Biography
"…They've got the infectious enthusiasm of a young garage band discovering the joys of rock and roll."
-The Boston Phoenix.
Hailing from Boston, the all female Apple Betty is a fun punk/pop rock act that breeds lots of energy with hard driving guitar, gripping female vocals, and hook-laden melodies. At times cleverly combining punk in-your-face rock vocals with pop sophistication - other times darker subdued tones. Very much a band that releases their personal observations, and sometimes frustrations of life through their music.
The tasty trio of punk chicks formed during a hiatus from their professional lives three years ago to record raw rock tunes. Fate intervened when Kerri, an environmental engineer and Jessica, a social worker, who had known each other for years, serendipitously met Caroline, a documentary filmmaker. They found a desire to rekindle dormant musical cravings from the past, and to express newly developed ones. The timing was right and they said "Let's Play!", which happens to be the title of their debut release. After the first practice, they knew it would work - it just clicked immediately. Released in September 2006, "Let's Play!" enjoyed great regional success with college radio play, commercial specialty radio play, and it took the #1 spot on the Noise Boston Top 30 Radio Chart that month. In May 2008, Apple Betty released, "ABCD", a five song EP that stays true to their style. Well received by their audience, it hit #14 on the chart for the summer 2008.
THIS JUST IN- The girls have spent some long hours in the studio recently cranking out their second full-length album, "Streakin' 'Cross the Sky" set for release on Saturday, January 10, 2009 at the Middle East Upstairs, 472 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA.
Recorded at Galaxy Park Studios with Boston's underground Engineer/Producer Richard Marr, the band has continued to develop the harmonies that they have been credited for since their first album while letting the influence of Marr push them to experiment with sonic content and production. The solid musical growth of the band is evident with Streakin', with the Bettie's playful nature cutting through crystal clear. This CD is sure to fill the needs of hungry fans.
Apple Betty may be best described as a mix of the Ramones and the Go-Go's. Others have said Buddy Holly, Fanny, or the Runaways meeting Sonic Youth. The ladies compare themselves to Blondie with a modern punk edge.
Apple Betty has performed live since 2006 at many venues around the Boston area, and selected locations in Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Maine, sharing the stage with popular regional bands such as Chris Brokaw Rock Band (MA), King Memphis (ME), The Nightingales (UK), Mr. Airplane Man (MA), Shepherdess (MA), The Ramoniacs (MA), and The Liz Borden Band (MA)
They have also played live on many college radio stations such as WUML (UMass Lowell), WMFO, (Tufts University), WMBR (MIT), WZBC (Boston College), and have had air play on commercial radio specialty shows, such as Bay State Rock (WAAF), New England Product (WFNX), and Boston Emissions (WBCN).
Their live shows are fun and energetic. Apple Betty is adept at motivating fans to sing along with a refrain, or shake it on the dance floor. Extruding excitement and packing their live venues has built the anticipation of their latest release with great appeal to their trendy, urban 20 to 30 year old fan base. It's sure to attract a crowd and keep them rocking all night!
