Biography

In the last 5 years, The sbP -The stephen beasley Project- has performed in venues large and small such as; Coffeeshops, Bars, Basement Parties, the Summer in the Square NYC and BMI 7 WTC Festivals, and been on the playlists of DJs in the US, UK, and Africa.

In 2010, their song "23" landed a spot in a commercial for an HIV Anti-Stigma Campaign Ad, which aired on radio stations across New York City that summer. In 2012, The sbP expanded its reach into Canada, and Australia and in the Summer of 2013, music from The sbP will be heard in the Music @ Noon series at Centennial Olympic Park!

The sbP single "Hope for the Future" was chosen to be part of the score for the independant film "Little Brother," and was also performed by lead singer Stephen, on BET APOLLO LIVE (original airdate December 6, 2012).

Musically, Ben Altman (Bass) embodies everything SOUL, David Andrew Moore (Drums) is a Renaissance Man who brings the rhythm and the funk, and Chris Conly (Guitar) is the all-around BLUES BROTHA. Lead singer Stephen Beasley is the guy who does everything to keep the music alive, entertain the fans and give audiences something to remember.

Personally, Ben, Chris and Dave tour and collaborate worldwide with musical projects of a variety of genres. They also find time to teach music to dozens of young people in the NY/NJ/CT area. Stephen connects people living in Brooklyn NY to free education and services in the areas of HIV/AIDS, Diabetes and Obesity and is the co-leader of ACTS of EBC, a Christian Theatrical Troupe.

  The SbP, which stands for The Stephen Beasley Project, is a 4 man rock & soul consisting of 3 amazin...The SbP, which stands for The Stephen Beasley Project, is a 4 man rock & soul consisting of 3 amazingly talented musicians from New England and lead vocalist Stephen Beasley. Their sound is described as a blend of soul, rock, funk, blues and world music. Band members include Ben Altman, Chris Conly and David Andrew Moore.
  
  After designing and honing their sound for several years, sbP hit the ground running in 2008 with the goal of performing in New York City 2 times per month and recording a live album. They achieved their goal and have recently released their freshman album "The Music of Transition."
  
  Stephen Beasley, the group founder and spokesman gives a quick rundown on what the Stephen Beasley Project is and how they came together.
  
  According to Stephen, "The sbP - The Stephen Beasley Project is a New York City based 4 man rock and soul experience that I believe in and work very hard to make work." "I am a former choir boy from Louisville, Kentucky and the guys are from various spots in New England" He continues.
  
  Stephen describes the group's style as "Sometimes it's rock, sometimes it's soul and other times it weaves in and out of funk and blues."
  
  When discussing how he found the other members of the group, he recounts that he "…found Ben Altman on Craigslist in late 2006, with not many plans at all, just a bunch of music swirling around my soul to get out." He continues, "A little later Chris Conly saw me at a gig with a jam band…in Greenwich Village and asked if I wanted to start a band." According to Stephen the last member to join the group, David Andrew Moore came along in 2008 and "…we became The sbP and recorded our debut "The Music of Transition."
  
  As to what people can expect from the group's upcoming projects, Stephen declares it will be "Pure, authentic musical expression with lyrics that are a reflection of life as I see it."

  Where are you guys from?
  I'm a former choir boy from Louisville, the guys are from various spots in New England.
  
  
  
  Describe your style of music?
  Sometimes It's rock, sometimes its soul other times it weaves in and out of funk and blues.
  
  How were you introduced to one another?
  I found Ben Altman on Craigslist in late 2006 .... With not many plans at all... Just that I had a bunch of music swirling around my soul to get out. A little later, Chris Conly saw me at a gig with a jam band at Kennys Castaways in Greenwich Village and asked me if I wanted to start a band and I said "sure." In 2008, David Andrew Moore came along and we became The sbP and we recorded our debut The Music of Transition.
  
  You are at the beginning of your careers and already have a song out featuring on radio stations all around the country how did that come about?
  Through I Heart Radio, its happening slowly but surely.. but its connected us with new fans and new opportunities.
  
