Biography
Nine Even was formed in late 2001 as a vehicle for the songs of founder Jake Modica, and the other members of the band. They have released 1 LP (Seamsan Over.), 4 EPs (MT Space, Helm, stop...caution...go!, Season of the Vortex), 1 single (BeCause Care Remains), and are currently working on 2 full LPs (Illuna Vega/Cinema & Noredust). They have played many shows on the Western side of the US, and have also journeyed cross country to the East Coast while promoting thier 2nd EP "Helm".
It all started with Jake Modica’s desire to bring to life the musical ideas he had been working on, with other people who shared his vision of not being restricted to following the trends of the day, or taking influence from only one area or genre of music to create new things. Many influences crept into the sound he was hearing, everything from the psychedelic rants, industrial pop, menace & light late '90s harder alternative music, the anthemic sweep/progressive tests of '80s stadium rock, and the stubborn eclecticism/hooky experimentation more below the radar cult bands. Immediately this got an amazing response as a unique brand of heavy alternative music, which they chose to call Nine Even. Things started out great for the band, but they did not have all the pieces together yet as they wanted them. In the beginning they played mostly with more metal type bands, as a holdover from their days playing more in that genre with their previous bands. They soldiered on, bringing in fans as they went, putting the rest of the puzzle together.
In late 2006, they decided that they must record some of their catalog so the outside world would finally get the chance to hear what the regional Northern California inner circle had now been listening to for years of demos, and live performances. They decided to document all parts of the journey up to this point, early live standards, crowd favorites, and some newer songs as well to show what they were doing in the now. They recorded in Oakland, CA at Sharkbite Studios. Seamsan Over. , (Seamsan is a Gaelic word for hesitation, so the title means “hesitation over period”) was released in 2008. Many said they haven’t heard a band like this before. It might be because some of the elements Nine Even has brought to bear have been deleted from the charts over the years, like deconstructing old formulas to build something new. Maybe it’s because, like the band themselves, the songs grow onto people over time and bring up emotions from their own lives. Whatever the reasons, Nine Even are here to stay, and they continue to reach out to as many people with their music as possible.
