Biography

Elsewhere, a progressive-punk/power pop trio from Boston is the product of a rare musical mutation that combines the energy and raw angst of punk with the
ambition and creativity of progressive rock. Presently, the band is releasing the future EP of the year and next great rock project entitled “1981” backed by the singles “1981” and “Before The Stars Align”. World
domination will commence imminently…

The trio consists of guitarist/vocalist Michael Aroian, drummer Craig Morrison and bassist Tom Morris-a trio of atypical punks with corporate day jobs who bring the duality of their existence to the stage with their
high-energy live performances. This contradiction between image and sound pulls the listener into a state of emotional release through thought-provoking music. The truly progressive part of Elsewhere’s music is
that it also has a pop sensibility that people can appreciate and relate to
on an entirely different level.

Influenced by a wide array of bands such as Rush, the Police, Duran Duran, and the Sex Pistols, and described as a more guitar driven version of The
Killers (and fatter version of 30 Seconds To Mars), Elsewhere has developed a smooth, electric and groove-oriented sound that transcends the wavering
music trends of the day. The new EP will prove to be a much-anticipated follow-up to the well received (yet commercially pathetic) albums Outbound
and Perception, both released during a simpler time. Regarding the two lead tracks, the raunchy yet radio-friendly single “Before The Stars Align“ is
more of an over the top power-pop song, while the lead track “1981“ demonstrates a nod to that progressive and new wave aesthetic Elsewhere
continues to pursue. Through airplay on national radio shows, appearances on film (“Mr. Sadman”) and TV (“Live Through This”), and performances
throughout the Northeast, Elsewhere is continuing to attract interest from radio, club audiences, magazines, music supervisors and record labels. Most
importantly, unlike bands that have come before and after them, they have not stopped and continue to pursue ways to create and disseminate their
music to the masses despite the broken model that is today’s music industry…

  Maynard — Having been on the Massachusetts music scene for about 20 years, the alternative progressive pop rock band Elsewhere is no stranger to having attention near Boston. But recently the band has been getting press for its latest album “1981” not only in America but also in Europe and Canada.
  
  “1981 isn’t a year, it’s a state of mind,” lead vocalist Michael Aroian, a Maynard resident, said of the title track. “1981 makes me feel very nostalgic, but was [also] big [to me] in how the technologies and culture of the time came together,” he added
  
  The band recorded the album back in 2010. “1981” has been written about in magazines and on blogs from Germany and Italy to Finland, Norway and the Czech Republic
  
  “What happened was a few years ago I was watching some old footage of The Police, and as a personal student of the band I noticed they went touring in the U.S. before they were big in the U.K.,” Aroian said.
  
  “By touring around in the U.S. they spread their notoriety in a booming market. I had an epiphany that if we did the exact opposite of what The Police did we can get attention in a market that isn’t as competitive as the U.S.,” Aroian said.
  
  Since Elsewhere has started marketing itself oversees the band has received “really good press in Italy and Belgium concerning the sound and the production of the CD,” Aroian said.
  
  Aroian was interviewed in the Belgian magazine Rock Tribune, explaining what the name “1981” means to him. Rock Tribune gave the album a positive review: roughly translated to English, it called it “a very catchy combination of the ferocity of The Police linked to the adventurous and technically excellent game of Rush.”
  
  Drummer Craig Morrison said people on both sides of the Atlantic have reacted to the audio mixing.
  
  “They were very impressed with the sound quality because not many CDs have that (quality), as many bands now try to record everything on their own,” Morrison said.
  
  Added Aroian, “All of this was done via excellent producer David Minehan and Sound Engineer Dave Locke who helped us take our time and get work done on an affordable budget.”
  
  The band said it is driven to perform for the fun and chance at fame.
  
  “I joined because I liked the music, and I needed something other than my 9-to-5 cubical prison,” said bass player Kevin Swaluk, the band’s fifth bassists in its 20-year history. “What do I want to get out of this band? Free beer.”
  
  Aroian said along with the attention, the band is earning fans.
  
  “A lot of our shows have been getting better and better. People either really love our stuff, or really hate it,” Aroian said. “But when they love, us they truly love us.”

