Biography
The newest discovery in the Swiss music scene certainly lives up to her name. A heart-warming voice and songs which make you want to snuggle up. Priska Zemp is Heidi Happy and Heidi Happy is currently the name on everyone’s lips. The small Swiss music world didn’t fail to notice that this was someone endowed with a huge amount of charm and talent. She was obviously bestowed the latter at birth. «At home there was always someone singing. My passion for music came quite automatically», she recalls.
During the past few years this passion led her towards different bands with which she also released CDs and which eventually led to solo performances. Three years ago she was asked by friends to give a concert and it was this that got the ball rolling. «I wanted to see if I could also do it on my own. And it worked. But actually I only kept going because I was constantly being asked to give concerts». Out of Priska Zemp came Heidi Happy, a name which was hastily invented for the flyers before her stage debut.
In April 2005 she thus started her solo career as Heidi Happy. Just two years later her debut album was released by the domestic indie label “Little Jig Records”. And nowadays she’s smack bang in the middle of her first career high point.
Heidi Happy’s adaptable voice enables us to perceive and sense not only Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell but also Norah Jones. However, her music seems to be rooted more in the direction of indie folk with a jazz influence. In between she indulges in a musical foray to Africa or in country music. Heidi Happy normally uses her stylistic devices sparingly – but whoever dares to uses a tuba or a polyphonic flute concerto as the musical highlight or to uplift a song, may already call herself a pioneer.
With a cabaret-like flair to her voice and looking extremely picturesque she describes her emotional life from “boring” to “hold your horses”, she seems at the same time to be waiting for Mr. Right, whom perhaps she already found, as revealed in the song “Back Together”. Her voice conveys it all splendidly and Priska Zemp possesses a song-writing talent of world calibre. The songs reveal a perfect flair for atmosphere, style and class.
Heidi’s heart knows inside-out everything that she sings about. These are stories which made her sad or happy, that made her scream, cry or even vomit. When she sings these stories, you have the feeling that her heart might soon fall out her mouth. It doesn’t matter if you’ve almost had enough of this singer-songwriter trend, or if you think the turquoise of her guitar doesn’t match her outfit; the songs, her voice, the combination of beautiful melodies and unscrupulously personal lyrics make your heart dance in a different world.
Heidi Happy is the Swiss answer to all singing women out there. We now have a singer/songwriter of world calibre.
