AMY VAN DOREN
Amy Van Doren believes in a hands-on approach. Unlike many a propped up pop princess of today, she writes, produces and even mixes her songs, and plays several instruments including guitar, sitar, thumbi, harmonium, and most recently, the keys. A fascinating smorgasbord, Van Doren is an ardent animal lover on the one hand, with a deeply mystical side, thanks to her shamanistic family roots; on the other hand, there's all the glitz and glam of a rockstar, and a high-fashion vibe owing to her work as a model. Her lyrics too run the gamut, from no-holds-barred social commentary to poignant heartbreak and her distinctive vocals go from in-your-face, to seductively swampy, to girlishly simple, with some of her more intimate
songs revealing a depth far beyond her years. Her song "Being Barbie", for instance, is a sardonic take on the abnormal fixations of the beauty business, based on her own observations and experiences. According to Amy, "The media has totally brainwashed us into believing that as females we're only valuable if we look and act a certain way. It's great that we have the freedom to be sexy, but I don't think it's cool to reduce us to toys... or men to meal tickets, for that matter. And of course, the two seem to go together." The exotic beauty has been a model for leading brands such as Adidas, Lierac, Versace, J Crew, etc, and her images have appeared in Max, Bazaar, and Marie Claire among other publications.
Described as "the modern day Patsy Cline" by bestselling author Elaine Dundy, Amy counts John Lennon, Bono and Prince among her greatest inspirations. A self-described feminist, she is particularly sensitive to the plight of women and children in the third world, especially during war. Her hard hitting song "RAPE" based on a poem she wrote for a class based on an actual incident in 2005 involving a 13 year old Iraqi girl who was raped and killed.
Inspired by Amy's look, music and social consciousness, renowned artist Ron Lukas is currently creating a graphic novel titled Chitown Milly where the main protagonist is based on Amy and the soundtrack to the animated film based on the graphic novel will feature Amy's music.
Ambidextrous, Amy writes with both hands but can only play guitar left-handed. Her tracks feature some of the most sought after session players, engineers and producers in the business including, Bob Glaub, James Lugo (American idol), Ronan Chris Murphy, Rhythm D (Bone Thugs n Harmony, NWA), Dean Pleasants, Doc Bob Clarence (Michael Jackson, The Isley Brothers, Ray J) and Rod Castro . Though a true blue rocker, Amy loves to genre blend. A recent example of this is her track "Epiphany' which was co-produced by gangsta rap icon Rhythm D (Bone Thugz n Harmony, NWA, Eazy E). She also recently won a Sonicbids.com contest where the first prize is an opportunity to work with legendary rock producer Ron Nevison (Led Zepelin, Heart, Jefferson Starship, etc.) so some exciting collaborations are in the works!