  
  What other artists have you had the opportunity to work with?
  Personally, Ive only worked with other emerging artists who are at the beginning of their journey as well. Ben works regularly with artists like Honey LaRochelle, Spit Hot Fire and a great Singer/Songwriter Orly.

  So, people lose they mind in New York City in the summer! One hot day, --WAIT Hot doesnt even describe it.. It was spicy... no HABENERO.-- Anyway, I'm walking up Spring Street in Manhattan, and fell in love with some material thing in a storefront... When, this sweaty jerk in a suit bumps into me and barks! Guess I wasnt paying enough attention to where I was going.

  In his own words:
  
  I guess if you were to look up Stephen Beasley in some kind of "Dictionary of Life," it would read: A totally deconstructed, humbled but WHOLE man, who creates music on his own terms in collaboration with great people (Ben, Chris & Dave of The sbP).
  
  I was at Showtime at the Apollo in January 2003 I didn't win, but I won. Even though I had been singing since I can remember and music had already taken me to many amazing places. I'd have to say the moment I TRULY knew I belonged on stage was at The Apollo that winter day. Monique was the host then, she followed her dreams and we see where its gotten her. I'm still following mine and they've lead me to a great place in my life!
  
  
  
  Since consciousness, I knew making music would always be part of my story.
  One of my proudest moments was the live recording of our debut, "The Music of Transition" in September 2008, at a small club on a Wednesday night. The album is rootsy, unpolished and tells the story of hard-earned lessons and I'd like everyone to hear it.
  
  
  Also being able to perform all the songs I've ever written with The SBP, in Summer of 2010 in the Square Festival in NYC for a crowd of over 1,000 people. Summer in the Square was the debut performance of "Life Takes a While" and "Sad Runner", two of our 2011 singles. They are songs that free me a little more each time I share them with audiences.
  
  
  
  Goals I haven't accomplished yet that I plan on too is finding TRUE FANS of The SBP, finding OUR PEOPLE. If you're out there, you know how to find us!
  
  Also recording a high-quality COMPLETELY LIVE Album, with every musician that has helped me along the way, performing in Major Festivals on at least 3 continents, every year and performing at NYC venues like Central Park Summer Stage, and The Allen Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center where I was once an usher.
  
  Even though Ive been writing music since the day I first heard "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" I didn't get SERIOUS about the development of my music until much later, this is a regret of mine. However, "Life as I've Lived It" shines through every song I make and that something satisfying.
  
  Seriously though, I guess I could describe myself as consistent, but not quite "predictable." As far as things I wish I could change, I would be more "smooth." As far as things I HAVE changed and I am now a better and less judgmental listener (I am proud of this.)
  
  What's the best advice anyone has ever given you, and what advice would you give others who are trying to do what your doing?
  I have not yet determined whether its the BEST ADVICE of my life, But someone recently told me the following (and so I'll pay it forward). "The Road to Hell is PAVED with Bad Boundaries, The Road back from Hell are paves with Good Boundaries." As far as advice to fellow musicians, Ill give this, move one foot in front of the other. Advice that was given to me through the lyrics of our first 2011 single, "Mirror Love":
  
  I'm also excited to release an intensely personal song, "Hope 4 the Future" sometime in the next month. I'm also coordinating a few projects relating to Diabetes, HIV and Community Theatre through various Non-Profits in Brooklyn, NY.

  So tell me Stephen where are you from and how did you make your transition to NYC? Once upon a ...So tell me Stephen where are you from and how did you make your transition to NYC?
  
  
  Once upon a 2002, a bright-eyed, over-accessorized young lad of 22 moved to New York City. That young lad was me. I had 2 suitcases and a 7 month Williamsburg sublet to my name and was greatly anticipating my M F A studies
  
  in Performing Arts Management at Brooklyn College, which I completed 3 years later in 2005.
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  Tell us a little more about your band...its evolution and focus/mission?
  
