Biography

John Friday is a Trop Rock singer/songwriter originally from Maryland, now living in Florida. John takes his audience on a musical journey “down to the islands,” with a wide variety of rock, folk, country, reggae, Americana, and island styles.
John Friday covers popular songs from every decade of the pop and rock era. From the crooners of the 40s and rock ‘n’ roll of the 50s, from the British Invasion bands of the 60s to the singer-songwriters of the 70s, and from the “hair pop” of the 80s to the alt-rock legends of today, John plays the songs you know and love, as well as gems from the “ ‘B-side’ of the album” that will bring back memories of the era. John can tailor his show to any audience or venue.
More than just a cover artist, John Friday writes original music in several styles, “some funny, some serious, always entertaining.” John's performances garnered a place in the finals of the Landshark Lager Battle of the Bands in 2009 (John was the only solo artist, and the only Trop Rock artist, in the finals). His powerful songwriting skills have earned Honorable Mention in the American Songwriter Lyrics Contest; and Top 3 placement in the Great Lakes and Dallas Songwriting Contests.

  What do you get when you mix island sounds, country, rock & roll, reggae, folk, and a healthy dose o...What do you get when you mix island sounds, country, rock & roll, reggae, folk, and a healthy dose of steel pan and pour it over ice served in a coconut shell?
  Trop Rock, according to John Friday, is an eclectic mix of music, which has been described as Buffetesque. Trop Rock make you want to drink something clorful with an umbrella in it, sit on the beach with your feet in the warm sand, and just have a good time.
  James White, a regular on Margaritaville Radio said: "Trop Rock is a rhythm, it's a sound, and it's bound to be fun."
  And fun is just what John Friday aims for.
  He first picked up a guitar at age 13 with the intention of impressing the ladies. Thirty years later, after a career in the Army, a fulfilling stint as a teacher at an alternative school and various other odd jobs, Friday is back with his guitar for gigs at the Twisted Conch and the Cape Coral Farmers Market
  "I packed away my guitar when I went into the Army," Friday said. "I never thought the Army would be a career--I just needed a way to provide for my family. But I enlisted and then reinlisted, and then reinlisted again. I was in the Army for 13 years before I was medically discharged after breaking my back for the second time."
  Friday moved to Cape Coral in May of 2008 and hasn't regretted a day. His fans are pretty excited that Friday has returned to music full time.
  "I just love his sound. I don't know what it is called, but he is really good," said Jason Evans of Cape Coral. "John is one of my favorite parts of the Farmers Market. I really enjoy the atmosphere when he is here playing."
  Friday plays a few covers, but he writes a lot of his own songs.
  "Of course, my music is inspired by people like Jimmy Buffett, Bob Marley, The Eagles, Jim Morris and John Denver," friday said. "I want to play a lot of feel-good music. I want the people that are out in my audience to smile and dance when they hear me play. I want them to slip away into island time."

A typical set includes several original songs as well as covers of artists such as Jimmy Buffett, Jerry Jeff Walker, Todd Snider, Kenny Chesney, The Eagles, Neil Young, Jack Johnson, etc. A three-hour show typically includes 3 50-minute sets of 10-14 songs.
