Artist Information

Biography

Leveleve (2009) is the first EP of the brazilian rocklounge duo ai_laika (ruivo - keys/progs/production - and sub - voice/vibes/fx). Meaning something untranslatable, nearly echolalic as “reallyreallylight”, the collection of songs in portuguese and english wander through bird-like soundscapes and bossarock moanings.

Beyond plain expressions such as Ah, o amor ("Aw, Love..."), Hit de verão ("Summer Hit") or the title song leveleve, there's the simple will of making light music, music for fun, for faded red couches smattered by smooth voices, for sub's old fashioned batian (japanese grandma) who taught her how to eat rice and cucumbers happily on holidays. All this mixed with a bit of fluffy rock too, on songs like Bewitched, or simply strange coffee desires, as happens on Tatata theme.

The different scenic references of the band are partially due to sub’s japanese-italian origin. Ailaika vocalist was born in Recife, one of the most ancient brazilian cities, and raised in São Paulo. The mixture of tradition, urbanity and incompleteness appear on her live, anti-diva performance - she privileges ethereal voice effects, soft whispers and spontaneous bursts.

Ruivo, who also signs the production and arrangements of the newborn album, brings along his long-term playing experience with many brazilian bands, ranging from pop to blues and nu-jazz.

The live set features songs from the EP interwoven with improvised or soundtrack atmospheres, topped by sub's soft voice and ruivo’s live progs.

:: LAIKALAB

Besides the first album, ailaika also launched the laikalab project in 2009, a partnership with Pierro, a talented brazilian graphic artist. The main purpose is to use the triad art-communication-music in order to generate transitory media pills' experiences, such as the "simple as that" series of animations - the #zero is a cartoon free adaptation of the brothers Coen movie, No country for old men (so far, available only in a portuguese version - to watch it, please try our sonic video link or the links below). No reinventing-the-wheel or ruling-the-world intentions here: we really want to have some practical researching fun. That's related to our belief that making music (or text, or video, or gigs alone) is a dying reality: the future is pure transitory and multimedia experiences.
