It is Throwing Gravity and they are an alternative rock band with a Nashville edge that comes together beautifully. These guys just finished up a tour with another one of my favorite bands, 12 Stones and have been sharing the stage with other greats like My Darkest Days, Chevelle, Red and Evans Blue. Throwing Gravity was in great company with those bands and I am also sure gained many new fans with their own music.
Their single, “Here we Go Again” has had multiple placements with NHL, MLB, and TNA Wrestling and next on their list is “The Inside”. It is no wonder since both songs send out the good vibe and are energy driven. The bass lines on The Inside are awesome. Here is their official video for “Here We Go Again” which will have you ready to face your battles.
Their whole album, “It’s Not the End”, has such a great all around alternative rock sound with several power ballads that remind me of old Tesla and Mr. Big with the amazing vocals. The great thing is that these guys have their own unique sound and cannot be placed into one area. You get some great Nashville Rock sound from them and then you can get some great Alternative sound from them. ”Candlelight” is a alternative rock song and reminds me of Duran Duran with a blend of early Collective Soul. These guys are ready to pull you in to their circle with their music. Take a listen and tell me what you think. I am keeping them on my playlist and I am sure you will to. So go out and enjoy the new music!
Throwing Gravity is Nick James on Lead Vocals and Guitar, Adam Gooch on Lead Guitar, Sam Hindmarsh on Bass and Backing Vocals and Eric Bice on Drums.

Throwing Gravity – Breaking Out

Do you even know what you are getting yourself into? Sitting with founding member Nick James from Throwing Gravity, one ponders the path he has taken and continues to take for the love of his music. James is the only original member left in the band, having put out their last album a year ago called, It’s Not the End. Like so many artists today, Throwing Gravity had to self publish their latest album, with help from the fans. With websites like Kickstarter.com, bands have the ability to put together a grassroots effort in order to collect the funds from their fans to bring out an album. Getting signed by a record label was something that Throwing Gravity had been through, and it was an adventure that ended badly. Playing around 100 shows the past year has kept this upstart band on the verge of breaking through to the masses. James keeps the pulse of the band on an even keel, despite the fact that as he put it, “It is tougher to get live gigs today that actually pay, than to sell albums, but the two go hand in hand.”
Throwing Gravity’s sound follows the same genre as Nickelback and James delivers rock solid vocals and a rough cutting edge style to his music that is starting to get them noticed by more and more fans. The best thing for fans and artists is putting a tour together of about four bands. Since Throwing Gravity is a self published band at this point, touring is something else that is self published. They no longer have the support of a label, not like a label really supports bands anymore anyway, but James has to use his own money to fund a tour or even a one time show for the band. The hard part is having to decide do you take a gig that might pay you a thousand bucks, but the cost will be twelve hundred to play the show, or losing two hundred bucks? Many of you reading this might be shocked to know that many artists like Throwing Gravity actually do lose money when they tour. If they can get three more bands together, that will really cut back on the expenses and help them pull in more fans. In listening to the band’s album, It’s Not The End, you can just feel the effort and love James puts into his music.
For Throwing Gravity and Nick James money and fame are a by-product of the love James has for his music. These are the bands that will make it through the tough times in the music industry today, because they will continue to carry forward and never stop learning and growing as artists. Throwing Gravity comes out strong on the first song of the album, Circles. It won’t take fans of TNA (total non-stop action) wrestling long to know the fourth tune, The Inside, as it was picked as the theme song for the May 13th PPV event. But the highlight of the album is their biggest and most popular hit, Here we go Again. Fans will be excited to know that Throwing Gravity are going back into the studio to release another album in 2013.