  The opener is a tribute to the eighties and a catchy tune beyond compare, packed in schrammelnde guitars and synth sounds anachronistic. Michael Aroian gives Chose a urbritischen painting, for his whining voice would allow New Wave weddings the heart beat faster for girls. In the next hit, "Before the Stars Align" (nice powerful riff here), he holds conversations with himself, and noticed again and again the chorus, the crowd ELSEWHERE in the vicinity of the pillar saints CHEAP TRICK (listen to "marginal"). However, they are more rock and sound "American" where to "1981" Europe clearly makes music, origin of the group or not.
  
  With the gentle Schunkler "Retreat" break ELSEWHERE the cheerful bustle for the first time in a thoughtful touch. The light-footed tracks, especially "Connection", reminiscent of British indie-heroes of modern times, carrying the "The" in the name of the island and the trio has also adopted the custom of the bass move too pleasing to the fore, leading to Things like "Waiting For A Spotlight Alone" and the catchy "Faces & Places" leads. The comparison to RUSH, envisaged by the record company is not actually out of thin air, so it is limited to the last two slices of Canadians and to "1981" especially the song "Runner" is listening. "Remember" the plate gently heaves across the finish line and podium.
  
  CONCLUSION: ElseWheres "1981" is a recommended disc for people who live with all the nostalgia and happiness in the now and find it to imagine a British version of the cheesy-FOO FIGHTERS with THE CURE hairstyle. Hits galore, but not off the drawing board.

  Met hun gloednieuwe ‘1981’-album keert Boston trio Elsewhere terug naar het jaar van de titel. Dat jaartal is voor zanger/gitarist Michael Aroian een ‘state of mind’: ‘Het was leuk leven toen, het idee heerste van mogelijkheden te hebben en je dromen te kunnen realiseren. Mijn identificatie met dat jaar is evenzeer muzikaal. Ik kocht toen, denk ik, mijn eerste plaat, een album van Cheap Trick, maar ik en Craig (Morrison –drums) hadden oudere broers die ons lieten kennismaken met acts als Rush en euh… Men At work. Muziek, technologie, mode… al die dingen kwamen in dat jaar sterk tot uiting. Voor mij is het simpelweg het begin van de moderne jaren. Ik ging toen ook naar mijn eerste zomerkamp en dat leidde tot, laat ik zeggen, mijn eerste ‘interessante’ contacten met meisjes, een leuke bonus!’
  Op de bio wordt de muziek van Elsewhere beschreven als ‘progressive-punk/power pop’, een niet-alledaagse combinatie, die nog blijkt te kloppen ook, want zelf vonden we de band klinken als aanstekelijke combinatie van de vinnigheid en dynamiek van The Police, gekoppeld aan het avontuurlijke en speltechnisch voortreffelijke van het Rush van die tijd. ‘Inderdaad, heel wat mensen vergelijken ons met het Rush van de vroege jaren ‘80 (dat in die periode wel wat kenmerken van The Police absorbeerde in zijn eclectische stijl – rc), maar The Police is ook een stichtend voorbeeld voor ons. De huidige populaire muziek is best oké, vind ik, zoals bijvoorbeeld Adele of Wolfmother, maar die is gekend van jaren terug en vooral al vele keren opnieuw gedaan. Zelf spiegel ik Elsewhere liever aan The Killers of The Bravery, maar dan met een progressief tintje.’ aldus Aroian.
  Hoewel de band reeds actief is sinds midden jaren ’90 en er middels ‘Outbound’ (1997) en ‘Perception’ (2001) twee albums verschenen heeft het tot nu geduurd om een plaat in Europa uit te brengen. ‘1981’ is de titel van een ep uit 2009 en de vier songs daarvan werden, met een half dozijn nummers van vroeger, samengebracht op het album dat nu als ‘1981’ circuleert in Europa. ‘Een kleine Europese toer zou leuk zijn,’ aldus Aroian, ‘misschien kunnen we ons spiegelen aan The Police, dat pas doorbrak nadat de band naar de US trok omdat men in eigen land niet aan de bak kwam. Wij willen graag de omgekeerde beweging maken en hetzelfde succes meemaken!’
  Er is voor deze Amerikanen een sterke band met het oude continent, want Morrison heeft Schotse roots, die van bassist Marc Ubaldino situeren zich in Italië en Aroain is half Iers, half Armeens. Een van de meest opvallende bijdragen op ‘1981’ is dan ook ‘To The Surface (For Armenia)’ waarbij Aroian refereert aan de –in België en Nederland erkende- Armeense genocide in het Ottomaanse Rijk in 1915. Een gruweldaad waarbij naar schatting tussen de 300.000 en 1.500.000 Armeniërs omkwamen. Aroian: ‘System Of A Down heeft dit ook al aangekaart voorheen, maar ik wou ook graag mijn woordje plaatsen in die kwestie. Dergelijke thema’s liggen gevoelig in Europa en zelfs in de US, waar men Turkije niet wil schofferen vanwege een aantal duidelijke redenen. Maar door dit te ontkennen indertijd is het een paar tientallen jaren later opnieuw kunnen gebeuren in Europa. We zijn intussen bijna een eeuw verder en het lijkt me hoogtijd dat men dit ook in Turkije als dusdanig erkent. De Duitsers hebben ook hun fouten toegegeven, dus waarom zouden de Turken dit niet kunnen?’

