Sippin Saturdays: IreneB's Metamorphosis Begins

When I listen to a song, I really listen for what I like to call "the goosebump moments". This is when you hear a voice that is distinct, lyrics that take your emotions to another level and being able to get to know about the artist and how they set themselves apart from others. IreneB has these qualities and more and is the reason why I love keeping an ear to new sounds especially those that are independents who you know that they will make a strong impact in the industry.
This singer/songwriter hails from Barcelona and as she prepares to launch her first CD "Metamorphosis" in her new home, Orlando, she has already accomplished so much on her journey. Her journey began with a love of R&B which was cultivated as she studied music for 7 years and then put her knowledge into practice as she graced various stages. Not only has her single "Forgive Me Now" played online and in radio stations internationally, this marks the first English R&B CD that was created from a Spanish native and distributed worlwide! Being someone who used to do PR for digital artists, I really love how her music has been included with quite a few podcasts!
The single is powerful not only due to IreneB's voice which reminded me of Tony Braxton and Christina Aguilera but her skills as a songwriter is evident as she sings asking for fogiveness in order to move forward. From the very first words, you're brought into the song and carried through with amazing melodies. IreneB's talent is undeniable; however, she knows how to pick a great team that is no stranger to working with the best of the best. Frankie Biggz has worked with such notables as Chrisina Aguilera, 50 Cent, Kanye West and much more! With his magical touch, I am excited to see where he will take IreneB. Available on iTunes this song has such a catchy beat and lyrics, that you will find yourself pressing repeat on your iPod. Also listen to the snippet (the button is right about the singers/songwriter's picture) that is available here on Kitten Lounge, then check out IreneB's Myspace page to stay in touch with where you can find her next and hopefully, we will be able to bring you news on where she will appear next!

Known for her soulful influenced vocals IreneB is often compared to her idols Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera and Toni Braxton just to name a few.
“Forgive Me Now”, the first single of the album, is making significant upward movement promising to hit of the fall. “The song is already being played in stations (both terrestrial and internet) all over the world” says Frankie Biggz, producer. Countries that have recently added the single include Japan, UK, Spain, South America, USA, China, Russia, Italy and Cyprus. “This track is gonna make it big” says DJ Spider (Cyprus), host of Unknown Allstarz Podcast.
“Forgive Me Now” talks about a woman who asks for forgiveness for her infidelity. “Songs of forgiveness are very common amongst males, so I wrote this from a female aspect”, says IreneB, “One just doesn’t expect it.”
Metamorphosis is the latest collaborative creation between IreneB and Grammy award winning producer Frankie Biggz who’s worked with artists such as Christina Aguilera, SWV, Eminen, 50 Cent and Kayne West.
In 2006 IreneB emerged to fame with the success of her first independent release entitled “Mi Realidad / My Reality” in her native Spain and was named one of the most independent podcasted artists in the world. The release of Metamorphosis will make IreneB the first Spaniard to release a full R&B album in English.
Metamorphosis usually proceeds in distinct stages such as this album will. IreneB will captivate your heart and soul with passion.

New Music Exclusive Spotlight

As the years progressed, IreneB grew fondly of soul music as she became familiar with such mega stars as Bobby Brown, Michael Jackson, Boyz II Men, Mariah Carey, and Whitney Houston; just to name a few. From this experience, IreneB was enthralled to pursue her own career as a singer/songwriter.
By the time IreneB turned eighteen, she began studying music at the Aula de Música Moderna y Jazz del Liceo; a place where she studied the art of music for seven years. Moreover, IreneB always kept her schedule full with both live performances and in the studio making music. Amazingly, IreneB has since then been fortunate and extremely blessed with eight years of touring in venues such as the Razzmatazz, Jazz Room and Vic Jazz Festival with an array of jazz, blues, and R&B music.
Please take a moment to enjoy this spotlight that Junior's Cave Online Magazine, JC Internet Radio, and The Southern Mix recently conducted with this mega superstar.
Members: IreneB (voice), James Smith (keyboards), Frankie Biggz (drums), James Johnston (guitar)