“An Interview with Nick James of Throwing Gravity” (By Groovey) Nashville’s Throwing Gravity’s sound...“An Interview with Nick James of Throwing Gravity” (By Groovey) Nashville’s Throwing Gravity’s sound is total kick ass rock and their tunes are making moves up the charts and into the world’s playlists. On their latest album It’s Not The End Throwing Gravity worked with mega-talents Josh Abraham (Linkin Park, 30 Seconds to Mars, Velvet Revolver) and Ryan Williams (Paramore, Stone Temple Pilots, Rage Against The Machine) they have also toured with 12 Stones, Chevelle, Red and many more. I spoke with Throwing Gravity’s vocalist Nick James about throwing the gravity and where it’s all going to land.
How did the sound of Throwing Gravity develop and all come together?
Nick James: Basically rock has always been my first and foremost. I grew up listening to Journey, Boston and Led Zeppelin and the older rock bands. My roots are always going to be the rock. I’m from Louisiana so I got a taste of the blues too and I’m Southern so there’s a southern sound in there too. I like to write those catchy hooks. I don’t think I could ever get away from those hooks. The sound is more along the lines of a Daughtry, Goo Goo Dolls and Tonic. A lot of people are saying we are the Tonic of our time. I don’t know what that means but I love Tonic. We take some risks but it’s not too hard, it’s not active rock or metal, it’s very melodic. There are a lot of ballads. I tried my best to not do ballads and I end up doing ballads. (Laughs) I don’t know how not to.
If ballads are coming naturally, man, then that’s what’s real to you.
Nick James: I guess so. I was talking to someone the other day and I was saying how I automatically put everything in 6/8 and that’s just how my brain thinks.
You worked with an impressive list of people on the last album, how are you choosing who you collaborate with?
Nick James: It all just came along and just knowing people throughout the years like John King did most of this record and he is one of my good friends now and I have been working with him since we were called The Rust in the beginning and that was back in 2007. So I’ve been working with him for a long time and along the way meeting guys like Ryan Williams and Josh Abraham. So just making good contacts and staying in contact. It’s been exciting; I can tell you that, to have a few things I can scratch off my bucket list especially in the music world.
If everyone is friends in the studio are you concerned that you aren’t being pushed or challenged to produce the best you can?
Nick James: Luckily I work with people that have always understood the same thing and thought the way that I do. When it comes to what we are going to do, which is recording a record, we are not necessarily going to turn that switch off because obviously we are friends still and we’re having fun doing this but luckily I have people who I work with that understand where the boundaries are. Where things shouldn’t cross and where they should cross. I have been fortunate enough to be paired up with a lot of those people. Especially John, me and him butt heads a lot when it comes to music but it always comes out on the right side. There’s never any fights or anything crazy but there are multiple sounds bites of me saying stuff. There’s a swear log at the end of every song if that makes sense. (Laughs)
Did you ever run into, “Aww dude, that just sucks, we gotta drop it on the floor right now.”?
Nick James: Yeah, that happened. (Laughs) That happens quite a bit. But we’re taken the single “Here We Go Again” which used to be called “Broken” and we took that song, and it literally was a piece of crap, and I will say that because I think it was a piece of crap on the original Rust record. I was like, “John, this thing has potential and we have to do something with it.” So we ended up transforming that song and the only thing that is the same on that song is the bridge. It’s a whole brand new song. That was a challenge to take a song that actually was a piece of crap and turn it into something that is more or less manageable. It’s fun doing that stuff though. It’s a lot of fun. I even try to do that with some of my older stuff. Man, I got so many songs that are crap but, “Maybe that little part right there I can use it.” You know? But then I end up saying, “No, it’s pretty crap.” (Laughs)
It’s Not The End was released last year. Have you been writing for the next album?
Nick James: Yeah, totally in our down time I’m still writing right now. You hit those moment s where you just spit out music and about three weeks ago I did four songs in three days. Just bam. We’re just trying to get stuff ready to make something new and release it this coming summer. Around May or something like that. We’re in the writing phase, not recording yet, but writing for sure.
What’s coming up next for you guys?
Nick James: Tour wise it looks like we’re going out with Royal Bliss starting on November 5th for a two week run and maybe a little bit longer but we will have to see on that. It’s going to be Midwest and up north; Wisconsin and some East coast probably some of that stuff too. Besides that just check out all our socials cuz we’re always on them and love to chat.

Review and Interview with Throwing Gravity

The band’s full-length release, It’s Not The End, is a testament to that genius. The Nashville, Tennessee based band led by vocalist/guitarist Nick James, along with guitarist Adam Gooch, bassist Sam Hindmarsh and drummer Eric Bice have produced a well-rounded album, complete with fist-pumping rockers, mid-tempo ear candy and love happy ballads. Regardless of the given song’s tempo, each song contains emotional honesty, sonic depth and enough variety to make the entire body of work worth a listen from start to finish.
With a high-quality album to share with the rest of the rock community, the band has hit the road in true rock-n-roll fashion for most of 2012 with the remaining two calendar months of the year coming up being no different. As the band prepares to hit the road once again, Rock Revolt spoke with the leader of Throwing Gravity, Nick James about the band’s album, touring and all other things rock-n-roll.

