really matter. This is a strong song and the vocalist's vibrato is excellent. But then it gets just cheezy. I don't like lovesongs and I think this is one, but can't really tell.

Waltz Disney
This is a nice 3/4 tune. Band really paints a wonderful sound tapestry in the background. The vocalist (female) has a a nice distinctive style. Reminds me a bit of a heavier Betty Seveert with a Radiohead guitar flourish. Digs deep. Lyrics are average. "Dream in your heart" is a bit cliche for me.

... and I don't even usually listen to this sort of cross-over-southern-style rock. More proof that not everything sucks on garageband.com (although there are an awful lot of dogs, you have to admit). The mood is great. Some talented-ass musicians right here. The melodoes and the guitar chords doing that cross-note shit - very impressive. This is pro-level stuff in my opinion. Fucking great! Good luck with the dream, you guys - you deserve it!

Western style
I like the guitar riffs, very cathing western style!
The mood I can't follow, it seems like there's no story it the vocal, I can't read his feelings in the voice!
I think that the band sounds a little like a danish band called DAD.

Free flowing rock bliss..
This song has that real rock charm that stems from performers the likes of tom petty, the doors and stevie ray vaughn. There is a nice story to the song that draws the listener in. Kudos to the songwriter here, overall band effort is solid and produces a good distinct atmosphere. Excellent effort.

Wicked.
This is very unoriginal. I guess the lyrics is what the band focusses on - and they are good. But the music is not great. The singer can sing, but seldom show it. Good melody in chorus though.

This is the stuff I like. Great song. I would definitely buy it. Great guitar parts ... esp. this scratching stuff! The voice is .... nothing to add. Though I feel that you break the "doors-style" in the refrain. Keep up that work. This is the first song I rate a 5! It reminds me a bit of Tito & Tarantula too.

Right on Johnny Cash!
The guitars are definately hitting. Just the right amount and not blocking out the vocalist.
The mood is pretty interesting. I kind of got the feeling like this song should be used in one of those Lost Boys, Near Dark type vampire movies.
As far as who you sound like, did I mention Johnny Cash (the speaking parts), and I'm not sure who else. Maybe the Stray Cats.

I think this track is a waste of time for all GB reviewers in the "Rock" genre. Man, at least the production should be not tha muddy.

Different and very cool.
Very nice production.
The singer has a great voice for this song.
The mood is very coooool. Its the best part of the song. I love the swing and the vocals and the guitars. They all sound like they come from different genres, but they all work together.
Sounds like The Doors meets rockabilly meets southern rock. I don't really know of a band that you sound like. You have a very original sound.
The guitars fit really well in this song. The lead is ok but I'd like to hear something a little more melodic.
I like the second lead better than the first. It fits the song. Great tone and emotion.
Nice ending.
Very nice job.

The intro is great. Very GROOVY.The guitar riffs and chord progressions flow smoothly. The talking is cool too. I'm reminded of QOTSA, not to mention the great Tom Petty. I would definately keep this up. The style suits ya'll very well. The lead parts fit perfect. And all I can say about the bridge/solo is inFRICKINGcredable. The mood overall is very upbeat, not quite giddy. I would so go on a roadtrip to this song alone. Keep up the good work gentiles, and ROCK ON!!!!

i absolutely fell in love with the rawness of this track. the lyrics were absolutely killer and the guitar nasty. i loved the production and the arrangement. there was a false innocence in the verses that was totally dispelled in the chorus giving this song a really cool mood (good boy/bad boy).sounded pretty original to me. the vocals sounded a very tiny bit like U2 but better. this one should get you noticed...cool stuff!

Nice, I like this song. It's not the most original sounding song, with the obvious Jim Morrison, Beck, Johnny Cash style vocals, but they're still done well though.
Nice production, one of the best I've heard on this site so far. Everything is crisp and clear.
Guitars have a great sound to them, though the first 'solo' section stands out alot better than the last one at the end of the song. Bass and drums provide a good, solid backbeat, and don't intrude on the rest of the song - nice, effective restraint.
The song's got a really cool, Texas dive bar kind of mood to it, which is kind of refreshing. Great job.

TWANG!
I like the sound of the guitars, very twangy country like grunge. Is that an uoright walkin' back there? this is pretty cool track, it's like psycobilly (The Nekromatix, Devils Brigade, The Horror Pops, Tiger Army) but it's more chill and not so crazy fast. it's a great mood, this song is cool as all hell. i dig, maybe, it's the stray cats meets some kinda punky thing with a tad o' country. I like it alot, don't change a thing.