  Net als ‘1965’ (The Afghan Whigs) is ‘1981’ een titel die refereert aan een bijzonder jaar voor ondergetekende. De eerste stereo-installatie en elpees, waarvan ‘Moving Pictures’ van Rush een van de eerste aankopen was, Atari spelcomputers, synthesizers en herexamens voor wiskunde typeerden die periode. Dit drietal uit Boston refereert ook zeer bewust naar dit jaar omdat, naast het eerder vermelde Rush ook acts als The Police en zelfs Duran Duran muzikale bronnen blijken te zijn en 1981 was toch een piekjaar voor al deze bands. Soit, in plaats van classic (retro) rock uit de jaren ’70 of gerecycleerde new wave uit de jaren ’80 krijg je hier een erg aanstekelijke combinatie van de vinnigheid en dynamiek van The Police gekoppeld aan het avontuurlijke en speltechnisch voortreffelijke van Rush. In die tijd was het trouwens het Canadese trio dat een aantal facetten van The Police in zijn muziek integreerde - denk maar aan songs als ‘Vital Signs’ en ‘New World Man’. Bij Elsewhere heeft zanger Michael Aroian ook iets heliumgetint in zijn stem, maar is hij als zanger een stuk vlakker dan Sting of Geddy Lee en is hij ook verantwoordelijk voor de irritante ‘tadatatata’-achtergrondzang (dat zal dan de Duran Duran-invloed zijn) tijdens voor de rest lekker wegrockende bijdragen als ‘To The Surface (For Armenia)’ en ‘Retreat’. Bij de eerste draaibeurten waren we vooral onder de indruk van het straffe, openende titelnummer met weidse gitaren en daarover gedrapeerde synthesizerlijnen (de goeie ouwe Rolands, Korgs en Yamaha’s) en ‘Before The Stars Align’, dat verder gaat op de ingeslagen weg. Een paar uur later valt dan toch ook de tweede helft van ‘1981’ op waarbij het puntige Fender baswerk van Marc Ubaldino (eveneens met de groeten aan Sting en Geddy Lee) en het soepele sneltempo drumwerk van Craig Morrison meer uit de verf komen tijdens heavy rockers als ‘Faces & Places’ en ‘Runner’. Bij het aanhoren van ‘Connection’, met een magistrale gitaargalm en flanger-pedaaleffect op het einde, zitten we met onze gedachten écht wel in 1981. Prachtjaar, behalve voor die herexamens dan… en een titel van een album dat we ten zeerste weten te appreciëren. www.elsewhere-band.com

Sicherlich fast jeder, diese Bands hört man täglich im Radio. Doch wer hat schon einmal etwas von ELSEWHERE gehört? Die Jungs aus Boston fabrizieren ähnlichen Sound wie die schon genannten Acts, schmücken das Ganze jedoch noch etwas progressiver aus. Vor kurzem erschien ihr neuer Longplayer „1981“. Geboten wird dem Hörer grandiose Soundqualität mit verträumten Riffs, schönen Synthie-Parts und guten Clean-Gesang. Diese Platte ist perfekt für einen sonnigen Tag mit viel Entspannung, die ruhigen und sanften Klänge laden zum Träumen ein. Schon der Opener und Titeltrack verzaubert den Hörer und lässt jeglichen Stress verfliegen. ELSEWHERE können allerdings auch richtig groovige Riffs abfeuern, dafür ist der Track „Remember“ der beste Beweis. Abwechslungsreich ist die Scheibe allemal, Langeweile kommt, dank der Progressivität und der daraus entspringenden Kreativität, nicht auf. „1981“ ist ein Spitzen Pop/Rock-Album und stellt eine wirkliche Alternative zu den aus dem Radio bekannten Bands dar. I’ll try to explain the basics of it. I say progressive punk. First of all, I don’t know when this style originated. Roughly in this decade. The progressive part comes from the fact that it stretches itself to better care to accentuate the arrangements. Rush instructs! Meanwhile the punk side represents the mood. A strong mood. Aggressive with moderation. An energy always present below the surface. In a nutshell, this is progressive punk. To me, I don’t give a damn about the definition. I only have to describe it.
  