Already, they’ve been featured on Kings of A&R, had a #1 hit song on iHeartRadio for four months as well as multiple placements with NHL, MLB, and TNA Wrestling with their song “Here We Go Again.” The band has also shared the stage with the likes of Chevelle, Red, My Darkest Days, Evans | Blue and loads more that you will learn about later. Throwing Gravity recently finished up a tour with 12 Stones and share with us a hilarious prank that was pulled on their stage buddies…
We’re excited to welcome bassist and vocalist Sam Hindmarsh to GuitarTrump. First off, thanks so much for taking the time to interview with us. I know that you’re very busy, so let’s get right to it. It’s my understanding that you guys are a fairly new band and have only been together for a few years. For those who are just learning about you, would you mind telling us a little bit about who Throwing Gravity is and how you guys formed?
Let me start off by saying thank you as well for letting us talk with you about our band! Throwing Gravity kind of grew from a band known as the The Rust which got its start around 2008. About three years ago the band changed their name due to legal conflictions with an 80's band that had been called the same thing. TG in it’s current form has only been together about a year due to the inevitable lineup changes that happen with bands, but everyone is awesome at what they do and its been almost a fresh start really. Everyone has kind of locked in now since we have been pushing really hard and as anyone who has seen a show can attest to, when we get on stage we put on a show!
It’s Not The End is the current album, and is a collection of really great songs. Can you tell us a bit about it?
It’s Not The End is just a straight rocking solid record from front to back. Every song takes you on a bit of a journey and kind of leads into the next. It has its peaks and valleys as far as the up-tempo songs balanced by the more ballad-type songs, so it really flows as a whole. You know in today’s music industry it has kind of moved from people grabbing a whole record to more of just downloading a few singles here and there. It was definitely our goal to make the record a complete body of work so you could pop it in or load it up on your iTunes, press play and never have to skip to the next song. We think we really accomplished that here, which kind of makes it really hard to pick which songs to make our “singles” but we don’t mind having problems like that.
You guys have an incredible song on this album called Here We Go Again that was featured in TNA Wrestling and stayed at #1 on iHeartRadio for four months. What’s the backstory on this one, and what about it do you feel resonates with fans so well?
It is just a really relatable story of boy meets girl, boy and girl have issues, boy powers through/digs deep and overcomes. I mean, you can flip it around anyway you want to. It still has that fundamental vibe of overcoming something and standing your ground. I really think that is a big reason so many people can feed off the energy of that song. Plus, it just has that driving almost aggressive feel to it…I mean right in the lyrics it says “you can’t bring me down.” Something I think we all have said or wanted to say to something going on in our lives.
If I had to choose a favorite off the album, I think I would go with The Inside. Which songs are more fun for you to perform live?
The Inside is a great choice! We love playing that one, but everyone really seems to love performing Stop live. It’s 3 min of pure in-your-face rock!
You guys recently finished up a tour with 12 Stones. What are some memorable experiences you’ll take home from that tour?
Oh goodness…so many fun times were had on that tour. One stand-out memory was the last day of the tour. I believe we were in Georgia, and you know, bands tend to prank each other on the road. Especially when all the bands on the tour get along as well as we all did. So, the guys from 12 Stones and Blameshift came up on stage during one of our songs and literally set up a game of cornhole behind us and started playing. Then when it was 12 Stones’ set, we and all the other bands raided Jenny’s (lead singer of Blameshift) suitcase. We basically all dressed in drag and went up on stage and rocked out with them. I mean, if you can picture like 20 dudes on stage in drag dancing around. Paul from 12 Stones actually was laughing so hard he could barely sing the song all the way. He actually jumped into the pit in front of the stage and sang from there so he could see all the craziness first-hand. I think there are YouTube videos of it up somewhere……needless to say, nobody here is going to be a senator now that that video is out.
Oh gosh, that’s hilarious! When do we get to see you all on the road again? You guys hinted on your Facebook page that you might soon be headed down to Florida…any word on that?
Yes, we are hitting the road again here in October. Doing a bunch of southeastern dates. Things are still being finalized, but we will have those dates up soon!
You guys are a pretty young band, and already you’ve shared the stage with the likes of Chevelle, Red, My Darkest Days, Evans Blue, Safetysuit, Second Hand Serenade, Parachute, Ghosts Of August, Zach Myers of Shinedown, Chad Kroeger of Nickelback, 12 Stones, and Evan Taubenfeld. You’ve also played at some of the largest festivals in the U.S. (Rockapalooza, Summerfest and The Dewey Beach Music Conference and Festival). Besides the fact that you guys have really awesome music, what do you feel is the number one reason you’ve come so far so fast?
Well I mean, we all have a great work ethic. Everyone is fully invested in spreading the music to people. If you don’t have that in your band, you might as well throw in the towel because it is a lot of work!!! But besides that, the music just seems to resonate with people. It’s like once they hear it they are hooked in a good way, you know? It’s been really cool to see it first-hand at our shows; the change that happens in someone who has never seen us before. Once they hear the songs and see the performance, its on!
Anything else you’d like to add? Maybe something you would like to say to your fans?
We have the greatest fans in the world! Old and new they are just plain awesome! They drive hours and hours to see us, bring us awesome food, buy us a beer here and there, and rock their faces off at the shows! We can’t wait to see you all real soon on the road!!!
Thanks again for your time. Wishing you the best of success out there on the road!