Very confidant sounding band. They are good at what they do, and they know it. I like arrogance...very cool. The guitars are very old school blues/rock. My Wicked Wayyyyyyyyyyyys
This is a song with a very cool vibe. The spoken word vocals contrast nicely with the melodic & powerful chorus.
The band has asked for comments on:
1 - Guitars - offer nice jangly strumming, a little blues lick here and there, and some powerful chordal / lead work. Your guitar tone is really awesome. It sounds like an overdriven Fender, which is a great sound.
2 - Mood - mysterious and dangerous...pulls the listener right in from the start.
3 - Who Do We Sound Like? -This is kinda like The Strokes singer on vocals with more of a bayou / bluesy band feel. Almost like an updatated "Radar Love" kind of style.
Great work.

interesting
Cool hook, you get me right off the bat. You asked who you sound like... the song (minus the vocals) could land right on that new Aerosmith album. Can't you hear "Baby please don't go!" in this one? The mood is hard to describe, but I'd have to say it sounds like a driving song - long highway, late at night... this actually would make an excellent soundtrack to a movie. Driving across the desert, or on the highway, or late at night down the city streets... the song just seems to drive along with the rolling bassline; the drum fills are excellent and don't take away from the driving beat - almost like a ZZ Top boogie. I'm loving this! Extra credit for belonging in a soundtrack, and for best bass.

Great Groove!
Hearing the spoken word rather than sung is cool, nice touch to a almost perfect arrangement. It takes a bit to wind up this rocking tune but it does and with the mix of spoken and sung song it simply "works"! The guitar work takes a while to show it's brilliance but when it kicks in it turns a ballad into a rocking tune. This song if not getting regular air play "should" it is a great number with sound musicians and a very cool arrangement...good job, well done...congrat's

OK, I dig the modern Johnny Cash meets Roy Orbinson thing going on here...The guitars are creating a really cool layer of angst for the rest of the track to roll around and play on. Pretty Good Song
The first thing that came to my mind when I heard the guitar come in was "The Doors" this first inclination was followed through when the singer came in, he's got a real good Jim Morrison quality to him, he speaks the words during the verse, and then rocks them out during the chorus.
The production on this track is really good, the mix and the levels are all bang on and I am sure it would sound even better if I wasn't listening to it through real player!!!
I really like the sliding leads during the chorus they really compliment the song, and help the song break out into a great solo.
This song flows really nicely and I enjoyed listening to it alot.

Not bad
Sounded like country at first and I shrieked, but the vocals brought something different when they started talking. Sounds like a stoner song. With those lyrics however and this music, the chord progression is crying out for a dominant 7th Dominant chord. Like instead of playing that minor chord try a major. That would breathe life into this song, oh yes. Not bad song. I wouldn't mind hearing any other songs you have now that I've heard the whole thing. It's kinda cool. btw--guitars are good and broad in the voicings. Mood is good but like I said fix that dominant chord. Reminds me of Queens of the Stone Age.

Yeah. Like something from a Quentin Tarantino..
This is original. Love the funck walking bass. Great everywhere, all the nooks and crannies are covered.
I don't know what to say - love the guitar pad in the chorus (2:01, etc.). Great production. I don't find any flaws. Great musicianship, songwriting, my toes were tapping throughout. Spooky lead vox at 2:35.
Excellent mix - other bands should pay attention to this. It just sounds so pro.
I could easily see this in a Quentin Tarantino flick. Cool guitar at the end and beginning. I had to listen to this twice (I tried to keep my mouse from clicking on the play again but it wouldn't obey).
Very pro, very catchy. Makes me wanna dance, and I'm an old guy who hasn't danced for ever!

