Biography

Singer/songwriter guitarist and slide player Robert Richter is an energetic performer creating music blending different genres from folk to blues to rock to Celtic played with passion and energy as solo, duo or with his band. He describes the sound as "Dirty Folk Rock Blues."

Richter’s credits include appearing on Tom May's nationally syndicated radio program "River City Folk," carried on more than 250 NPR and community radio affiliates nationwide.

In addition, his music was played on the "Bob Dylan Radio Hour" heard on the Sirius Satellite Network and on KUSF-FM in San Francisco.

He recently performed live on both KOIN-TV (CBS affiliate in Portland) during their morning news show and on KGW-TV (NBC affiliate in Portland) on their "Live at 7" weekday evening program. Listed below is a link to a video of the KGW broadcast.

For the past 6 years Richter has performed with duo partner fiddler Jessica Hitchborn. She is a two time winner of the Oregon State Old Time Fiddlers Competition, and competed for the national title in Weiser, Idaho. One reviewer called the sound "outlaw folk," because of their multiple genre influences in their music.

Talented singer Anna-Lisa Adams often performs with Richter and Hitchborn singing both lead and backup. Adams began recording in Nashville as a teenager and has extensive touring experience.

Richter's recordings include a CD released in 2011 with Hitchborn featuring original songs, slide guitar instrumentals and traditional Celtic tunes. His newest release "Change of Heart" features new original songs recorded live.

  Portland-based Americana band “Moonlight Mile” will release their debut CD titled “Wildwood Flower” on May 1st.
  
  Founded by veteran Portland musicians Robert Richter and Dana Fontaine, the band is fueled by the duo’s collective vision to connect with others through song; both are creative singer/songwriters as well as dedicated musicians. The debut CD is a blend of the pair’s original songs and traditional folk and Celtic tunes, some dating back centuries.
  
  “We wanted this first CD to showcase not only our own writing but also our influences, especially early American folk and Celtic music,” said Richter, who sings and plays guitar, slide, dobro, and bass. Fontaine, who contributes lead and harmony vocals as well as guitar, flute, keys, bass, and percussion, says, “songwriting and music are powerful forms of communication that reach across generations. Beyond our own originals, we choose songs that have a valuable message or an historical significance.” Fontaine has performed professionally for many years and has worked with luminaries such as blues icon Ellen Whyte and Dennis Marcellino of the Tokens (Lion Sleeps Tonight). She counts the late Dave Carter as a friend and one of her major songwriting influences.
  
  The CD opens with Richter’s autobiographical “Late Night Radio,” a country-fied upbeat pop song that describes Richter’s experience as a North Portland ten-year-old tuning into radio stations after dark from far away places such as San Francisco and Los Angeles. Fontaine’s nostalgic “Treehouse” brings charm to sadness with a bittersweet taste of days gone by. In “Here and Gone,” Richter writes about living in the now and not taking things for granted, with the understanding that one’s life can turn upside down in a moment’s notice. With “Too Good,” Fontaine kicks it up with a lively hook and a hard-driving beat, pounding on scammers and con-artists in a humorous tale.
  
  The CD’s title track, “Wildwood Flower,” is the duo’s beautifully sparse rendition of the song that was originally written in 1860 and later recorded by the Carter Family. Another song included from that era, “Wayfaring Stranger,” was written in the 1880s and has been recorded by such diverse artists as Burl Ives, Emmylou Harris, Jack White of the White Stripes, and Eva Cassidy. "Motherless Children," is song as well from that era that features Fontaine's heartfelt vocals and Richter's slide guitar.
  
  Other tracks include Richter’s instrumental slide-guitar groove “River Song” and two Celtic instrumentals from the middle ages: “Rakes of Kildare” and “Flowers of Edinburgh,” featuring Fontaine on flute and piccolo.
  
  Moonlight Mile will appear in a number of festivals and outdoor events this spring and summer, with the first major performance set for the Calico Spring Music Festival in Yermo, California on May 7th. The show schedule also includes the Portland Rose Festival on June 3rd and five appearances throughout the summer for the Portland Park Bureau’s popular series, “Movies in the Park.”
  
  Richter and Fontaine perform with a rotating cast of “A List” guest musicians who complete the band lineup.

  Portland singer/songwriter and slide guitarist Robert Richter will perform his solo show at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at redhare, 260 10th St. Tickets are $10 at the door.
  
  A versatile guitarist and songwriter, Richter is known for his ability to perform a variety of styles from acoustic to electric to blues to folk. Richter enjoys electrifying his audiences with energy, enthusiasm, a sense of humor and most of all his innate ability to "connect with people." His original songs range from the up-tempo rock-a-billy blues style that originated at Sun Records in Memphis in the 1950s to Dylan-influenced ballads about life and love.
  
  As an instrumentalist, he stays busy as a session musician and sideman and keeps an active live performance schedule with both his solo shows and as a player for other artists.
  
  In 2007 as a member of the folk rock band Blue Lightning, Richter performed on the nationally syndicated program "River City Folk." Hosted by folk singer Tom May, the program is carried on more than 200 public radio stations and NPR affiliates across the United States. In addition, the band's music was played on the "Bob Dylan Radio Hour" heard on the Sirius Satellite Network and on KUSF-FM in San Francisco.