Below is what he had to say to us.
FES: For readers who may not yet be familiar with Throwing Gravity can you please tell us a little bit about the band?
Sam: Throwing Gravity is a 4 piece rock band who writes/performs SONGS FOR EVERYONE. Dancing the line between the hard rock to the heartfelt ballad, we really try to evoke emotion and seek to find the story in every song we do. If that doesn’t make sense then come to a show or look us up online and it will.
FES: “It’s Not The End” is Throwing Gravity’s latest album released in December 2011. What can you tell us about this album you have not yet told anyone on planet Earth yet?
Sam: We had an interesting time trying to title the damn thing. Between a bunch of guys all trying their hardest to make the best title, that made the most sense for everyone, and really got across what we were all feeling at the moment in our lives, several tries were had. We actually had some 5 to 10 different album artwork ideas for the cover of the record too! Needless to say a lot of thought and effort went into every facet of that record.
FES: What are your thoughts on Here We Go Again being the number one song at iHeartRadio for four months?
Sam: I mean it’s just really really cool! It is kind of a validation that yes we can write good songs, and yes people “get” what we are trying to do musically. That my friends feels really good.
FES Does the band plan on officially releasing the song ‘Candlelight’?
Sam” Nothing is written in stone but if I was a betting man, I would say chances are pretty good for it to officially make the next record. We actually played it a few times live on this last tour we did and people really flipped over it. I mean brand new fans we had just made on that tour who were lucky enough to catch us playing that song, actually showed up at other shows in other cities and when we played that song they were already singing the words back to us. That’s a pretty good indicator that the song would make the record if you asked me.
FES: Using Five or less words please describle to us the Throwing Gravity concert experience?
Sam: Rocking – Heartfelt – Explosive – Emotional – Incendiary (yeah I said incendiary for all you “Almost Famous” fans out there haha).
FES: What does a fan at a Throwing Gravity concert have to do to get a band member to throw them a guitar pic or drum stick?
Sam: Hell, we love engaging the fans so if you are out in the crowd rocking your face off or singing the lyrics back to us, we see you and chances are good a guitar pic is coming your way! Other than that we’ve had fans come up to us at the merch booth and ask us for sticks or pics. I mean we’ve seen band’s selling that stuff to people but we feel its an awesome way to give those true fans another little piece of the live show experience and i mean you already paid your cover charge anyway.
FES: Throwing Gravity recently completed a tour with 12 Stones. If you were to write a song about this tour what would you call it?
Sam: Hmmm, a couple things come mind right away: 1) Too Much Fun and 2) Keep It Clear I’m sure the fans that met us on that tour can figure those titles out.
FES: Where do you see Throwing Gravity five years from now?
Sam: Man we always kind of joke about being on stage at the Grammy’s either performing or being up for an award. That would be pretty killer…im super serial.
FES: Do you have anything to say to Throwing Gravity fans whom read this interview?
Sam: You guys and gals are freaking amazing!!! We can’t wait to rock some shows with you again soon!!!

Nick James – Lead Vox/Guitar
Adam Gooch – Lead Guitar

Having already worked with some of the biggest names in the business including Josh Abraham (Velvet ...Having already worked with some of the biggest names in the business including Josh Abraham (Velvet Revolver, Linkin Park), Throwing Gravity are making a name for themselves. Their latest album, It's Not The End, was released at the end of last year. The band's single "Here We Go Again" has been played at NHL and MLB games, as well as TNA Wrestling. I recently spoke with Sam Hindmarsh, Throwing Gravity's bassist/vocalist, and we talked about his influences and what he hopes to achieve with the band.
Front Paige Metal News: How do you describe Throwing Gravity's music?
Sam: It's just catchy, hook laden, in-your-face rock that rides the razor's edge between harder rock and more laid-back, ballad type songs.
FPMN: What inspires you as a performer and a musician? When did you first realize that music was a passion for you?
Sam: For me, it all goes back to me being a super young kid around like age 4 or 5. My mom used to have this huge vinyl collection of all the great classical composers. I remember that when she would be working around the house, she would open up all the doors and windows, put on some Tchaikovsky or Mozart, and just crank the volume. I really learned how powerful music could be, and how it could make you feel from those experiences. Fast forward several years, and I'm going to rock shows and hiding explicit lyrics records under my bed so my parents wouldn't know I was listening to them. Everything from Zeppelin, the Beatles, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Rage Against The Machine, Edwin McCain; Hell, even John Denver had a hand in influencing the musician/songwriter I am today. As far as inspiration goes, all the music I mentioned obviously inspired me, but once I got out there and was performing in front of people it really became the fans who drove me to keep doing it. Knowing that I was maybe helping people in some aspect of their lives, and that we were connecting live and in person... there is just something completely awesome about that experience. Keeps ya going.
FPMN: What mark do you hope to leave on the music industry?
Sam: It would be cool to have at least one song that just becomes one of those songs that gets embedded in our culture. It just gets so widely known and liked that years down the road people are going to be drunkenly singing it a karaoke bar somewhere.
FPMN: What is coming up for Throwing Gravity?
Sam: Touring, touring, touring, then shooting a music video somewhere in there, tour some more, and then drop a new record next year sometime.
FPMN: Are there any interesting or funny stories that you can tell about you or one of your band members? Maybe a story from the studio or being on the road?
Sam: (Laughs) Yeah, when we were in the studio, and our singer Nick was tracking his vocals, Jon, our producer, would save all the little bobbles, swears, and idiosyncrasies of Nick that would obviously come out vocally. He would make a little comp at the end of the song/track, and it would just be freaking hilarious to hear it all going together! One of these little vocal clips actually is at the beginning or at the end of a lot of our YouTube videos because we made a short intro clip to tack on our videos you know with our logo on it etc. We added this vocal clip of Nick talking to Jon over the top of it as a joke and just ended up sticking with it.
FPMN: What is something that you would like my readers to know about your music?
Sam: We always try to find a way to express the story of each song we do. At the end of the day, we are really just story tellers who jump around on stage with loud guitars and drums. So, why not pull up a chair, "Like" us on Facebook, sit back, and enjoy the show?!