  
  The sbP is a New York City based, 4 man Rock & Soul experience made up of 3 soulful, talented and amazing musicians from New England and me, Stephen, a former choir boy from the Derby City.... Louisville, Kentucky.
  
  
  In the last 4 years, we've grown from performing in coffee shops, basements and bars to appearing at large sponsored festivals like the 2010 Summer in the Square in Union Square NYC, and landing a placement in a commercial for an HIV Anti-Stigma Campaign Ad which aired on radio stations across New York City during the Summer of 2010.
  
  
  I connected with Ben Altman (Bass/Guitar) on Craigslist in 2006 and we began writing songs. About a year after that, I was preparing to escape the Perils of Quarter Life in New York City by working on a cruise ship and met Chris Conly (Guitar) while doing a gig with my friends Vermont-Based, Hippie Jam Band at Kenny's Castaways in the Village. I got off stage, and after introducing himself he said; "Wanna start a band..." and I replied; "Where were you when I was motivated!"
  
  We stayed in touch as I worked as an Activities Host on the "Pride of Hawaii" and when I returned we added his friend, Drummer Dave Moore to the band and named ourselves The sbP.
  
  
  Musically, Ben is all about the SOUL, Dave is a Renaissance Man that gives me the beat I need when I need it... and Conly... Well, Conly is our BLUES BROTHA! Me? I'm just the guy who is doing everything he can, to keep doing what he loves to do, with the people I love to do it with.
  
  
  On a personal level, all of us are about giving. The guys teach music to hundreds of kids around NY, NJ and CT, while I proudly work with a team dedicated to eradicating HIV Related Stigma, Diabetes and Obesity in the borough of Brooklyn through Federal and NYC Department of Health Programs.
  
  
  
  How would you describe your music? What genre do you see you fit in, or not?
  Our music is a blend of 11 Herbs and Spices with a secret sauce... Kidding... Its a blend of Rock, Soul, Funk, Blues and World Music.
  
  
  
  "Mirror Love" is your new single. Intriguing title. What transpired this song...is it based on personal experience?
  
  
  “Mirror Love” is about taking the moment to find sanity in all the insanity, and then… taking another moment to breathe. One day about a year ago, I woke up, looked in the mirror and it began to crack. When I looked at myself, I didn’t see all the successes I dreamt I would one day see. Many months later, I realized that I would never be able to improve my life from a place of self-hatred and that I could make my dreams happen one step at a time.   Your debut album is called "The Music of Transition," yes? (Another moving title) Overall what do you want for your music?
  
  
  The Music of Transition was a (mostly) live album of 9 songs, done in two takes at a club in Greenpoint, Brooklyn in September 2008, for an audience of about 40. The album was a collection of songs written from 2001-2008, a period of time that stretched from my salad years as an undergrad studying in Australia straight through Graduate School in New York and stretching into the quarter-life crisis of my mid-to-late 20s.
  
  
  The Music of Transition was my declaration to the world (and to myself) that me, my music and my band are worthy contributions to the world. I cannot tell you the gratification I have when I listen to that music. Even though sales have been modest, they've been consistant and that music continues to be a blessing!
  
  
  What I want MOST IN THE WORLD is to for The sbP to give audiences high quality live recordings. Music, in its purest form given from artist to audience is one of the world last great commodities. We've added all sorts of technology, gimmicks and glam to EVERYTHING. And even though I glitz it up in life quite often....I likes my music stripped to its core!

  Lil Kim Lyrics! The Queen Bee and Mister Cee had a jig for the 14th Anniversary of B I G's death and her Black Friday Release at Webster Hall this month. I took two of my BEST friends who were visiting from my hometown Louisville to see her (on a work night no less) and even though it was just an appearance and she didnt do all her verses... I lost my freaking mind, shouting every lyrics as if I was watching her for the first time on MTV's THE GRIND with Junior Mafia in my bedroom, when I was 15.
