Currently touring to support the recent release of his Honest Love CD, Brian Mackey is a singer/songwriter with a folky rock/pop edge.
Honest Love features the upbeat title track and the autobiographical and introspective song, “Florida.” Brian Mackey also takes the listener on an emotional ride with the soulful “Sunshower” and the alt-rockabilly track, “Out On The Road.” Honest Love is available on iTunes, Amazon and all major online retailers.
Mackey has broken the mold of a typical singer/songwriter, smashed it to bits, and has created a new sound that captivates the soul. His music is an eclectic mix of acoustic and synth-driven, up-tempo indie rock with a hint of Americana. Originally from a tin roof town on the Northern Florida/Georgia border, his songs reflect life experiences and the new found freedoms of an artist in New York City.
Mackey was featured on the Songs of Love for Japan compilation CD, which also included songs by Sarah Barielles, Ani DiFranco and Tori Amos. His song “Color Blue” is in the feature film, “Fake” which stars Robert Loggia and Gabriel Mann, to be released January 2012, and in the feature film, “Fathoms Deep,” releasing in February 2012. His “Honest Love” video was released in March of 2011, shot in Chicago by director Nick Cavalier. The video for his song “Sunshower” is currently in post production, slated for a release in Fall of 2011. Brian is also working on his next album, scheduled for release in early 2012.
Joining Brian on the Bluebird Cafe stage will be Nashville’s own singer/songwriter/producer Sam Ashworth, son of songwriter and producer Charlie Peacock (Amy Grant, Civil Wars, Switchfoot) Sam has garnered international success having written and performed with Six Pence Non the Richer, Leah Nash, and is currently producing the band Attwater.
The Bluebird Café is one of the world’s preeminent listening rooms and the venue has gained worldwide recognition as a songwriter’s performance space where the “heroes behind the hits” perform their own songs; songs that have been recorded by chart-topping artists in all genres of music. On any given night, artists such as LeAnn Rimes, John Prine, Jojo Herman, (Widespread Panic) and Phil Vassar mingle with writers such as American Idol Song Contest winner Regie Hamm, (The Time of My Life/David Cook).

I got a package in the mail back in August promoting a NYC singer/songwriter named Brian Mackey. I finally got a chance to listen to Brian’s recent Honest Love EP. The six-song masterpiece features the title track, “Sun Shower” and “Color Blue,” which were definitely much lighter than I expected and am used to listening to. I have to admit, though, that I enjoyed listening to these tracks.
Brian Mackey, originally from the North Florida/Georgia region, has found a new home in New York City. It was Brian’s relocation that gave him much of his recent songwriting inspiration. Musically, he has nothing but an eclectic mix of acoustic and synthesizer-driven indie rock, which is pretty soothing to listen to.
Big things have been happening for Brian Mackey lately. He was recently featured on the Songs Of Love For Japan compilation CD, which also included songs by Sarah Barielles, Ani DiFranco and Tori Amos. His song “Color Blue” was featured in the indie flick Fake and the new feature film Fathoms Deep. His “Honest Love” music video was released in March with a video for “Sun Shower” to be released sometime this month. Every now and then, you’re bound to have one of “those” days. You know, where you start the day off ...Every now and then, you’re bound to have one of “those” days. You know, where you start the day off on the wrong foot — spilling your coffee or missing your train — and you think to yourself, “Ugh. This is one of those days, huh?”
Whenever I’m having a day like that, I turn to music to put me back on track and just hope the rest of the day will turn around. I usually put on a more mellow playlist — it tends to bring back my sanity a lot quicker than techno house music.
So for this week’s Fresh Meat playlist, I’ve decided to go down a more chill and relaxed route for when you’re having a “meh” moment. A couple of the songs are more dreamy and chillwave, focusing more on the blending of sounds, while the others emphasize the beauty of a sweet-sounding voice with acoustic instruments.
Sometimes I find that simple sounds and mellowed beats are all I need in a song to make it something worth listening to, which is what you’ll find on this week’s round-up. And if nothing else, I hope this playlist turns one of those coffee-spilling days into a “free cup of coffee at your favorite cafe” days.