Surrounding Nick James in the band is Adam Gooch on guitar, Sam Hindmarsh on the bass and Eric Bice on the drums. I asked Nick to tell me a little about what their music is about. Nick responded with, “It’s large guitars, large drum, melodic melodies, about more and less keeping it full blown rock; songs that are straight forward that you can get the meaning out of them by just listening to them. Most fans can listen to one of our songs and relate to them right away.”
They recently toured with 12 Stones, Blameshift and Digital Summer to boot their careers back on track. It had been a while since they were able to tour after all the turmoil; it helped to get Nick to get “pumped back up.” He continued with, “It got the blood flowing again, guys are excited, now to be able to actually play the album to people and see the reaction to the songs. Our fans had been waiting a while to hear everything live. Even meeting new people who haven’t heard the stuff, to seeing there reaction as well. They would come up to us after the show just blown away. It felt great.”
Look for these guys back on tour very soon and make sure to pick up their debut album “It’s Not The End.” For more information check out their Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/ throwinggravity.

Better Days Ahead for Throwing Gravity

Lead singer, Nick James, recently took some off to talk with Alternative Addiction about the band’s progress as well as their time on the road with 12 Stones, Blameshift, and Digital Summer.
Though Throwing Gravity recently returned home from touring with 12 Stones and company, the group was actually supposed to embark on a tour alongside Cavo earlier this year before plans for the tour fell through. Needless to say, the band found themselves in panic mode for a moment as they scrambled to re-group and formulate new touring plans. “We were supposed to go out with them (Cavo) and then it was going to be 12 Stones after that; but that fell through and the stress level kind of shot through the roof at that point…it’s been an up and down ride for sure with this band but we’ve made a couple changes now in management and I feel things are moving in a more positive direction.”
Despite the cancellation of the Cavo tour, Throwing Gravity forged on and lined up a tour with 12 Stones, Blameshift, and Digital Summer. And while James openly admitted the tour didn’t pick up full steam until about halfway through, Throwing Gravity was simply happy just to be back on the road and playing for their fans. “It was great to be back out there and awesome getting to meet and have fun with all the fans. All those guys are great and we had a blast. It’s just good to finally get to play your music in front of people and not have to sit at home…it was kind of sad we couldn’t continue to go that full package for at least another month because it was honestly building some good steam and we became family with those guys of Blameshift and 12 Stones; so that tour was definitely the super highlight of this year.”
While the recent tour hit states across the country, James noted that playing at the Milestone Club in North Carolina was an important moment for the group. The club, which was established back in 1969, has hosted hundreds of artists over the years including music legends, Nirvana. “There were a lot of great venues but the Milestone in Charlotte was amazing…we were talking to the bartender and the promoter, and they told us Nirvana used to come through there all the time so we basically played on the same stage they did which was a cool moment. The crowd there was really awesome and I actually wasn’t expecting much but it was a pretty amazing show.”
But in contrast to the band’s experience at the Milestone Club, James joked a bit about how his hometown of Nashville can be one of the most difficult places to play. Known for its long and storied musical history, Nashville is home to a plethora of musicians and because of this, it can be quite challenging to earn a crowd’s approval. “I love Nashville but when you think about the market, it’s just that everybody’s here for music and to play music…it’s a tough town to play in and when you’re a hometown band, you have to play here once a year and if twice, then you’re squeezing the life out of everything because there’s so many musicians here. So basically people will sit there, cross their arms, and say I can do better than that (laughs).”
Throwing Gravity plans to hit the road again with Blameshift this month and tour the south before beginning a tour with Royal Bliss later this fall. The band is also in the process of creating a music video for their song, “The Inside,” and could possibly be looking to do another video for “Best Time” as well.

Band: Throwing Gravity
Tips:
1. Gold Bond powder and baby wipes are your very best friends!
2. Bring plenty of socks and underwear because when showers are scarce a fresh pair of drawers and a little gold bond goes a long way.
3. Individual packs of microwaveable Easy Mac are way better than ramen noodles, although I've eaten my share of ramen noodles.
4. Pack as light as possible, this saves precious space in the van! Think of it this way, if you can't fit your shit in an overhead bin on a plane you brought too much!
5. Rule 1 when you get to the venue, find the sound guy, introduce yourself, be prepared to answer your bands sound needs immediately and be prepared to downsize your needs to the bare minimum (especially if this is your first tour) and REMEMBER his/her name...you'll be amazed at how much better your set will end up sounding.
Keep up with the band on Facebook and Twitter.