  Now to Elsewhere. The band has a sort of discrete notoriety on the East Coast due to intensive promotional activity. They have already released several albums. “1981” is their latest. This is a band with a varied background. That doesn’t want to be constrained to one specific genre. This characteristic is shows itself-in full evidence- on the above mentioned album. It is clear that Elsewhere wants to experiment in every direction. They are not for the monothematic. Everything else! They accept the challenge to put themselves in play and they succeed with results more than acceptable..
  
  The album “1981” is a beautiful album for many reasons. The digipack booklet is truly pleasing.
  The graphics are very well done. That light blue is wondrous. Naturally, all of the work that went into producing a release of a certain type is of a level decidedly superior to the average. The band had at their disposal a lordly recording studio. It is what allowed them to achieve a very convincing sound. No flaws or imperfections. The mixing and post-production were affected with skill. Everything sounds as it should. The sound itself is like the sum of various recorded tracks. The sound is strong, vibrant, electric and very well orchestrated. Perhaps, not even the major [labels] could produce an album like this…
  
  Elsewhere pleases many audiences. There is the lover of rock and nothing else. There is the punk lover. There is the New Wave lover. There is the lover of underground rock. There is the lover of a certain hard rock. In short, Elsewhere have the ability to unite under one umbrella the composite family of contemporary rock. And frankly they are handling a beautiful page of contemporary rock. No limits. No boundaries. Only rock. At its base, it’s only rock ‘n’roll…

  Elsewhere combines the upbeat punk attitude for which Boston is known with a progressive rock groove and a new-wave resonance, which combined helps to makes each of their songs radio-friendly. On the band’s MySpace page, they cite Rush, U2, Radiohead and Nirvana as their influences and this diversity is evident in their music as each track has its own definite sound. Singer Mike Aroian's vocals sound like a blend of styles between Brandon Flowers and Simon Le Bon, as he sings over catchy, electric beats that will certainly keep your feet moving.
  
  Don't take my word for it alone though... the band's latest EP, 1981, landed at number 17 on the KKBB album chart, its self-titled single listed as number 15 on the KKBB singles chart and Instant magazine describes the band as "quite possibly one of the best bands that nobody in Boston has heard of." Elsewhere successfully forays into rock music's different sub-genres creating a distinct sound all to their own, and an EP that people of all ages and musical tastes will thoroughly enjoy.

  I contacted the band for some more info and then played them on my weekend radio show (where both tracks sounded great on-air) and I’m looking forward to hearing more from their new EP and other futureclassics, I also hope that they can find their way over to the UK in 2011 for they are one of ‘those’ bands who sit mid-atlantic, American-English. The band's sounds smacks of late 80's/early 90's tunes ala REM, Smithereens, and Cracker. It's easy to see this three piece outfit didn't really overthink their sound, they really didn't need to. Not a bad thing mind you, actually quite the opposite. Elsewhere creates very simple and straight forward pop music. The music is guitar dominated and full of energy and excitement. The vocals are very appealing and smooth ( fitting perfectly with the music.) This is a top quality release housed in a beautiful digi-pack with top shelf sound production! A great find and highly recommended! Be the first on your block to discover ELSEWHERE!!! The new EP will prove to be a much-anticipated follow-up to the well received (yet commercially pathetic) albums Outbound and Perception, both released during a simpler time. Regarding the two lead tracks, the raunchy yet radio-friendly single “Before The Stars Align“ is more of an over the top power-pop song, while the lead track “1981“ demonstrates a nod to that progressive and new wave aesthetic Elsewhere continues to pursue.
