Biography

Norway's most relentless noise-rock trio ÅRABROT (pronounced OH-ROH-BROT) are en route to releasing their third studio album, engineered by Steve Albini and mastered by Bob Weston, in January 2009. Spawned from the small yet vital Norwegian underground "non-scene" boasting bands from Noxagt and Ultralyd to Burzum, comes a band named appropriately after a dirty dump outside on the west coast of Norway. Årabrot's second album “Rep.Rep” in 2006, and EPs & 7"s between 2007-2008, received rave reviews in Norway’s top newspapers, with its signature touch from the maestro of sludge and noise himself, producer Billy Anderson (Melvins, Neurosis, Sleep). Yet they stubbornly remain on the peripheral of the Norwegian music scene, with a unique vision of dissonance and depravity that takes cues as eclectic as Captain Beefheart, to Darkthrone, to Sunn0))). Their catalog has developed and matured consistently along the trail of 2005‘s “Proposing a Pact with Jesus”, the startling debut co-produced by Serena-Maneesh frontman Emil Nikolaisen.

After three extensive European tours (and soon to be embarking on their fourth), Årabrot have shared the stage with the likes of High on Fire, Southern Records’ Volt, Load Records’ Noxagt and Usaisamonster, Qui, Electric Wizard, and more.

This forthcoming record will be released on Norway Rat Records (one of the oldest independent alternative labels in Norway) and distributed by Indie Distribution.

  This Norwegian "noise-rock" trio dresses like Jane’s Addiction in some pics, pierced-and-totaled gut...This Norwegian "noise-rock" trio dresses like Jane’s Addiction in some pics, pierced-and-totaled gutter punks in others. In a bar in Trondheim, Norway, drummer Marakel sported an Enslaved T-shirt and a toque, and spoke at length about local black metal, how he and his bandmates were run out of their hometown for looking "suspicious."
  
  On album number two, Årabrot owns an old-school Ålice Donut feel or Beefheart dance, but with the strangulated Chicago post-post-no wave snarl of, say, Lovely Little Girls or, better yet, Scissor Girls—all imploding with a heavier treble-charged thump. This particular dagger, "Fumble Finger," has something to do with "the land of the clitoris": The bass walks slowly into quagmires and horn-dog breathiness then crunched dynamic throbs. (Check that boxy last-minute drum fill!) Billy Anderson’s sludge production is great, different than what he did for Melvins, Sleep, Mr. Bungle or Neurosis... More rusted, polluted, sick. (Though, wait... A little Patton in the vocal antics?)
  
  The one-sheet mentions that Årabrot is a mountainous dump in the band’s Haugesund hometown plus a school for troubled teenagers. In the aforementioned bar, Marakel brought this up, tracing the veins of his arm, explaining how the muck from the dump makes its way through the city, likening it, it seemed, to his own circulatory system, or maybe the human condition. Cesspools, right?
