Biography

New York/Connnecticut trio Planeside are torchbearers for meat-and-potatoes 1990s alternative rock, which might seem a bit prematurely retro until you consider the guys have been at it for 10 years. That's an impressive run for a band on the local club scene, where original bands tend to fizzle out and splinter after a couple years. Perhaps Planeside's longevity has something to do with their road-warrior nature. Rather than stew in their own juices in the same five or six area clubs, they do laps around the eastern U.S. Or perhaps it has something to do with the fact that there's something evergreen and appealing in their gutsy riffs and throaty but melodic singing. In any case, Planeside has outlasted countless upstart bands to become a regional institution. - Fairfield Weekly 2.5.10

NEW ALBUM: SAME OLD SONGS & CHANTS TO BE RELEASED ON VINYL JUNE 2011. Follow up record for Fall is already being recorded!

The long version:
While most teenagers were dreaming about being in a band, Craig Sala (drums) and Ken Hirasaki (bass) were living it as members of Joni's Butterfly. They found themselves on tour with John Entwistle of The Who, playing to sold out venues beyond their wildest dreams. Joni's Butterfly succumbed to egos and creative differences, but the road tested rhythm section stuck together, and moved forward. (They Currently have logged in over 1000 shows together!)

Starting over as 3-piece with their former roadie Dave Harris (vocals & guitar), their chemistry was instant. Self professed to be fueled by caffeine & cigarettes this is a band dedicated to putting themselves out on a limb. No strangers to hard work and foul play, this trio has been sweating it in the trenches and living on BBQ out of their van for years. Playing dives, theaters and festivals they’ve swapped spit with the likes of Queens of the Stone Age, Steve Miller Band, Army of Anyone (DeLeo Bros. from Stone Temple Pilots and Richard Patrick of FILTER), Gilby Clarke (Guns n Roses/Supernova), Chevelle, Helmet, Pennywise, The Used, Glenn Tilbrook of SQUEEZE, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Brant Bjork & Bros., D.R.I., Lit, Bayside, Finger 11, Longwave, Hawthorne Heights, Death From Above 1979, Bad Wizard, Robbers on High St., Burning Brides, SUM 41, Pearl (Meatlof's daughter w/Scott Ian on Anthrax & members of the Rollins band), the Strokes and many more...

The essential formula -- a manic combustion of good old American rock n' roll and an underlying hip hugging groove, played with punk ferocity that will leave the hair standing on the back of your ass! The band's raw sound is turbulent yet sleek, and seems to reflect every aspect of Americana they've collided with amidst their journeys…even if they can't remember them.

Planeside hit the ground running and burned through 2000 copies of their first three song demo and went on to release the 7" single, "Split Ring," a self-titled EP, and their 1st full-length album "For Motion Discomfort". In 2006, their sophomore full length disc, MILK, produced by Grammy Award winner John Seymour (Bouncing Souls, Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Grammy for Santana's Supernatural) was released on Exotic Recordings. The surface-level taboo of "Aunt Polly's Dream" definitely turned some heads, as well the video for "2 Messages". It was then, that ESPN featured music from Planeside’s catalog in their video games of Major League Baseball 2K5 ("Most anticipated sports game of 2005") & National Hockey League 2K6 video games. "REDHANDED" (also on MILK) is featured on DOG the Bounty Hunter Episode #128. (First airing on March 11, 2009) & "MY SWEET REVENGE" on Double Episode #136-137 (First airing on June 17, 2009).

The band has always toured heavily and was named a "Top 10 band to watch" by FLY Magazine in Harrisburg, PA. and voted "BEST HARD ROCK BAND" in 2004, 2005 & 2006 by the Fairfield County Weekly, CT.

In March, 2008 - Planeside released ‘Under the Circumstances, It’s Not Such a Bad Idea...”. A fine collection of 6 songs that you’ll be singing along to with all of your little hearts! Produced, recorded and mixed by Jonathan Wyman, the new EP is a showcase for the band’s continuing effort at honing and developing their craft. The songs are tighter and the hooks are stronger than they’ve ever been. There is also a guest appearance by Rustic Overtones/Paranoid Social Club vocalist, Dave Gutter. Songs from the EP also be appeared on compilations from ALTERCATION Records as well as Snoop Dogg's affiliate FMI RECORDS.

On Jan. 7, 2010 - "My Sweet Revenge" was hand chosen and spun by Matt Pinfield on 101.9 WRXP in New York City. That evening PLANESIDE performed at Webster Hall in NYC. The following night they played at Toads Place in New Haven, CT.

In May of 2010, Planeside embarked on a 5 date string of East coast dates opening for PEARL (Daughter of Meatloaf). These dates featured Pearl's Husband Scott Ian of Anthrax on Guitar and members of the Rollins band.

That July, The Fairfield Weekly Advocate in CT. voted Planeside Best Band for the first time & Best Hard Rock Band for the Fourth time.

Summer of 2011, will see the release of "Same Old Song & Chants" on GIG2 Records. This VINYL ONLY release, will be a full length of remixes, alternates & unreleased tracks. This will be followed up by a full length of new material that is currently being recorded.

Keep your eyes, ears and mouth open, as Planeside continues to hit the road through 2011.
