Biography

Growing up performing in various acts in the Welland/St. Catharines punk/hardcore scene Adam (aka The First Seed) picked up the energy and raw emotion of the passion that is expressed in that music and combined it with his love for abrasive and subtle electronic sonorities. Composing and performing with elements of chance and randomness the sound reflects of the chaos of the times. Around two years ago Adam started collaborating with local underground rock/hardcore legend BingeNinja which recently culminated in the release of their album: Kissing At Summer Camp, mid December of 2011. The duo has been playing shows to receptive audiences and gaining momentum ever since.

  Kissing At Summer Camp brings together underground hardcore heavy weights BingeNinja and The First Seed to realize a fusion between hard rock, electronic music and pop in a unique and diverse collection of tracks composed over the last 2 years mostly at The First Seed's home studio in Toronto. Drawing on their wide range of influences and past musical projects, each track on the album has an individual sound. The album opens with the bouncy feel good pop dance rock of "Sub Sufficient" into the melodic electronic hip hop soul of "Over Aided" before delving into heavier territory with the power pop grime of "Amazing". "One More Binge" explores digital grunge metal, while "Last Man Standing" takes that darkness a step further before the cyber punk thrash grindcore of "You're The Criminal" explodes through the speakers. "Fuck Music" (ft. Ex Pig Knives) delves deep into hardcore death techno territory before the slow dirge of "Tell Her That You Love Her"'s droning dubstep doom metal shatters all expectations what a love song should sound like. From there, a step away from the brutal electronic insanity, the album closes with the organic heart felt piano based ballad "A Start" as yet another range of BingeNinja's engaging and hauntingly ethereal vocals carry you to intriguingly strange but familiar melodic territory.
  
  After meeting at a showcase for the infamous underground digital hardcore label DTrash Records, to which both The First Seed and BingeNinja's side project No Brigade were signed, the two became fast friends and almost immediately started discussing collaborating on tracks. The two artists shared a common vision of an electronic/rock crossover that would be accessible to a wider audience than the small group of loyal breakcore fans that their current projects appealed to. "One More Binge" was the first track to come out of the collaboration, but it wasn't until "Amazing" and "Over Aided" that the cutting edge, refreshingly eclectic project started to gain momentum. Upon performing the works in progress out at shows the two realized they were onto something. As the compositions continued to come together BingeNinja was also collaborating with musician friend Cyrus Bapooji on piano and approached The First Seed to record the ideas and fill out the tracks with synthesized elements and mixing tricks. By the summer of 2011 it became apparent that the two tracks with Cyrus (Sub Sufficient and A Start) perfectly bookended the album. Almost with surprise, the two discovered that with all 9 tracks lined up they had a coherent album and musical statement they could get behind. With the artistic talent of Braden Labonte realizing BingeNinja's cover concept of the fleeting innocence of young love and Doug Romanow's mastering skills, the album was released online to great reception on 12/13/2011. BingeNinja and The First Seed have been performing the tracks live as often as possible and are lining up tours for 2012 as videos for Kissing at Summer Camp are currently being edited. The two artists continue to play shows together in support of "Kissing At Summer Camp" and collaborate on tracks for future releases.
  
  With comparisons ranging from NIN to Atari Teenage Riot and Bjork to Beck the multi-hybrid musical stylings of the duo express the multitude of musical influences which were drawn upon to create the record. While ultimately only trying to satisfy their own ideals they inadvertently created an album with something for everyone. The album is available for free download at full quality on both BingeNinja and The First Seed's sites respectively and hand stamped slim case CDRs with cover insert and lyrics are available at shows.

  D-Trash has been the go-to label for Digital Hardcore artists, arguably more influential than even A...D-Trash has been the go-to label for Digital Hardcore artists, arguably more influential than even Atari Teenage Riot's own Digital Hardcore Recordings. The First Seed is a newer group with heavy elements of breakcore, glitch, and noise. Free Prostitute strikes me as the "single" if there is one, with the rest of the album at varying levels of increased weirdness (not that Free Prostitute is particularly tame). I haven't heard anything else by the artist, but I'm liking what I'm hearing here a lot.