Isaac: Elaborate on who you are and your upbringing.
IreneB: I'm IreneB, the first Spaniard to release an English R&B album worldwide. I came from Barcelona, Spain to the US to make my dream come true. I'm a single child and my mom and dad are both psychoanalysts so I was brought up in the world of psychology.
Isaac: Was there any one musician that spoke to your heart so profoundly, you were inspired to do your own thing?
IreneB: I've always felt inspired by good artists, especially in the R&B genre, there are so many great artists. If I had to choose an artist, I would definitely choose Mariah Carey.
Isaac: Which singer/group would you say you would most like to do a duet with?
IreneB: There are so many groups and artists out there that I would love to do a duet with, but if I had to pick one I would say Mariah Carey.
Isaac: What singer/songwriter do you most connect with?
IreneB: Once again, I know I sound boring, Mariah Carey.
Isaac: Out of your entire song collection that you've written thus far, which song(s) would you say is/are the most personal/meaningful to you?
IreneB: Of all the songs in my album, "Metamorphosis" has a place in my heart. If I had to choose which one means the most to me, I would say "I Wanna Fly". The song talks about how I overcame the obstacles of being an R&B singer in Spain, a country not really known for that kind of music.
Isaac: Which singers/groups do you enjoy/like from some of today's music genres?
IreneB: I really love Alicia Keys' last album, "As I Am" and I respect the turn Rihanna's career has made. Isaac: What charities are you involved with or support?
IreneB: I'm actually gonna be performing in next year's AAURA (Aid 4 Autism); you can check it at http://aid4autism.info/. Last year I was performing in a concert
for Psoriasis children. I love to use my talent to help people.
Isaac: Have you (or would you ever consider) writing a song about any of today's particular world issues/problems? If so, what world issue would speak to you the most to write about?
IreneB: I haven't really gotten into talking about today's world issues, because "Metamorphosis" was written more from the personal side of life. I would love to write something more general in my next album, maybe about war, or about hope for finding a cure for aids or cancer.
Isaac: Why should people listen to your music?
IreneB: Why? Because it's pretty innovative R&B coming from a Spaniard, isn't it? The main thing is that people like it and feel related to my stories.
Isaac: What has been the greatest moment for you as an entertainer thus far in your career?
IreneB: Wow! So many, I feel so grateful for every moment that I've had thanks to music. But definitely the most important was meeting my producer Frankie Biggz because without him I wouldn't be here.
Isaac: How far into the creation of a song do you share any of it with anyone? Who would you play it for? Would it be a chorus, a verse and chorus, or a complete song?
IreneB: It depends on the song. I do write songs and also share the experience of writing with other songwriters; like I did with Frankie Biggz or Amy Hartwig. They helped me putting words to my ideas, since English is not really my main language.
Isaac: How much do you let others "mess around with" one of your new songs?
IreneB: Not much; I do accept suggestions, but I gotta admit I'm really really picky with my music.
Isaac: Do you have to be a tortured soul to be a singer-songwriter?
IreneB: Well, I think you need at least to know how to relate to tortured souls if you're not one of them…
Isaac: Do you prefer to write music from your own personal experience, life's issues, or a little of both (explain why)?
IreneB: A little of both, I've had so many experiences of myself, but not every song that I write is a personal experience. For example, "Forgive Me Now" is a song that Frankie and I wrote of a new idea we had, nobody has written before a song of a girl asking for forgiveness for cheating, is always from a male perspective.
Isaac: How long does it take you to process your emotions and turn them into songs?
IreneB: It really depends on the song and inspiration, I've written a complete song in an hour, but I've also taken months to complete one in other occasions.
Isaac: The best piece of advice you actually followed?
IreneB: "Don't ever give up. Never, never listen to anybody, when they try to discourage you; 'cause they do that, believe me!" by Mariah Carey in 1995. She's always been an inspiration to me and I've had people trying to tell me what I was trying to do was impossible, but I always believed in myself and my dream.
Isaac: Give Shutouts to your family and friends.
IreneB: I want to give a shout to my biggest fans, my family and friends in Spain. To my producer Frankie Biggz and to the CEO at Rama Music Carlos Valderrama. To all people that helped me in my journey: Cesar, Marilyn, Karen, Trey, etc. To all the radio stations and podcasts that played my songs.
Isaac: Last but certainly not least, what are you working on, now?
IreneB: I'm working on my stage presence and development and rehearsing for my live show. On the other hand we're already writing some songs for my second album.