THIS IS MY KINDA ROCK!-THE TALKY VERSES PROVIDE GOOD CONTAST TO THE REST OF THE SONG-CHORUS MELODY & PUNCH IS EXCELLENT. HARD COUNTRY ROCK, WITH A LITTLE SWING TO IT-I LIKE THE TONE AND QUALITY OF LEAD SINGERS VOICE & THE GUITAR TONES. ALSO, "ALONE & STRANDED ON TOBACCO ROAD" & "MY WICKED WAYS" ARE GOOD LINES-THIS SONG MOVES NICELY AND HAS NO DEAD SPOTS. Stray Cats meets the Smiths
This track starts off with a cool swampy feel, but then busts out in a pretty wicked jam. The rhythm section is tight & loose at the same time (good pocket drummer!). I also really like the sing/speak thing the singer has going on. Very cool, understated but ripping guitar solo too. Interview of Common Thrill by Overplay.com
[+ Show ]
Who are COMMON THRILL and how would you describe your music? Neil: Common Thrill is a 5 mem...Who are COMMON THRILL and how would you describe your music?
Neil: Common Thrill is a 5 member rock band from Boston, MA, U.S.A. The band was started by myself, Neil Bowman, and the singer, John Courduvelis, in 2001. Currently, the other members include Rich DeCaprio on guitars, keys, samples, Brian Furlong on guitars, and backing vocals, and Mark Kelley on bass. I'm the drummer. Our music is spacey, beautiful, passionate and rocking.
John: There are heavy guitar layerings and countermelodies, ala Radiohead, and I sort of croon over the songs in a voice that recalls Bryan Ferry, Jeff Buckley, and Muse. I also love Jim Morrison's growl and poetic spoken style as well, so sometimes I employ that.
When were you formed and were you in other bands before?
Neil: We formed in 2001 when John answered my ad in the Boston Phoenix. I loved his voice and style and we built from there.
John: I was briefly in the band Braindance but was mostly writing my own songs with an engineer named Jere Faisen. But I wanted a band that could play my songs and that understood them. Rich was the David Gilmour part in a Pink Floyd tribute band, Eclipse. Brian has led his own band for a few years, singing lead as well, and Mark is a Berklee student who has played with several bands and even toured the U.S. We also wrote much material with Eric Downing, a great singer/guitarist who was in a U2 tribute band called One Tree Hill, as Bono. And our bassist before Mark joined was Dr. William Cohn, a famous heart surgeon who worked as one of the top cardiothorasic surgeons at B'nai Brith Hospital in Boston! He's since had to leave us and move to Texas to head one of their hospital departments. Quite a bizarre line-up for sure!
What would you say would be COMMON THRILL biggest achievement so far?
Rich: By far, working with Radiohead's producer, Jim Warren. He flew over to the U.S. after finishing up as FOH (front of house) sound engineer on their Hail to the Thief tour, just to work with us! That was in March of this year. The fact that he even gave us the time of day still boggles our minds. But he brought that brilliant, anything-goes Radiohead sound and attitude to our music.
Brian: And two of our tunes are doing great on Garageband.com. "Whiskey Glow" is number 25 on their Rock charts as we speak. That's out of 1,400 songs worldwide.
It looks like it's starting to do well on Overplay, in the Top 10!
What are your aims for the future?
John: To expand our audience even more, keep gigging and getting tighter, hopefully selling some of these CD's and getting some airplay and label attention. Actually, we've been solicited by a major major label already, and we're not even sure how they came across us. We assume it's because of "Whiskey Glow" charting so high on Garageband.com. It became a Song of the Day the first week we posted it. But, we'll proceed cautiously.
Neil: Jesus, it sounds like we're boasting a lot! We're not, we're more stunned and speechless about some of this stuff than anything. You know how it is, when you wish for stuff it never happens!
Your favourite music album/influences?
John: The first Doors album. Jeff Buckley, Bono, Jimmy Gnecco.
Rich: Pink Floyd - Meddle. Radiohead, David Gilmour. I'm a big Jonny Greenwood tech-head.
Mark: Rich here got to play on Jonny Greenwood's guitar on our CD! The engineer, Matthew Ellard, had bought the guitar years ago from Jonny, and when he found out Jim Warren was producing it, he got the guitar out and asked Rich if he wanted to pay it on 'Whiskey Glow'. So if it sounds a LOT like Jonny, it's because it was his guitar and Jim Warren, Jonny's soundman, producing us! Well, I'd really have to say Radiohead "OK Computer" as my favorite. Everyone is my influence.
Brian: Jeff Buckley - Grace. David Gilmour, Jimmy Page.
Neil: U2 - The Unforgettable Fire. Radiohead, XTC, Roxy Music, Buckley, U2, tons of them. Interpol and Coldplay more recently.
Last album you bought?
John: Shawn Mullins - Beneath the Velvet Sun.
Rich: Radiohead - Comlag.
Mark: Trixie and the Merchgirls - Dazzle and Flash.
Brian: Maroon 5 - Songs About Jane.
Neil: The Libertines - Up the Bracket.
Favourite all-time film and book and why?
John: "Betty Blue", and 'Grendel'. Sublime, both are magical.
Rich: Radiohead's "Meeting People Is Easy". I could watch that a million times. I probably have. Book would be "Where the Red Fern Grows".
Mark: "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", and the book would be "Trout Fishing in America" by Richard Brodigan.
Brian: "Donnie Darko", and "Ghost Rider" by Neil Peart. 'Ghost Rider' because it's fascinating and strikes a chord in me about how to deal with loss and getting back on track. And "Donnie" just because it blurs the line and there's no film like it.