Brian Mackey's music is a breath of fresh air that deserves to be inhaled. His latest EP, 'Honest Lo...Brian Mackey's music is a breath of fresh air that deserves to be inhaled. His latest EP, 'Honest Love', is a 6 song project that offers fans of the singer-songwriter genre some real bang for their buck.
The album opens up with the title track to the project "Honest Love", a great song about some of the ways people break up with one another in dishonest or uncaring ways. He talks about an instance where a girl won't let him go even though things aren't going well between them. In another verse he talks about how this girl he was dating didn't even give him an explanation as to why she broke off their relationship after 9 month. He says in the chorus, "Honest love, don't last at all. Honest love will make you crawl. Honest love, makes me go out of my mind." Jessica Simpson should listen to this song, so she doesn't break off marriages via text message.
"Color Blue" is another great tune on Brian's new EP that I recommend. This song has great musical composition behind it and talks about getting one last chance to dance in the moonlight with your lover. It's a song that I'm sure many people will like.
Other key songs on this 'Honest Love' EP include: "Florida (Live)" and "SunShower".
Overall, I think Brian Mackey is a good artist and his 'Honest Love' EP is a solid release from an independent rocker. The only thing I'd say Brian's album is missing is a good uptempo acoustic song that rocks out. But even still, I'd recommend checking this artist out, for those who like the singer-songwriter sound.

BRIAN MACKEY: I defy main-stream. I’m the kind of guy that shows up to a gig without a guitar case, and just a guitar strapped around my back, I jump on stage and do my thing. I’m not really into being hip or what’s cool at the moment, I kind of just do what I feel, and if it makes other people feel in the process, then that’s a good thing, good or bad, happy or sad, doesn’t matter. (But I would like to make them feel good.)
RB: Your video for ‘Honest Love’ was just released and it carries a pretty heartfelt message. Can you take us back to the moment you started writing this song, what was the driving force behind this record?
BM: The song, ‘Honest Love’ came out of a conversation with myself, to try to make sense of what Love really means. The waiting, the wanting, the abandonment, the moving on, the changing of the heart, the mind, and still being able to sum it all up in one word, and putting Honest in front of it, which seems like a contradiction, but a beautiful one at that. The record was supposed to be a full-length album, but I didn’t really have the money to do it. So I made it an EP, and put together the songs that I truly wanted to get out there with the limited resources I had at the time. I just needed to get the song ‘Florida’ on there, because a lot of people came up to me at shows and said they could really relate to that song. So I figured if enough people told me they could relate, I felt it was a good fit for the album.

The title song, Honest Love, Color Blue and Bandage all explore this theme brilliantly. Out on the Road has a completely different vibe. It is more rockish and is reminiscent of some of the great songs of the 70s. My favorite would have to be Sun Shower. It’s one you find yourself singing along with immediately which, to me, means the song really connects with the listener. This one will be on my playlist for a long time to come. The final cut talks about a side of Florida that the Tourist Board doesn’t mention. I lived in Florida for 15 years and can attest to the truth told here.

They remind me of Lennon/McCartney compositions and I see nothing but great things ahead for Brian Mackey. Before I even begin to introduce this artist, I’m quite sure many have already been astounded by h...
Before I even begin to introduce this artist, I’m quite sure many have already been astounded by his music. He has performed in different locations both national and international, and we are even more delighted to add him on our list of inspired artists.
Brian Mackey writes wonderful lyrics and has fantastic vocals which blend in perfect harmony with the acoustics of his instruments. A boy who grew up in Florida, Brian didn’t actually have any formal training on playing the piano or guitar; yet listening to his bubbly music, truthfully, the thought of it would not even cross my mind because he really does a pretty good job in crafting his own music.
On that note, I will just unravel to you some of the things you can expect from Brian and his music because I actually think you’d be checking him out even before I wrap up this post. I’ve listened to his songs a few times already and every time I do, I always end up with this cheery tune playing over and over again in my head. His music which he describes as “manic romantic rock” sure does can reach to anyone who may have lost some sort of romance in their lives.
Why say that? Because you’d actually get a sense of happiness and a bit of a romance that you’d feel so much better after listening to each and every song. The sound is ultimately relaxing at the same time very refreshing — just right to make you want to listen to his voice over and over again.
Anyway, we’ve learned that our singer-songwriter Brian here has already released two EPs last year and have made a great impression to indie fans out there. But what greater news we have is that he’s just released a new CD entitled Honest Love which is also now available in iTunes. My personal fave from this CD would have to be “Honest Love” itself and “SunShower”; although, I do actually like the whole album because of the various emotions you can get from each song.
Watch out this November 25 for Brian Mackey’s music video for the new album. And on November 29, Brian will be playing live from Times Square 7th Ave on The Radio Show which is to be simulcast worldwide. That’s definitely a huge break for Brian!

