Biography

Songstress, musician, dancer, spoken word artist, and social philanthropist are just a few titles held by 2011 Grammy Nominee, Carolyn Malachi (CM). CM is a Washington DC native whose great-grandfather happens to be legendary Jazz pianist John Malachi (acc. Sarah Vaughan, Pearl Bailey, Al Hibbler). She was born from musical roots but did not grow into her talent until 2005, when she was a junior at Shepherd University. After taking a course in sound design, and awakening her sleepy college town with performances on campus and in local clubs, CM realized the power of the arts to make people feel comfortable in their own skin.

CM’s soothing genre-bending blend of Jazz, World, R&B, and Spoken Word has drawn comparisons to Sade, Janelle Monae, and Amy Winehouse. She released the albums Revenge of the Smart Chicks in 2008 and Revenge of the Smart Chicks II in 2009. According to CM, the ‘Revenge of the Smart Chicks’ albums reveal the inner workings of a Smart Chick, which she defines as “any woman who is smart enough to make the daily decision to be authentic.” CM founded the Smart Chicks Network in 2009.

Her 2010 release, the “Lions, Fires & Squares” EP, comprised songs regarding relationships, love, and strength. The songs bear influence of her 2010 tours in South Africa. The single “Orion” earned CM a 2011 Grammy Nomination for Best Urban / Alternative Performance.

The Washington Post describes CM’s infectious musical style as “Hard to put in words”. Centric TV raves, “You know those singers whose music captures you, spins you around —and you love every minute of the journey? Well, Carolyn Malachi falls in that category.” CM is quickly becoming an international household name. Fans around the world identify with her new-age Jazz sound and her personal story.

CM’s path to earning a 2011 Grammy nomination was not easy. In 2009, she experienced traumatic hardships. She lost her job, house, car and other material possessions. To add fuel to the fire, she was involved in a bad relationship and became ill. CM wrapped herself into music for comfort and motivation, thereby turning her adversity into opportunity and a contagious mantra – “Onward n’ upward”.

In her currently untitled 2012 album, CM plans to reveal most – not all – of the details surrounding her personal story. She credits fans around the world for the buzz surrounding the album’s first single, “Beautiful Dreamer”, a motivating fusion of Jazz, Pop, and R&B peppered with West African percussion. FOX News, Centric TV, Clutch Magazine, and more praise the “Beautiful Dreamer” song for its timeless sound and the video for its timely message which was inspired by President Barack Obama’s “It Gets Better” campaign speech.

CM makes people believe in the power of their own dreams. She completes her high-minded aesthetic with haute couture and signature feather lashes from INK Cosmetics. “I wear feathers on my eyes as a reminder to always let your visions take flight.”

  Twenty-five-year-old Carolyn Malachi is one of many progressive black women in Baltimore City who are moving artistically, professionally and civically. Her organization, Smart Chicks, Inc., is a product of that movement.
  Malachi is one of the premier independent artists in the Baltimore-Washington region. For a while, her artistry was restricted to playing with a band. Then one day she decided to break out of her shell and flex her solo muscles. She launched her solo performance career last year and has been moving audiences throughout the music and spoken word scene ever since.
  
  In September 2008, Malachi unleashed her debut CD, Revenge of the Smart Chicks. “It is about being intelligent and bold enough to be who I am as a woman— unrestricted,” said Malachi. Coming from a family with a penchant for perfection— which was reflected in her song “Needles” from her sophomore release, Revenge of the Smart Chicks II: Ambitious Gods released in June 2009. The musical process has lent itself to express the embodiment of her own values. “People were endeared to this project,” said Malachi. One person was Araina Ford, then-president of S.O.U.L. (Sisters of Unity and Love), an organization based at the University of Maryland College Park (UMCP).
  
  After witnessing Malachi’s performance, she was requested to organize a Revenge of the Smart Chicks show at the Nyumburu Cultural Center at UMCP. Over 200 people were dazzled by the talents of drummers, poets, singers and other artists. “I’m constantly redefining myself,” said Malachi, Smart Chicks founder and creative director who will be attending the Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) program for Integrated Design at the University of Baltimore this coming fall. Smart Chicks as a 501c(3) (pending) nonprofit organization is dedicated to nurturing, serving uplifting, and mobilizing young black women to realize and actualize their own power.
  
  Malachi has engendered relationships with other progressive women in the city who want to make a deep impact beyond giving monetary donations, but did not see an appropriate vehicle. “Giving $5 is not enough,” said Malachi, who intends to create a speaker series for women artists, as well as implementing art career programs inside the Baltimore City Public School System. The organization is also focused on improving the visibility of local independent artists. “This is a very cultured city, and independent artists are a big part of that,” said Malachi.
  
  Smart Chicks provided programming at this year’s African American Heritage Festival. They partnered with Poetry for the People of Bmore (P4PB) for their Teen Poetry Slam and justlovepoetryink for their Interpretation Sunday, an event where poets performed their interpretation of works by internationally renowned visual artist Synthia St. James. Their signature event, “Woven” featured collaborations between poets and photographers from Brooklyn, New York and Baltimore. “You’ve got to pursue your passion, do what makes you happy,” said a bright, energetic Malachi. “Everybody should have that luxury.”
  
  Equally as important to Malachi is for young women to liberate themselves from the aesthetic chains of a society that dishonors their own images.
  
  “I am very focused on building the image of women from the individual. I want young ladies to believe in themselves and to be successful,” said Malachi, who added, “The presence of strong men is also important. We should celebrate the brothers in our community instead of talking about them so badly.”
  As eyes are the window to the soul, Malachi’s were rich with introspection. “Everything comes from having a healthy spirit,” said Malachi. “Find your gifts and dedicate them to a higher purpose.”

Inspired by President Barack Obama's It Gets Better address, Malachi tackles the subject of bullying with young actress Niya Bell playing a student who gets taunted by her peers for getting good grades. The bullies chase her into the woods and rip her notebook to shreds once they catch up to her. As this is happening, the video cuts to movers and shakers from the Washington, DC arts community standing with their eyes closed in a dream-like state. Meanwhile back in the woods, Carolyn finds little Niya and helps her to gather her belongings before handing the child's notebook back to her in tact. The youngster turns around to thank Malachi only to find that she has disappeared as she is left to wonder if it was all a dream.