Shauna: How did Throwing Gravity come to be and when did it start?
Nick: Actually Eric [Bice] found me on Craig’s List. Some of the guys that were in the band before had some other opportunities and I told them to go ahead and go. Now Throwing Gravity is what I hope will stay the way it is from here on out. I feel we have some good guys in place. Sam, our bass player now, lived out in California for a while and then moved here about a year ago. Eric just joined about four months ago and so did Adam the guitar player. It’s a fairly new line up of guys, but everybody knows their craft and knows what they are supposed to do. We all get along great. It is a solid line up.
Shauna: Have any of you been in notable bands before?
Nick: Eric was in a couple bands that were signed back in the day. He has done stuff with Saliva and in his earlier years he was with a couple of other bands.
Shauna: You have an incredible voice. How long have you been singing for?
Nick: I started trying to sing when I was twelve and it is going on twenty years now. A lot of people in my family are singers. They are not necessarily in bands, but they are in choir or opera and stuff like that. Jon King, our producer, and I have been best friends for years and he kind of helped me hone my craft too. It can tire you out singing, but I have gotten used to it and that kind of helped me make things sound a little bit better. I was able to have my voice move around a lot more rather than staying in this zone where it sounds bland.
Shauna: In December of 2011 you released your album It’s Not the End. I have listened to it a couple times and honestly I cannot find a song I don’t like. They are all great!
Nick: Thank you, I appreciate that. There is one song that everyone is raving about right now that no one has heard. It is called “Candlelight.” We had to re-record four off the Universal record, which was “What She Wants”, “Wake Up”, “Here We Go Again” and the rest of them are brand new. The song “Candlelight” did not make it to the record. We were playing it live this last tour and everybody was just freaking out over it. Right now we are actually writing and I’ve got four songs in three days, so it’s not too bad. We’ve been trying in this down time before we head back out on to the road to crank out ten to fifteen new songs. We have other songs too that we have messed with over the years as back up. I’m trying to have a whole record written before Christmas time just to have in our back pocket.
Shauna: Are you the primary songwriter in the band?
Nick: Yes
Shauna: Do the other members contribute?
Nick: Yes they do. There is one thing that I’m not afraid to admit. I can’t do everything by myself. I mean, I could if I wanted to, but it is better to have other people listen to it and get some ideas because I just box myself in real fast. I can crank songs out, but I need other people to help get me out of my shell. Jon King contributed to some writing as well on the record and he also produced it.
Shauna: How many songs do you typically write when writing for an album? I’ve heard bands say they wrote forty songs and ten make it.
Nick: I think ten is a solid number for a record. What we write makes it. There is not much excess fat. If there is, we file it away real fast at the beginning. We basically go down the line and decide what is good, what is crap and then basically go from there. The way I approach it is, I know ahead of time if there is crap on it and then I just stop. I don’t put it out just to put it out.
Shauna: The song “Here We Go Again” was #1 on iHeartRadio for 4 months and you made a video for it. It came out really cool.
Nick: Jon King actually shot that video too.
Shauna: We talked earlier about you putting out a new album. Do you have an idea as to when you might put the new album out?
Nick: I would say probably late next year. We are not quite done with this one yet. We still need to do some touring with it. I feel like we need to constantly stay on the road and let these songs speak for themselves.
Shauna: You have shared the stage with the likes of Chevelle, Red, My Darkest Days, Evans Blue, Safetysuit, Second Hand Serenade, Parachute, Ghosts Of August, Zach Myers of Shinedown, Chad Kroeger of Nickelback, and Evan Taubenfeld just to name a few. You recently finished a tour with 12 Stones. What are the plans as far as touring for the rest of the year?
Nick: That is the fun that I’m dealing with today. Right now we are trying to get on an earlier leg of the 12 Stones tour. As of right now we are leaving on September 24th to meet up with them for a few weeks. Other than that, I’m in talks with Blameshift right now trying to get something for two to three weeks in the southern states that will run into November. After that everything kind of shuts down for a minute.
Shauna: This summer you played some of the largest festivals in the U.S. such as Summerfest in Milwaukee, Rockapalooza, and The Dewey Beach Music Conference and Festival. Are there plans for any other festivals this year?
Nick: That all depends. We have two festivals that we can possibly play at in September, but if this tour happens then those will not happen. I’m still trying to work out some stuff for next year. We’d love to play at Rock on the Range and stuff like that.