Why are not these songs played on radio ? It is a big mystery.
To tell if an artist has talent, it’s easy. Few seconds are only necessary. This is the case with Brian Mackey.
Honest Love cd deserves success. From beginning to end, you enjoy each song. Authentic music is the word that comes to mind when I hear his music.The tune is sweet with heartfelt vocals. Hard to think otherwise. Sincerity is an important thing. Sometimes, some musicians forget but not Brian Mackey.
He is quite captivating. This is an artist that you must absolutely check out. The opener track Honest Love sets the tone for the rest of the EP. I love a lot Sun Shower my favorite song. All these songs showcase his powerful voice. Nobody can remain unmoved by this soulful music like
Color Blue, a sweet rock ballad that is excellent. Brian has also an incredible guitar playing in Out On the Road and Florida. My god, what a voice !!! It is beautiful. I’d like to hear much him on radio.

Tell us about yourself. Where are you from originally? How did you get to where you are today?
I ...Tell us about yourself. Where are you from originally? How did you get to where you are today?
I come form a small town in northern Florida on the Georgia boarder, Havana, a town that looks like it’s been thrown back to the 20’s or 30’s with tumbleweed blowin’ through the streets. I moved around a bit as a teenager and ended up in New York. I got a job washing the dishes and would play back-up guitar in bands at night, so I kind of put myself in places where I could work on what I really wanted to do.
Was music your first love, or did you dabble in other arts first?
Yes, definitely my first love. As a kid I would actually pretend I was sick all of the time, and stay home from school and listen to music in my room over and over again, and look at the credits, like who produced what, where was it recorded, just kind of funny looking back, since I was only 8 and I should’ve been in school, but I guess I had something else to learn.
Just as authors are influenced by other writers, musicians are often influenced by other musicians. Who are your musical influences?
Well from the beginning, I was really influenced by the Beatles and also 80’s rock and roll music, like Billy Joel, The Clash, Steve Miller, and a lot o 90’s artists too like, Nirvana. I play piano too, so I love Beethoven and a lot of classical composers too.
Even the greatest songwriters begin by playing other people’s music. Is there a song you’ve covered that you’re especially fond of? Is there a song you’d love to cover, but haven’t?
Hmm… that’s interesting. You know, I very rarely play covers, only because I feel nobody sings it better than the songwriter who sang it originally. But if there is one that I’d like to redo, it would be Piano Man on guitar.
Especially for newer artists, touring is an important part of building a career. Do you enjoy life on the road? What aspect of it most appeals to you?
When you’re on the road, you get to pick up the different flavors of the towns you’re in, the local happenings of the people who live there and it’s very inspirational. I can get a lot of songs written out of traveling. It’s something about driving into a new city or town from a long way, kind of like in the Wizard of Oz when you see the town or city from a distance, and you don’t know what to expect when you get there.
At some point in their careers almost every musician finds themselves collaborating with another. Who would you like to collaborate with, and why?
There are so many people I’d like to collaborate with. I’ve always admired Lionel Richie’s work because it’s so smooth and heartfelt. I think Jason Mraz would be fun to work because the music could take on a lot of different shapes.
Confession time: when you’re NOT working on your own stuff, what tunes are cranking out of your iPod? Give us your top five?
Well this always changes, but at the moment now that I’m looking at it, the theme song from Cats is here, (Just kidding)

