“In Jerusalem
there is a sky dispersed in people.
She protects us, we protect her,
and we carry her on our shoulders,
if the times grow too cruel for her moons…
In Jerusalem
there’s a scent compounding Babel and India,
in the perfume market by the oil quarter,
a scent that, by God,
has a language.
You’d understand it if you listened.
And when they throw their tear gas,
it says: never mind,
And when the gas has dispersed,
it says: you see?”
Tamim Al-Barghouti, Fil Quds (In Jerusalem)
Translated by Tasnim Qutait
*****
HISTORY
This May marks the 63rd anniversary of the Nakba (Arabic for "catastrophe") in Palestine in 1948 when over
935,000 Palestinians (85% of the indigenous population of Palestine at that time) were forced off their land,
in some cases at gunpoint, in other cases through massacres or threats of massacres like the massacre at
Deir Yassin. As a result, 530 of an estimated 550 total villages were completely destroyed or depopulated.
"Israel" was founded on the racist ideology of zionism. It has followed the expansionist and genocidal logic of
white supremacy and colonialism for over sixty years. Today, the genocide in Palestine continues: from the
planned demolition of Palestinian homes in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of occupied Al Quds (Jerusalem)
to the attacks by Zionist settlers on Palestinian farmers in the Qana valley to the continued siege of the people
of Gaza-- deprived of food, water, electricity, and medicine-- to the mass detention of over 11,000 Palestinian

On Saturday, May 14th, New York City Community Garden Coalition (NYCCGC) will present its 2011 Community Gardeners Forum. This year’s event will be youth-driven, focusing on the talent and potential being displayed by youth in gardens and greening programs across New York City. This free event will feature interactive workshops, lively discussions, and live entertainment.
Our keynote speaker this year is Owen Taylor of Just Food. Owen has worked and supported both adults and youth extensively in programming and training; Just Food works to increase access to fresh, healthy, locally-grown food in NYC and to support the family farms and urban gardens that grow it. Owen will be joined onstage by Jazzmin Lyttle-Hylton, Miss Teen Earth Westchester, as they welcome representatives from several stand-out youth programs for a panel discussion.
Workshops on topics ranging from youth empowerment to school gardens will be offered – more details coming soon as the planning committee continues its outreach efforts to coordinate what will undoubtedly be the most energetic and exciting Forum yet!
The Forum’s theme is in alignment with NYCCGC’s mission this year to cultivate the next generation of garden leaders. To this end, the deadline for applications to its Summer Leadership Retreat has been extended – final applications will be accepted at the event. Full scholarships are available for this amazing week at a Vermont farm – all expenses paid!

Back to the Roots Tour with Evan Greer all day workshops evening performances
Come out of your burrows for these workshops facilitated by musicians/ activists Evan Greer, queer folk-punk singer, and spiritchild, black & Puerto Rican hip hop artist! Though their music is radically different in style, they share a common commitment to using their art as a tool to support grassroots struggles for change.
LGBTQ Liberation & Environmental Justice
3-4:15pm, Womyn's Resource Center (non-womyn welcome!)
We’ll discus...s the root causes of homophobia, heterosexism, and transphobia, and how these injustices have historically related to racism, colonization, and environmental destruction. Comparisons will be drawn between mainstream campaigns for “gay rights” and “green living” and grassroots struggles for environmental justice and queer liberation.
Hip Hop Autonomy & the Industry
4:30-5:45pm, WRC
This workshop focuses on creative alternatives to the music industry and how hip hop is expressed as a culture. Connections are made to the Zapatista caracoles model as a way of life and community. Concrete examples of functioning artist networks that support social justice, such as Movement in Motion International, will be discussed. The development of social networks and the importance of alternative media will also be presented.

