Biography

Greasy twang, driving rhythms, a sense of melody and brevity contribute to a sound that draws on influences from the entirety of rock and roll’s storied history. This is The Bosch, a New York City quartet who sounds something like what might happen “if Brian Wilson, Dick Dale, and Joey Ramone stayed up all night taking speed pills and Ritalin.”

With the release of the new EP, Hurry Up, the band plans to introduce more listeners to their high-tempo, high-volume melodic pop music. Matt Harrison (guitar/ vocals/spreadsheets) and Holt Richardson (drums/vocals/firearms) trace their musical collaborations back to high school days. Joined by Andrew Raff (saxophone/keyboards/contracts) and Valerie Sauve (bass/vocals/puppies), The Bosch sound like a raucous mix of The Clash, The Violent Femmes and Phil Spector with a side of Springsteen and a dash of Man... Or Astroman.

The band’s previous album, Buy One, Get One, enjoyed spins at hundreds of college radio stations, debuted at #21 on the FMQB Specialty FM Alternative Charts in December 2005, and was featured on XM Radio’s RADAR Report and Unsigned at WOXY.com. The Bosch’s music has also been heard in independent films, the soundtrack of MTV reality programs, on video games and in national advertising campaigns for Volkswagen and Burger King.

After Hurry Up proves to have similar impact, The Bosch are confident that they will shortly be within striking distance of that ultimate rock star fantasy: the chance to hunt whales in a hovercraft.

The resulting album would bear a striking resemblance to The Bosch’s latest album, Buy One Get One. The Bosch play an upbeat style of rock that combines the colorful production values of Beach Boys with surf rock energy and punk rock grit. Fast and focused, the album drives ahead at full speed, ripping through nine songs in just twenty-five minutes. The band plays so fast that tracks like ‘The Movie Director’ and ‘Napoleon Invades Russia’ are over almost before they start. The Bosch slow down long enough to enjoy the scenery on ‘Teenage Symphony’, the best and best produced song on Buy One Get One. Starting off with rolling drums, a Phil Spector wall of sound is built brick by brick, adding synthesizers, saxophones, and even sleigh bells to thicken up the sound until the song becomes a full-blown symphony. Just when it seems you’ve got The Bosch figured out, they fire off a song that defies expectation, making their album that much more rewarding in the process.

  NINE whole tracks on it! Pretty damn good stuff though. Think Violent Femmes with a sprinkling of
  Ramones topping and maybe even add a dash of Devo sauce with Radio Birdman pudding. Maybe you'd like some Iggy and The Stooges biscuits to round things
  off? This is marvellous - someone sign these guys now!

Their album art says everything - a cleaning product bearing the band’s name with a snub nosed pistol for a nozzle. The Bosch is clean and wants to blow you away.

Buy One Get One is an enjoyable set of lo-fi, upbeat party Rock. The band describe themselves as “what you might get if The White Stripes, The Violent Femmes, and Phil Spector recorded the soundtrack to a Quentin Tarantino movie.” The Femmes comparison might come from singer/guitarist Matthew Harrison’s occasional vocal resemblance to the great Gordon Gano. Buy One Get One kicks off with the one-two punch of “Come On Phillie” and “The Movie Director.” I’m not sure if “Come On Phillie” is aimed at Jimmy Rollins, Bobby Abreu or perhaps none of the members of my favorite baseball team. And “The Movie Director” features some great keyboard flourishes in the background. Songs like “Matching Girlfriend” are almost reminiscent of the nutty, nutty ska feel of Madness. Produced by Duane Lundy, Buy One Get One is a cool hard rock experience. Blasting out of the gates with the harsh and catchy “Come On Phillie,” these guys provide nine intense garage rockers played with gusto and style. The band consists of Brett Beyer, Andrew Raff, Matthew Harrison, and Holt Richardson. These guys write great songs and they play like they mean it. Buy One Get One is proof positive that The Bosch is a band to watch. Classy tracks include “Metronome,” “Back to the Laboratory,” and “Tell the Doctor.” (Rating: 5+)

The latter part of that statement puzzles me, as Buy One, Get One, from its non-descript album cover and song titles, is the ultimate feel-good record: Humorous, often silly lyrics, smart horn arrangements, and thoughtful songwriting that’s neither trite nor too vintage for modern ears, and isn’t condescending–it’s fun.

  With the recent passing of the great Link Wray it’s good to see bands still relying on a riff heavy ...With the recent passing of the great Link Wray it’s good to see bands still relying on a riff heavy sound unafraid to bring in horns and anything else they feel will add to the stew. There’s also something about the Violent Femmes about these tracks, especially the call and response of ‘Back to the Laboratory’ as well as elements of the Cramps - you may have spotted that in ‘Zombie Killer,’ whilst ‘The Movie Director’ has a kind of harsh propulsion that reminded me of Big Chief. With the horn led party anthems ‘Matching Girlfriend’ and the brighter poppier sound of ‘Teenage Symphony’ you have the perfect 25 minutes to soundtrack the time it takes for frat party boys to get so drunk they don’t know what they are listening to.

  Think New York Dolls meets Hoodoo Gurus with flashes of Jim Carroll, Lou Reed, the White Stripes, Vi...Think New York Dolls meets Hoodoo Gurus with flashes of Jim Carroll, Lou Reed, the White Stripes, Violent Femmes and Sha Na Na plus many more I can’t put my finger on at the moment. Extremely infectious rock n’ roll with no noticeable filler. The vocals sound a lot like the Gurus stuff. Hell, this is another one of those albums that sounds like something you’ve owned for years. You could play this and the Dead Boys side by side and neither would sound out of place. Very highly recommended!