Brian: It means t...Skope: What does it mean to be featured in a music community as diverse as Skope?
Brian: It means there is validation, from the obvious to the obscure. Side by side with artists from all genres, I really feel honored to be a part of it.
Skope: Would you say that the warm summer weather makes you more inspired to create music?
Brian: I want to say yes, but to be honest with you sometimes a cold, dark, rainy day brings out a happy song too.
Skope: What is the most exciting aspect of being an independent artist in 2010?
Brian: Freedom to be creative without the restraints of too many corporate dictates. If i want to sound like a garageband, I can, If I want to record in garageband… I can :)
Skope: What other bands & musicians are you listening to right now?
Brian: Well that’s a good question. I’m more like a drop-in listener. I come across a lot of stuff by accident all over the internet, and there are so many that it would take me an hour and a half to mention. But my roots are planted deeply in old classical music, infused with 80's pop with a tinge of what’s going on now.
Skope: Has the Internet leveled the playing field between indie & major label artists?
Brian: Most definitely. This write up is proof of it. There are a lot of people that may or may not get recognized. The one’s that do, are on the internet or some form of media that can be self directed and put in front of a listener they normally would have no contact with.
Skope: What is coming up for you and where can readers learn more about you?
Brian: I’m currently recording my next album, and am doing some touring. My next shows will be at Muzikfest in Bethlehem, PA, Akron Univeristy in Ohio, and Central Park in NYC. And of course this fine Write-Up in Skope, but you know this already by reading it, don’t you… :)

Brian is a singer/songwriter from Georgia, living in New York City. He has a style very reminiscent to the best solo performers with elements of James Taylor and Cat Stevens mixed in with the contemporary sound of today and creative lyricism. "My influences vary from 70's rock like James Taylor, Billy Joel and Cat Stevens to modern artists. I played the piano at a guy's house who managed Cat and brought him over to America. He actually worked with Paul McCartney & Wings."
The modern balances nicely with the classics, as Brian also enjoys some of the same contemporary artists as many students. "I like Jason Mraz a lot and Jason Reeves is great. James Morrison also is very talented."
Brian's first interest in music has humble roots. "Just singing in the bath tub," he says. The second-hand experience of his mother being in showbiz engrained a desire in Brian to entertain, and his nomadic spirit fits in perfectly with the lifestyle of a touring musician. "I like to travel, I love to get out and meet people. I don't feel normal unless I am meeting people and on the move. I feel like I am wasting time when not on the move. I just love to go out and play. "

He has released two EP’s: ‘Brian Mackey EP 2009’ and ‘Feng Shui for Slobs,’ both of which can be found on iTunes. His simplistic songs cut to the core, without any of the fluff and over-production found in most singer-songwriters.
Brian Mackey lives in NYC, but has played all over from Nashville, TN to Italy. On top of the numerous places he has taken his music physically, one of his singles ‘Painted Red,’ was featured on The Disney Channel’s television show ‘Naturally Sadie.’ His music caught the attention of producer Ron Dante (Neil Diamond, Barry Manilow) who then motivated Ted Pearlman (Bob Dylan) to join him in recording Brian.
Brian Mackey’s music isn’t just romantic, there is some humor to be found in his songs like the alt-rock track ‘I Cant Dance’ on the ‘Brian Mackey EP 2009,’ and the acoustic band-based ‘Radio’ where Mackey name drop’s all the over played music of our time.