  I think I now know what an S&M relationship feels like on the receiving end. I
  feel violated. But I guess thats the point. I suspected what I was getting
  into.
  It was full out aural assault for all involved as the First Seed, aka Adam
  Gabourie, presented his first live Toronto set Friday, March 24, at the
  Gladstone Art Bar. Self described as breakcore or speedcore beats, I think
  it can be more accurately characterized as bloody violent technical meltdown.
  With about as much structure as an epileptic fit, Gabourie put the very concept
  of music to the test, stretching its limits almost beyond recognition.
  The result is destructive, abusive, and surprisingly enthralling. Brutal but
  appealing, Gabourie is an aural dominatrix. The beats are frantic and
  intrusive.
  As my girlfriend shouted above his set, This shits fuckin nuts, but its
  certainly the soundtrack to society. Pretty profound for someone on her fourth
  martini.
  After the show, I had the opportunity to ask the artist if her opinion was as
  insightful as I gave it credit. Turns out she knew what she was talking about.
  This music is a reflection of society at this state in time, Gabourie told me
  over the phone. You cant listen to more than one song on the radio without
  having a commercial, you cant watch a show without being interrupted by a
  commercial, we rarely listen to a full song were the ADD generation, and
  this is what the music reflects, he told me.
  Eschewing the conventional and his formal musical training in Boston, Gabourie
  incorporates found noise, glitch, and modulated sounds into a cyber-thrash
  orgy.
  I used to do ambient music, sound design, soundscapes sort of like Brian Eno
  or the minimalists, but I found I got a better reaction by presenting more
  active music, he told me. Although at first a lot of people didnt get where
  I was coming from, he gradually incorporated into the Boston music scene,
  playing under the name DMNZ and continuing to experiment with what could
  constitute a composition.
  This led Gabourie to produce the First Seed and his particular brand of barely
  organized sonic chaos. The sound reflects the incessant, fragmented technical
  input characteristic of life in the information age, underlined by a pervasive
  cultural ethos of violence. As Gabourie explained, were coming into a violent
  era and you cant get away from it. Western commercial capitalism, he
  lamented, is a system of overt and covert coercion, domestically and
  internationally. Oh God, he trailed off mid sentence, what else gets me
  going
  Indeed, this is music with a message, not a melody. And while its not exactly
  something youd want to listen to with dinner, the live performance is a shot
  of raw adrenaline. A true product of the ADD generation, the First Seed rips
  on the decks or key boards; or whatever it was he was thrashing away on.
  Unlike some DJs and other practitioners of organized sound, Gabourie
  actively engages the audience as he tears out his beats, pumping the air,
  shaking like a junky, and ratcheting up the tension as the dancefloor starts to
  boil with twitching art students.
  As he told me, Im a performer instead of a DJ I perform like a rocker instead
  of just sitting behind the laptop like Im cruising the Internet. Its a
  technique that serves him well.
  I left the Gladstone with my ears rining. I think my brains bleeding, my
  friend told me as we walked east on Queen Street. Behind us we could hear the
  next act setting up, a two-person rendition of highlights from Commando, the
  1985 Schwarzenegger film. Referred to in the program as a dissertation on US
  foreign policy between 1980 to 1988, its apparently comprised predominantly
  of Arnolds one-liners. So yeah: Its a weird scene. But these beats arent
  just crazy; theyre also disturbingly accurate social commentary. Currently

Setlist

playing anywhere from 20 mins to an hour. The First Seed's sets can range from all out electronic metal and grindcore to ambient soundscapes to left field jungle/breakcore dancefloor bangers and often all of the above. More often these days sets run around 30 mins with BingeNinja on the mic and The First Seed doing backing vocals and running the beats with one straight signal through the system and an effected channel through amplifiers.
