Biography
In the song writing workshop we write, rehearse and record an original song, which is then posted online for students to share with friends. We can write on a specific theme or curriculum topic. This workshop is for tweens and teens. We create a safe and fun environment for creativity.
Instrumentation
Kathy Moser leads the workshop, but the participants are completely involved in a hands-on way in all aspects of writing, rehearsing and recording.

Dear Colleagues,
Kathy Moser presented a song writing program for teens at the Washington Twp. Public Library as part of our Teen Summer Reading Program. Our teens were introduced to the process of creating songs and they greatly enjoyed this program.
A large portion of Kathy's workshop focuses on the use of words and language as she facilitates teens in the transition from individual words to related lyrics and finally to a complete song. Her emphasis on language and word use makes this workshop very relevant to libraries.
Kathy Moser also has a natural ability in working with young people. She welcomes ideas from all of the participants and encourages teens to share their opinions. Her workshop is well organized while at the same time providing a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
Kathy Moser is a talented musician who fosters young people's creativity. I recommend her workshops as a strong asset to youth library programming.
Sincerely, Elissa Rizzo, Young Adult Librarian, Washington Twp, NJ -

All but one of the teens involved were teens I haven't seen in the building before. Kathy is a fantastic presenter, and she lead the teens into creating a cool song. It was a totally collaborative experience, with teens playing guitar, writing lyrics, singing, producing, recording, and Kathy as muse, bandleader, wrangler, teacher, and conspirator. All in all, the program was a joy to watch happen. I would love to have Kathy back to do another workshop.” -- Joshua J. Carlson, Teen Librarian

To Whom it May Concern:
I highly recommend Kathy Moser, singer and songerwriter, for any children's event, large or small. She has tremendous respect for children and has a good rapport with them. Her new show, involving the kids helping her to write a story, is lots of fun. She allows for the silliness to come out as well as keeping control of the story. Kathy will have great appeal to elementary school aged kids as well as teens. I just wish that there were more of her! More songs, more stories, more fun!
Sincerely, Susan Keenan

To Whom It May Concern,
Ms. Moser worked with Hopatcong High School and Middle School students this past school year in which she provided her program called "Creative Choices." She conducted assemblies as well as provided a ten week song writing residency. Ms Moser was also a guest speaker in numerous High School English classes. She has continuously delivered a very powerful message to her audience through music and interactive discussion in which the students were very receptive and quite engaged.
Ms. Moser has been extremely flexible and able to quickly adjust to the school's last minute decisions as well as scheduling changes. She has quickly adapted to the different school setting such as large assemblies and small sized classrooms. She has worked well with both high school and middle school grade levels, as well as all levels of faculty and staff.
Ms. Moser was punctual, extremely reliable, highly competent and left a lasting positive impression with many students with whom she worked. I would recommend her program to any school considering it.

To Whom It May Concern,
This letter comes to you regarding Kathy Moser, musician extraordinaire.
Kathy has been conducting music classes at the Sussex County Youth Shelter since December 2005. At the shelter, Kathy's classes have included a variety of activities including songwriting, guitar lessons and CD design through computer graphics programs.
The Sussex County Youth Shelter is designed to be a temporary placement for children in crisis, and we therefore have a population that is transient. This can create an obstacle for many outsiders, as they are never quite sure what to expect walking through our doors each day. Ms. Moser has consistently been able to quickly adjust ad connect with each resident she has come in contact with at the shelter. Her enthusiasm is contagious with even the most resistant resident, and she is quickly able to build a positive rapport with the group. Her insight into the dynamics of each different group, as well as each individual resident, is quite extraordinary.
Kathy Moser is an asset to any program, as she is able to connect with different populations in a unique way. She empowers her participants through singing, songwriting, creative artwork and the production of music. It is without hesitation that I would recommend her to work with children and adolescents in any capacity. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact me.
Sincerely, Meredith Reilly,

Dear Kathy,
I am writing to thank you for the wonderful songwriting workshop you gave here on September 18, 2008. I was so impressed with your ability to connect to the teenagers who participated. It was clear from the beginning that you were able to provide an arena for creativity that was filled with trust. What a talent you have for working with teens!
The song the participants wrote, produced and recorded with you is truly amazing. We are all amazed that it was created in so little time. I've received nothing but raves about your work. We certainly look forward to having you return to present your workshop in the future!
Thanks again!
Best regards, Carrie Thompson, Teen Programs Coordinator -

An award-winning musician and a group of mostly teens gathered at East Brunswick Public Library recently, transforming Meeting Room 3 into their own personal recording studio.
A fender amp and a microphone were connected to Kathy Moser's MacBook through an M-Audio interface, and on a table on the left side of the room was a guitar she painted herself.
Moser, a touring singer-songwriter and self-described "social artist," told the group never to do that to their guitars since the paint changes the instrument's acoustics.
"Those are some pimped-out strings," said Ian Pulz of Cranbury, seemingly willing to forgive the guitar's diminished sound quality given its brightly colored neck and body.
With Moser's help, the group of seven hoped to write and record a song that evening, complete with instrumentals, percussion and vocals.
They began by brainstorming on some lyrics. Moser suggested a few themes, and the group took to a large sheet of construction paper with some markers and starting working.
Meanwhile, Jacob Katz of East Brunswick began creating a guitar part, while Emily Gordanier, also of East Brunswick, sat down at the MacBook and prepared to record the composition.
"Songs are kind of like butterflies," Moser said as the lyricists completed the words for the first verse and Katz had come up with a guitar part. "They're flying by. What you want to do is pin them down and keep them."
On that cue, the group moved over to the microphone and practiced what they had written together a few times before attempting to record.
"Play time," said Gordanier, eager to get the song into the computer where a drum beat could be added digitally.
After a few takes, the first verse and the chorus were done, and the group began coming up with ideas for the next part.
Katz played a melody similar to the first verse, but it was in double-time and paced more frantically.
"That sounds like anxiety," said Jared Greenspan of East Brunswick.
Soon, everyone was excitedly pitching different directions they wanted to take the song, but Moser was forced to remind them that they were on a schedule.
"I would love to work with you guys for like 19 hours because that would be so much fun," she said. "But I'm leaving at 8:30."
By around 8 p.m., they group was ready to record the final product, which Moser would post online the following day after it had been mixed and edited.
Gordanier wound up contributing lead vocals to the chorus, while singing duties on the verses were split evenly between everyone else.
Once everything was completed, Moser handed everyone a blue card and said it was their "Creative License."
The card read: "This license is issued to you for use in joyful, creative explorimenting (explore/experiment) of language and art of all kinds. Do not use for standardized tests, science papers, or math class!"
