Artist Information

Biography

Since announcing his arrival with 2001's Tiger Pop, indie-pop troubadour John Brodeur has released a series of critically praised solo LPs, fronted beloved power-pop two bands (the Suggestions and Maggie Mayday), and toured the nation extensively as both a solo artist and as a member of bands like the Morning After Girls, Soren Well, and Hector on Stilts. Following a successful campaign to fund a reissue/re-recording of his debut LP, Brodeur again teamed with Pledge Music to bring his latest collection, Little Hopes, to life. (The album will be released by Mr. Duck/Sojourn Records on August 13.) His first album of new material in four years finds the performer leaping effortlessly from quirky bedroom pop to epic guitar rock, and from matters of the heart to battles of the soul. Produced and performed almost entirely by Brodeur himself, with additional mixing and mastering by Grammy-winning engineer Michael Tudor (Duncan Sheik, the Strokes), Little Hopes is a confident, tuneful recording that brims with personality -- the most honest representation to date of John Brodeur as an artist.

“One of the best guitar pop albums of the current millennium.” (Pittsburgh Daily News, on Tiger Pop)

“In an age of throwaway pop, these recordings immediately stand out like a sore thumb.” (LMNOP, on Tiger Pop Ten)

“Brodeur is able to conjure up a different mood of ’70s radio with each pop concoction. . . . Pop records like this may be scarce, but when they are of this caliber, they won’t remain under the radar for long.” (Performing Songwriter, on Tiger Pop)

“Fierce and rough yet beautiful and memorable, this is an outstanding album.” (Ink 19, on Tiger Pop)

“The wistfulness of his compositions have a stoic sentimentalism that may well catapult Mr. Brodeur into the sort of alt-rock pinup status that [Lou] Barlow once enjoyed.” (PopMatters)

“Brodeur is a gifted songwriter who has the rare ability to craft catchy pop hooks without relying on stock pop-song structures while he does it.” (J Eric. Smith, Metroland)

“Power pop at its finest . . . serious nods to Material Issue and the Posies.” (Performing Songwriter, on Mix Tape)

“Brodeur deadpans his urban pop constructions with the same arrogance as Runt-era Todd Rundgren, pulling off arrangement twists that keep his tunes floating a safe distance above the drainage ditch of pop icon body-snatching.” (Amplifier, on Mix Tape)

“Get Through is a delicately crafted wake up call. . . . This is a brilliant album.” (Powerpopaholic)

“Get Through is a wonderfully varied collection of songs that range through rock, grunge and alternative styles without ever losing a distinctive pop appeal. Brodeur writes intelligently, conveying thoughts and stories in a personal style that make the listener feel a part of the show.” (Wildy’s World)