What is your musical background?
I’m a huge classical music fan, mostly piano music from tortured composers.
I don’t have any formal training on any instrument, but piano and guitar are what I’m most fluent in.
How would you describe your music?
Manic romantic rock
I read somewhere that at a young age you sat down at a piano and played John Lennon. Who introduced you to music back then and do you think it shaped you as a songwriter?
I got a hold of some old cassettes and records, and faked illnesses from, “I can’t go to the bathroom” to “If I stand up I’ll faint” kind-of-stuff to stay home from school. I locked myself in the room and played it over and over until I learned it. I actually thought I was John Lennon for the longest time.
When did you start writing your own songs and why?
Well I started writing little songs about age 8 that kind of sounded like other songs and I would just put my own words to them. Like I heard “A Rhinestone Cowboy” on an AM oldies radio show, and changed the lyrics to a song for my cat: “Like a rhinestone kitty, selling turds at a broken-down litter box rodeo”… I was in counseling shortly thereafter. No lie.
How was it working with Ron Dante and Ted Perlman? Did you gain a lot of knowledge from them?
Truly an eye-opening experience to work with such iconic producers, and I gained some knowledge, but more of a sense of what I can and cannot do.
What is your songwriting process? (Lyrics before music? How you come up with melodies?)
This is an interesting one that a lot of people have asked me. Sometimes I’ll just dream something, melody, lyrics, everything together and its good, and I want to wake up, but I don’t want to wake up too fast because I want to finish the song. But that only happens about 10% of the time, the other 90% is me pounding some chords out on the guitar or piano and just kind of singing until something makes sense. Or in some cases, doesn’t make sense, but that’s okay too.
Who have you shared the stage with?
A lot of singer/songwriters, and bands. I opened up for 3 Doors Down at a small club in NJ. A band called, Brother Kane on their way down at a balloon festival, shared the stage with Fountains of Wayne, and a bunch of other bands and singers.
When you play live, how do you try and connect with people who have never heard you?
I try to make them laugh. Because if you make them laugh, you have their ears. And if you have their ears, you can really touch them in places because they are letting you in at that point. And if you can’t make them laugh, eh. Never mind, you’ll always make them laugh.
We have heard that your music was featured on the
Disney and Family Channel which is a huge accomplishment. Did it produce CD sales/exposure?
You know, at the time it aired on the Disney Channel, I didn’t have a TV or a way to really watch it. I just kind of heard from family members and friends. I didn’t really receive much in the way of financial gain from it, but I definitely got the interest from other producers and other licensing opportunities because of it which was definitely worth it.
What is next for you?
Well I was just approached by 2 licensing companies for opportunities for placement in 2 separate major motion pictures which I can disclose after the ink has dried.
Have you toured on the road? If so, what is a great story that you would like to share with our audience?
Yes. I played a lot of small towns, and some overseas stuff. When I was in Italy, I rode the train to another city and met some Canadians and we got really drunk on the train (because the staff gives you free wine) and we all fell asleep leaning on each other. I missed my stop and in turn I was late for a show. So I guess the moral of the story is never go to Italy and befriend Canadians because you both feel like you’re long lost brothers so you drink to the fact you are in Italy, you fall asleep and almost miss a show. Fun, but a bad idea.

After giving his RED CD a listen, you too may forget all the bullshit that consumes your life and just live on loving. With a power rock sound like Coldplay and Oasis, and a voice that reminds one of James Blunt, I find it hard to believe that Brian Mackey isn’t heard on major radio.
The opener to this stellar 4-track disc “Painted Red” tells us of Brian’s love. His Love makes his world a little bit easier to deal with and how no matter what the circumstances, his Love will endure. Something everyone wants, everlasting love and companionship. “Come Out Of The House” speaks of Love also but it in different sense. Like John Cusack in Say Anything, Brian Mackey is outside his lovers house willing her to come with him and leave another “after he goes to bed” because their Love is special and will last.
As a songwriter myself, I relate to Brian Mackey in a very special way. There’s nothing more satisfying than writing a Love song. It’s the perfect way to express ones uninterrupted thoughts towards another. Even if that special someone never hears the words you’ve written for him or her, the songwriter feels a sense of completion. In other words, it’s a great way to get over someone. You’d be surprised that these love songs are universal and that they can relate to everyone and every situation.
This is an easy listen that will leave you singing Brian Mackey’s hooks all day long, and then some. Give Brian Mackey a listen.

What made you pick up music?
They say music soothes the savage beast, hearing a song on the radio and singing along to it would quiet the turmoil and make everything alright.
Tell us something about yourself and your music that we don't know about.
I don't really listen to rock music, or anything popluar. I prefer classical music, and when my car radio is working, usually a classical station comes in.
What is the best thing you have accomplished as a musician?
I think the best thing I've accomplished is working with Ron Perlman, Bob Dylan's guitar player. Ron is an amazing musician, and to get to record with him was really an eye-opener. Watching him play the guitar makes you say, 'Wow that's how you play it'.
Which celebrity star would you date?
That's a really good question. I probably wouldn't date a celebrity. I would probably end up with a waitress at Ihop. Probably Anna Paquin from True Blood. She seems nice. At least to vampires anyway.
What do you see yourself doing 5 years down the road?
Five years down the road, well I hope we are still a planet by then...And if the earth is still spinning, I hope I'm living somewhere in a warm climate near the beach.