Entrevista a IreneB (Spanish)
[+ Show ]

Her first single from her new record due out in February is “Forgive Me Now” and has already been added into heavy rotation in more than 100 countries worldwide. Its also landed the number 1 spot on the UK independent radio charts and stayed there for 10 weeks. Her first full length English album entitled Metamorphosis is due out February 3rd.
Metamorphosis
Metamorphosis is best described as a fusion of Jazz, Latin Jazz pop and rnb. Its soultry and passionate lyrics will have your heart at first listen.
Positive and uplifting lyrics stem from situations in her life that have inspired her writing in all her songs. She has written her album entirely in English, a first for Brazilian singer-songwriters. She has worked with Frankie Biggs, a powerhouse producer who has worked with: Christina Aguilera, 50 Cent, and Kanye West. She’s also hooked up with Trey Mills on “Are You the One for Me”, who’s also worked with Michael Jackson, Brian McKnight and Boyz II Men. With these producers on board this album can not be anything more than the epitome of sexy soulful sounds you’d expect to hear from such legends in the Rnb music industry.
Her lyrics are deeply personal and most reflective of her childhood and growing up. This is especially true of “I Wanna Fly”, which depicts a world where she’s overcoming the obstacles of singing neo-soul songs in her native Spain. When you put catchy rhythms, an island jazz sound and relatable lyrics together, you’ve got the perfect formula for number one songs.
Irene on the Road.
IreneB will be taking her band on a worldwide tour from the UK to Spain next month and hitting the United States in March. Sign up with her newsletter or check out her official page to keep up with this butterfly during her Metamorphosis.

IreneB, Guest Artist In Legendary Jazz Keyboard Player Jeff Lorber's Record

Last year when IreneB released her first record, Metamorphosis, beginning with the song 'I Wanna Fly', in which she used a part of 'Rain Dance', by Jeff Lorber, she couldn't have imagined that the song would've ended up inspiring this great jazz composer, considered one of the creators of fusion jazz.
In 2007, IreneB decided to leave Barcelona, her hometown, and move to Orlando (Florida, USA), to follow her dream of singing R&B. In little over a year, she became an independent music icon. Thanks to the help of her producer, Frankie Biggz (Latin Grammy winner), and Rama Music (her record label) she released her first album, Metamorphosis, that soon found its place on top of the indie R&B charts, and soon charmed the likes of jazz greats including Jeff Lorber.
''I Wanna Fly' is my favorite song out of Metamorphosis, because it's my most personal one -the singer admits-; so you can imagine my reaction when Jeff contacted me and said that he 'd love to add it to his new album: I couldn't believe it!'.
Even though this is the first time that IreneB is featured along side big jazz musicians, this genre is nothing new to her, she was part of a jazz band at a prestigious music school in Barcelona, L'Aula de Musica Moderna y Jazz (Modern Music & Jazz School). Also, she was fortunate enough to be the first R&B artist to perform in Jamboree, a very famous venue in Barcelona, often visited by jazz lovers and where artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Chet Backer and Tete Montoliu have performed in the past.
Jeff Lorber not only rerecorded 'I Wanna Fly' for his album, but also asked IreneB and her producer, Frankie Biggz, to create new melodies and lyrics around three more songs ('Water Sign', 'Curtains' & 'Sugar Free') recorded years before by Lorber at the start of his career.
'To be honest, we were a bit scared by the idea at the start, because it meant we had to create new concepts for songs that had already been hits before: Could we match Lorber's essence and yet, at the same time, include the 'IreneB vibe' without deceiving or confusing his fans?'- said Frankie Biggz, who wrote the new melodies, recorded and arranged IreneB's vocals. 'Of course, we couldn't let this opportunity go by, so as soon as we received the songs, we immediately started working on them. Just in case Jeff changed his mind!'
Once they finished the job, and while IreneB and Frankie Biggz where impatiently waiting for Jeff and producer, Bobby Colomby (The Jacksons, Jaco Pastorious, Tina Turner, etc.) verdict, Lorber & Colomby were enjoying the young musician's talents: 'Everytime we received one of the songs, it was like a present. As usual Jeff used great musicians on this album, but the addition of singer IreneB has made this an unforgettable record.' - confesses Bobby Colomby, who personally called her after listening to her work.
'IreneB's contribution to my album was wonderful -says Jeff Lorber himself-. For each song we sent them, Frankie and her came up with just the right approach to compliment my sound and style. I predict big things for them in the future.'
Judging on the reviews that Now Is The Time has already received, the album is a perfect candidate for Jeff Lorber's first Grammy Win, and we anticipate that this collaboration will be the beginning of a big musical friendship between the two.