The original band was called The Rust and it started back in 2007 or 2008, somewhere around there. All that aside, Throwing Gravity really just formed in the last few years. We ended up changing the name of the band to Throwing Gravity because some 80's band had the name The Rust before and we found out when we started doing all the legal stuff. We are actually talking right now about maybe doing one for "The Inside" and one for "Best Time." We are just kind of weighing the options right now. The three largest songs that everybody loves are "Missing You", "Lost In You" and "Best Time." It is a solid record and going back to the Republic days, when we were going through that process, it seemed like they had the same problem. They couldn't decide which song they wanted to put out as a single. They told us that we have seven singles and I was thinking it was a great problem to have.
Do you prefer the performance videos or do you like them to have a concept?
The next video that we are doing will have a story and less performance. For that last video we had a large story board, but we just couldn't make it come across the way it should have, so we were like "Let's just go straight live performance." It's a little tougher, especially whenever you are doing it indie style and trying to make it look good.
I think every band should have a live performance video because it gives the fans a taste of what they will see at a show and they get to see what you look like.
I agree with you and that is another reason why we need to shoot another video because we have all new members now.
The band has had multiple placements with NHL, MLB, and TNA Wrestling with the song "Here We Go Again." Have any of the songs been placed in TV or movies as of yet?
Not yet. I signed with Cherry Lane, which is now BMG right when all that stuff was going down. A month later BMG said "We will take you" and then everybody got fired. They’ve shared the stage with Chevelle, Red, My Darkest Days, 12 Stones, Second Hand Serenade and many others. Their industry team ups include producer/music exec Joshua Abraham(P!nk,Linkin Park,30 Seconds to Mars, plus) and audio engineer Ryan Williams(3DoorsDown, OutKast,Paramore, plus) plus others. Like any band they’ve had ups and downs but word on the street is this time’s the charm. Their newest album, It’s Not the End, includes songs that have risen from the dust of a record label’s shelf to be heard. People are listening and it’s getting serious attention. Throwing Gravity currently has song placements with the NHL, MLB, and TNA Wrestling.
Who is Throwing Gravity? Nick James- Lead Vocals/Guitar, Adam Gooch- Lead Guitar, Sam Hindmarsh- Bass/Vocals, Eric Bice- Drums
Where is home? Nashville, TN
Describe your own music. I would say in-your-face, pure rock. Catchy hooks with loud guitars and huge drums. I’d like to think that we are the Tonic or The Goo Goo Dolls of this era.
Describe yourselves by comparing each member to a character from a movie. The Expendables? Ha!
Nick- Sylvester Stallone
Adam- Jet Li
Sam- Dolph Lundgren
Eric- Jason Statham
What’s the story behind the name and the oxygen tanks? Initially we wanted to be called Throwing Copper because that was one of everybody’s favorite records by the band Live back in the 90’s. Obviously that wasn’t going to work because every time you googled Throwing Copper, Live’s
record would show up. I’ve always been a nerd when it comes to space and
science stuff, so after spitting nouns out between the guys for about 3 or 4 hours finally we all agreed on Throwing Gravity. As far as the oxygen tanks, my brother was an O2 salesman, he thought it would be a cool prop.
You’ve had a busy year with Rockapalooza, Summerfest, and “Beneath the Scars” tour. Break it down into cliffnotes. Rockapalooza was a blast! We got to share the stage with some amazing bands, such as our friends 12 Stones, Saliva, Puddle of Mudd and Ghost of August. Also
almost forgot to mention that for the after party we had some amazing vodka
infused gummy worms and whip cream. So you can imagine what ensued
afterwards. Summerfest is one of the largest festivals in the U.S. The whole festival is right off of Lake Michigan, so you always had this cool breeze blowing in while you played. We had a lot of great fans show up for that show, and it was great to share the stage with Chevelle once again. Those guys rock pretty hard!!! Beneath The Scars tour was definitely the highlight of the whole year so far. The tour consisted of 12 Stones, Blameshift, and Digital Summer. We all became pretty close, like a lil family on this tour. On days off we hit up some KOA campgrounds, staged some amazing Cornhole tournaments, and an occasional game of flip cup. That crew made the tour one of the best trips we’ve had yet!
You get to choose a super power. What do you choose and why?
Flying for sure. Who wouldn’t want to go anywhere you wanted at anytime? It
would be amazing!
So I saw the video of the prank on 12 Stones you guys were part of. Wtf? The link will be at the end of the interview but describe the master plan and rat out the instigators. Well… to start off its not easy to fit grown men into women’s clothes. The show took place in Marietta, GA at the 120 Tavern and Music Hall, and since it was the last show of the tour we all wanted to do something fun to one another. During our set, Blameshift and 12 Stones got up on stage and played Cornhole behind us as we played our song “What She Wants”. There’s a nice lil video of it on YouTube. During the Blameshift set Paul Mccoy from 12 Stones dressed up as a…well I’m not quite sure. He had a longhaired brown wig on with a bandana
wrapped around his head and some ray ban sunglasses on. He also was wearing some daisy duke cut off jean shorts. Anyways he strutted around stage like a waiter with shots of whiskey on a plate and fed the Blameshifters. Finally during 12 Stone’s set Jenny from Blameshift had an idea for all the guys to dress up in drag and flaunt around stage. Jenny ended up bringing in mostly all her clean clothes for us to wear so we would look legit. Let me tell you I don’t know how we kept it together because it was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen!
Who writes the lyrics and music? I’m the primary writer on all the songs, but the guys definitely contribute as well. It’s great having ideas flowing from several directions when I get stuck in a rut. Jon King, our producer and good friend of mine, also helps out in the writing process. He and I have done several co-writes together.
If you could choose one Throwing Gravity song to be placed in a time capsule that will eventually be opened in the year 2075 by a kid that survived a zombie apocalypse and will use it to help guide the new world order what would it be? I would have to say the song “Best Time” because it is about hope, and remembering all the moments that were special to you in the past. Most of the time we forget some of the best times in our lives because we are all ways on the go and want everything completed fast. The song’s overall meaning is to enjoy those small memories everyone tends to forget about.
What do you feel has been a defining moment in the life of Throwing Gravity? That would have to be the day we signed that record deal. You work hard for so long to get to that point and that was definitely (or so we thought) one of the highest points of our careers.
Weirdest thing… you’ve ever been asked to autograph? Happened on tour? Saw while driving on tour? Weirdest I’ve ever signed was a girls toe. While that may not be that strange it’s not everyday you sign someone’s toe. Don’t know if this is the weirdest but it was pretty crazy. I saw a guy get punched in the neck and passed out instantly on the floor snoring. While driving the weirdest thing I’ve seen is while we were driving through Atlanta, GA we passed a car on the interstate that was in a complete blaze. The flames were probably 20 ft high and this was during the middle of the day.
There’s this picture of one of you in a parking lot passed out in a broken lawn chair with a cell phone on his crotch. There must be a story? Well Sam won’t admit this but that was the second chair exactly like that, that he broke within a week. I guess those chairs were not meant for 6’5 200 lbs. guy. That picture was a Denny’s parking lot in Michigan were we set up shop before we headed over to the Rockapalooza Festival.
Care to share any thoughts about the music industry in general or give advice to an artist just beginning the journey? Be prepared to work like you’ve never worked before. It’s TOUGH! If you have a soft heart or a weak stomach, it’s probably not gonna be for you. But on the flip-side, when you find success, its extremely sweet.
Share something no one knows about Throwing Gravity.
Hmm, well we’re a Nashville band, but none of us are from Tennessee. Nick is
from Louisiana, Adam’s from Kentucky, Sam’s from North Carolina & Eric’s from Florida. It’s a miracle we all came together!
What does music mean to you and what is the #1 thing you hope is instilled into your live performances? It’s my life, my first love. And when people leave our show I want them to feel that love, to know that I appreciate them being there so that I can live this dream. And to feel like they’ve just had their faces rocked off….
Fast forward to next year. What’s going on with Throwing Gravity?
Touring, writing new music, a Grammy, who knows!