Evan Greer is a radical gender queer singer/songwriter, parent, community organizer and workshop-facilitator based in Boston, MA. Wielding an arsenal of fiercely radical acoustic songs that vary in style from pop-punk poetry to foot-stompin’ bluegrass singalongs, Evan has shared stages with artists as musically diverse as Pete Seeger and Immortal Technique.
Evan travels relentlessly by foot, veggie-oil bus, car, subway train, airplane, and bicycle. In 2009 (s)he rode 1600+ pedalpowered miles around Florida during the Respect Yer Mama Bicycle Tour with Shannon Murray, pulling a guitar in a bike-trailer. Evan is a founding member of the Riot-Folk! Collective, an innovative group of young radical musicians who work together to use music as a tool for social change. (S)he has spent time as a relief worker in New Orleans, a street medic at the G8 protests in Scotland, and has been a youth and community organizer in the Boston-area since high school.
spiritchild is the Rhythmic Poet of Hip Hop fusion band Mental Notes, founder & chair of Movement In Motion Artist & Activist Collective and the Creative Consultant for Eyes Infinite Films. Armed with their unique signature sound, New York City’s original hip-hop ensemble Mental Notes has been attracting diverse audiences for over a decade. Their eclectic fusion of old school hip-hop, funk, electronica, jazz and acid rock continues to break the boundaries of the New York live music scene. spiritchild has as been privileged to work with revolutionary spoken word activists The Last Poets as well as Brooklyn’s Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra.
As the founder and chair of Movement In Motion, an international artist and activist collective that uses art and music to support movements for liberation, spiritchild has offered workshop and performances at high schools, detention facilities, universities, clubs, protests, and community centers in cities around the world. His latest album, Dark Matters, is a double-disc release that feature producers from multiple different countries and notable artists like Grammy Award Winning Maya Azucena and Not4Profit of Ricanstruction.

spiritchild will close out rally at union square and help set the pace for the march to folley square around 130pm. see you there. Join the United Palestine Solidarity Contingent at the April 9 Anti-War March/Rally in NYC! (Gather at 18th St. and Park Avenue So. at noon) On April 9 in New York City, the United National Anti-War Committee (UNAC) is organizing an anti-war march and rally to demand an end to all US wars and occupationsand an end to all US aid to Israel. Our movement should view the occupation of Palestine, and the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, as intrinsically linked. The US government, which is directly occupying the latter two countries, also props up the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land, funding and arming apartheid Israel to the tune of three billion dollars a year. We should keep in mind that the same federal government that has spied on and harassed anti-war activists for a decade has also targeted Palestine solidarity activists. UNAC has clearly and unequivocally condemned the recent FBI raids, and has also consistently put confronting Islamophobia and anti-Arab racism at the center of its organizing. For this reason, our participation in these marches as Palestine solidarity activists is critical: the public discourse is changing and we have a chance to come out in droves, linking together these issues and building a powerful movement that challenges war, racism and occupation, from Iraq to Palestine. Over 500 endorsers include Ali Abunimah, Mazin Qumsiyeh, Ann Wright, Ilan Pappe, US Palestinian Community Network, Al-Awda NY, Code Pink, Palestine Right of Return Coalition, Boston Coalition for Palestinian Rights, SJPs from many campuses, Middle East Crisis Committee, Middle East Childrens Alliance, and many others. With this in mind,UNAC is calling for a United Palestine Solidarity Contingent for the march. Such a contingent will strengthen our message of support for Palestinian self-determination. Furthermore, it represents a great networking opportunity for Palestine solidarity activists.BDS leader Omar Barghouti will be speaking at the rally, and will be marching with the contingent.

SCHÖNER WOHNEN
Eine Tanzproduktion des Ensembles der HipHop Academy Hamburg
Künstlerische Leitung: Niels ‚Storm’ Robitzky
Mit: Guido Höper (Beatbox), Stefan Schönfeldt (Visuals), Emefa Egblomasse, Can Gülec, Franklyn Kakyire, Daniel Marques (Tanz), Cem ‚Cemo’ Arslan, Tobias ‚T.u.n.e.’ Blanck (Rap)