An Interview with IreneB by Great Unknowns Music Exposé
[+ Show ]
IreneB is this weeks spotlight on The Great Unknowns Presents. Irene came to me a few weeks ago and ...IreneB is this weeks spotlight on The Great Unknowns Presents. Irene came to me a few weeks ago and presented music for me to review for my show. It was such an honor to have such a talented artist seek me out. I listened to the first song, Forgive Me Now and I was immediately hooked. I knew I had to put her in my line-up.
IreneB is a native of Spain and has been singing since she was six years old. At age 18, she began studying music at Aula de Música Moderna y Jazz (The Class of Modern Music and Jazz) in Del Liceo, Madrid. Soon after, in 2005, she released her first Spanish album, Mi Realidad.
Although her home is in Spain, her love for music has always belonged to America. She grew up listening to 90's R&B and now, she is fufilling her dream by working with the legendary Executive Record Producer, Frankie Biggz. Together, they collaborated to create IreneB's first American originated full length album, Metamorphsis.
With the first release of her first album on American soil, Irene now becomes the first Spainard to cross over to English R&B.
I was so honored to have an exclusive one-on-one interview with this sensational artist and this was our conversation:
So, you’ve had a #1 hit in the UK on the independent radio station for 10 weeks straight on, Pittradio and you’ve made the top 10 on the Top 80 countdown on West Side Will along with other top positions on several podcast and internet radio shows like S2R radio and HotMix106.1. How does it feel to be in the top positions in that market?
I feel really proud to be in the top of the charts, even at an independent level. It is a great achievement having in consideration the amount of independent and unsigned artists there are nowadays. After American Idol, America’s Got Talent and all those programs, plus the easiness of recording your own demo nowadays, it seems like there’s been a big boom of new artists, so that makes me really happy that people still discovers and appreciates my music.
Would you give it all up to be heard on the air here nationwide in the states?
I wouldn’t give up my integrity as an R&B artist. I’ve been in the music game for a long time and I’ve been offered all kinds of deals, but I had to change in some way my integrity. It was my weight, the language or the style, or all of them! I talk about it in my song, I Wanna Fly. I prefer to be independent, but be happy with myself and what I do than being major, heard everywhere, but not happy with my work.
You recently met Leela James while you were on tour in Chicago. Are you going to try and do a show together in the near future?
We are definitely thinking about it. We(Biggz and I) already talked to her and we are planning on talking to her management about doing something together. She’s never been to Spain, so I would love to be the first to bring her to my country and my circle, because I know they admire her from afar. She is an incredible artist and her band is amazing, it was such an honor for me to perform in the same stage as her.
Have you met anyone else big that you admire in this business?
During the last few years I’ve been lucky enough to meet and work with some big people in the industry, most of all, producers and songwriters (Frankie Biggz, Trey Mills, Rodolfo Castillo, Iker Gastaminza, etc.) but I’ve also had the opportunity to be close to artists like Mariah Carey, Boyz II Men, Nate James, Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, Luis Fonsi… It’s really inspiring to even being feet away from them. I honestly feel very overwhelmed with all that’s happened to me in the last few years.
Growing up, you’ve always been into R&B music. Who were your major influences?
First and foremost, my biggest influence was and is Mariah Carey, and I can’t believe that even people that don’t know I’m her biggest fan compare my voice to hers. I personally don’t think I’m even close, but I guess I have to learn to take compliments! I love not only her voice but her abilities as a producer, songwriter and arranger, and the fact that she stood there, in the record industry for almost 20 years. Other influences are mainly from the 90’s. I am totally stuck there, people like Boyz II Men, Blackstreet, En Vogue, Jodeci, Guy and so on… I’ll never get over it! In fact, I’m going to bring it back, watch!