Neil: I don't have a favorite book. I just finished "Live from New York", about the history and cast of Saturday Night Live. It covers from day one to the present dramatically unfunny cast. Fascinating to me. Everybody hates Janeane Garofalo, Nora Dunn, Chevy Chase and NBC President Don Ohlmeyer. And Jon Lovitz comes across as a bitter whiner. Anyway, for films, I loved "Local Hero". Just a great, transcendent and totally magical film. Every once in a while a song or a movie or a book will just hit you and you forget about the cast, players or writers and you just get absorbed in the story.
John: That's what we're trying to do with our music. All those bands we mentioned before that we're influenced by have done that with us. Moved us beyond critique and we entered their world and were forever touched by them.
Mark: Few bands do that, or can sustain their magic beyond a album, or even a song or two.
Neil: That's what we want to do, sure. Work hard and create music we can get lost in, and hopefully we'll snag a few suckers with us.
Have you had any embarrassing moments on stage?
Rich: When we played the Luna Lounge in NYC in June, our first big NYC gig, they turned the AC on and the cold air blew right down on my rig. When we took the stage we start with a droning synth for a few seconds and I start the tune with a soft, circular guitar arpeggiation. Well, I started playing and the guitar was completely out of tune! So, I had to duck down to my tuner and let the synth drone on as I tuned every string of my guitar, which the audience heard was as loud as the synth. I don't know why the soundman didn't lower my guitar until I totally tuned it. It sucked! But we burned the rest of the night, anyway!
Brian: Once in my old band, I was singing lead and some drunk guy comes up to the stage in front of me and takes his pants down and starts dancing! My buddies were in the audience howling at me and making sure everyone was watching and laughing.
Mark: Once I was so exhausted I blacked out in the middle of a gig. I just kind of fell back on my rig. It was only a few seconds but people did notice.
Neil: Mine usually involve me knocking over my top-heavy tom stand in the middle of a song, and I'm trying to catch it without it falling over with sticks in my hands. That, or tripping over the cymbal stand legs.
John: Once I was singing on stage and in the middle of the song I forgot the lyrics, it was so obvious. So I just made them up off the top of my head, and those were actually better than the lyrics I had! So, during the break I ran over, grabbed a pen and scribbled the lyrics down on a wet napkin so I wouldn't forget them.
Will we see you gigging in the future or new recordings?
Rich: We definitely have more writing to do. We have a tune with an Otis Redding sample in it called 'Soul' and another one called 'Breathe' that we need to record.
Neil: I like the one we called 'Buried'. It's got a Page-worthy guitar riff, and a slow, sexy rhythm.
John: We'd love to work with Jim Warren again. I think it'll happen. We've been working with Anthony J. Resta (Duran Duran, Elton John, Hole, Collective Soul). He likes us and offered to mix a few tunes for free! He's a great producer.
If you could cover any song what would it be and why?
Brian: 'The Rain Song' by Zeppelin.
John: Ooohh, that's good one! I was thinking of 'Since I Been Loving You'.
Neil: John is fearless. He'll sing anything! And he'll pull it off too. We're doing 'Dream Brother' by Jeff Buckley now. It's right up our alley.
Mark: Yeah, I literally didn't know the song, but Neil played it on his CD car stereo before a rehearsal and we pretty much nailed it.
Rich: "How to Disappear Completely", or 'Paranoid Android', by Radiohead. It would take balls to cover either of them! We can do them, we already do 'Karma Police' and 'Lucky'.
Neil: I'd love to do "PDA" by Interpol.
Mark: "Sailing" by Christopher Cross.
>Favourite chord?
Rich: E minor.
Brian: D minor.
John: Eb.
Mark: E minor.
Neil: C major. It's the only one I can play on the piano!
What treats and goodies would you like backstage before a gig?
Rich (adopting Nigel Tufnel accent): Miniature bread. You've got to have it just right, or it's a complete catastrophe!
Brian: Blue M&M's.
Neil: A Meyers and Coke, no lime necessary.
Mark: Free food would be nice.
John: Black M&M's.
Are there any bands/artists on overplay that have impressed you?
Rich: I liked the .Firefly song, Phobia. Is there supposed to be a . before Firefly or is that a typo?
Mark: Yeah, I think we all liked that one. And I just like the band name, Bulletproof Moose!
John: The Battles of Winter song is great. I forgot the song title, but it was really great!
Have you a piece of advice/tip you could give to an unsigned band?
Neil: It's really easy to be unsigned. There's very little advice that needs to be given, really.
John: Smartass!!! I would say just love the tunes. Write freely and to the best of your ability, and you can't go wrong. In the end, that's what you're selling, the music. So, you have to love it and love playing the same songs hundreds of times! And it helps if you can respect each other and be friends.
Mark: Yes, you really have to like being around each other because if you're going to ever get anywhere, you'll have to spend endless hours together.
Neil: Yeah, get some songs you all really dig and play them EVERYWHERE! Get your friends into them and to support you, come to your gigs.
Rich: Play out. And don't you eat that yellow snow.
What question would you have liked to be asked? What is the answer to the question?

"Yes, please."
