Biography
Born in Chicago, raised in Tampa, Carlos Hernandez, better known as “Maintain”, relocated to New York where his musical creativity would be taken to another level. Growing up, Maintain always showed a great affinity for music. The son of proud, hard working Puerto Rican parents, Maintain grew up with dreams of becoming a professional baseball player. These dreams were cut short when he realized his future would take a different route but with similar rewards. It was then that Maintain's journey began. At a young age his mother and father would say that he would memorize old soulful records after only listening to them a few times.
An avid reader and writer, Maintain's favorite book is the Autobiography of Malcolm X while his favorite writer is Langston Hughes. Along with powerful reading, Maintain’s musical influences range from some of the most talented artists in music including and not limited to, Nas, Common, Ghostface Killah, Outkast, Jay-Z, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Earth, Wind and Fire, Sam Cooke, John Coltrane and Miles Davis. With influential artists such as these sculpting his creativity, it’s no wonder Maintain is on the verge of perfecting his craft as an inspiring MC and a well recognized lyricist.
With witty rhymes and slicker cadences Maintain has become a unique lyricist in his own right. Maintain has been steadfast at getting his name out to the masses opening up for such artist as KRS-ONE, Nas, Joell Ortiz and others. He recently traveled to Thailand pairing with one of Asia's biggest hip-hop groups Thaitanium to perform pieces from his newly released project Maintain The Music. Along with the music scene, Maintain has also touched the movie screen. He recently played roles in two independent short films. "The Lesson Plan" and "El Panuelo" both of which are being recognized internationally and receiving great reviews.
Combining his influences with his accomplishments to date, Maintain continues to create timeless and powerful music.