Me: Those are some of the greatest artists of our time, Irene. You have great taste in music!
I noticed that you studied music in Spain for 7 years. Are you a native of Spain or did you grow up here in the states?
I am originally from Barcelona, Spain. Full blood Spaniard! That’s what’s “special” about me. I am the first Spaniard to release an English R&B album worldwide. People get weirded out that I sing in English and you can barely tell my accent when I sing! I can't tell you have an accent either.
You recently just came back from a tour in Spain and the UK. How was that experience?
It was awesome! I had already sung in Barcelona, but never like this with a full band and my own show and music. Everyone was so receptive and loving, both in and out of my country. I never thought I could have people getting out of their sits and dance around to my music, really enjoying it! I am really grateful for this opportunity that life has given me.
When did you release your first record? It wasn’t in English, was it?
I released it in 2005 and it was in Spanish, it was called “Mi Realidad” and all songs were produced by Soulfeenix. I never thought those songs were going to be the first step to make my dream come true. I auto financed that record and thanks to it I am where I am today.
Because you’re fluent in Spanish, do you plan on producing another Spanish record since it was so successful the first time?
That’s something that I discuss with a lot of people, especially Spanish-speaking. I did that album because I saw there actually was a growing Spanish-speaking audience for R&B, so I wanted to start small, being known in the R&B scene in Spain. I never thought those songs would make it further than the Spanish borders, but they did. I love my language, but musically speaking I think I’m English at heart. I express myself emotionally a lot better in English, since I grew up listening to old R&B artists, there was no such thing as Spanish R&B! So, to answer your question, “never say never”, but as of now, I stick to English, even though that brings me some problems every now and then! (Laughs out loud)
I can’t believe you work with Frankie Biggz. He’s one of the biggest Indie record producers in today’s industry. You’ve even produced a track with him called, “Tender Soul”. Do you still work with him? Is there a plan on a song collaboration for your next LP?
Absolutely! Frankie is not only my producer, but my best friend. He’s captured the essence of IreneB, and although sometimes we yell and scream at each other in session, I haven’t found anybody as professional and determined as him. He helps me show the best of me and I help him show the best of him! We both love the same music as well, so it’s easy to tell him, “I want this to sound kinda like that song, you know what I mean?” and he knows right away what I’m talking about.
When can your fans expect another great record?
I am in the studio right now, and as we're speaking, Frankie’s working on a new track, so hopefully there will be another IreneB record in 2010. We would like to have it recorded by March-April and be able to launch it for next summer, but you know! You cannot rush creativity! Luckily now we have experience, so we won’t make the mistakes that we made last time!
Once people get a sample of your music, I’m sure they will be searching for a video on Youtube. Any chance a music video will be in the works for you?
As of now we haven’t filmed any videos. Being an Independent artist is all about timing and budgets. As part of a record label and being part of my own promotion, you have to make choices on where to spend the money. Things are starting to catch up, so it seems we will be able to have a video really soon here, maybe for the next single of this album or the new single for next.
When is your next concert? Do you have a large line up in the US or outside of US?
Our next gig is at Traverscity, Mi (Close to Detroit), you guys can check my website for more info on that. As far as line up, we're always getting booked everywhere, so it changes day by day, the best thing is to go to my website to be up-to-date with my gig dates. Also, we're planning something big for New Years, but we still don't know if it will be here or in Europe.
Me: That is really awesome. Thank you so much for your time, Irene and thanks for coming on my show. I can't wait to talk to you again when you release your next ablum. Best of luck to you and I hope to see you on this side of the globe!