Shauna: Who are some of the bands you have not yet toured with that you would like to?
Nick: I’d love to tour with the Foo Fighters.
Shauna: Thank you so much for the interview. Was there anything you’d like to add or say?
Nick: Check out all of our social networks and our websites.

Throwing Gravity Ready New Album, Again

For the members of Throwing Gravity, 2011 has proved to be an extremely important year for the band....For the members of Throwing Gravity, 2011 has proved to be an extremely important year for the band. One which saw the band dissolve their contract with their label, contemplate breaking up, and very soon, finally self release their debut album.
“[I told the band] either we’re done, or we’re going to write a new record,” lead singer Nick James explained to Alternative Addiction about the crossroad that the band reached earlier this year after their record deal dissolved. “I felt writing a new record was going to people really excited, and I feel like we’ve got a way better record than we were going to have before.”
In order to pen some songs for a new album and breath life back into the band, James and producer Jon King went on a four day “writing trip” last spring to isolate themselves and focus on creating new music.
“I recommend doing that to everyone because it absolutely saved us,” explained James. “It got us away from those older style songs, although some of them are still on there like “Missing You” and “What She Wants.” There was no cars passing by, no one around, up in this cabin in North Carolina. It was just pretty much song writing and drinking the whole time.”
The result of the trip was three new songs: “Best Time,” “Given Up,” and “The Inside” all of which James said that he and King were very excited about.
“We went a little heavier on this album with a split between Active Rock and Hot AC,” said James of the sound. “It was fun to have the album kind of broke up, with the two contrasting styles. When we were recording we would track one style song and then switch to the other style, so we didn’t do the same thing over and over again.”
In addition to the new tracks, the band has retooled their hit single “Bring Me Down,” and renamed it “Here We Go Again.” The track is available on iTunes now, with plans to shoot a video for the album next week.
The brand new album from the band is due out December 6th.

It's Only The Beginning for Throwing Gravity

The album’s lead single “Here We Go Again” has garnished the band attention, being featured on TNA Wrestling, MLB and NHL games and has been #1 on the iHeartRadio chart for 4 months. They’ve also shared the stage with bands like 12 Stones, Chevelle and My Darkest Days and their experiences have definitely come through in their music.
The album begins with a strong guitar attack combined with up-tempo drumming and hard-edged vocals to create another hit single with “Circles.” The band heads to a more mainstream rock sound on “Giving Up On Giving Up On You” and “Best Time.” Their attractiveness lies in the hard rock prowess as demonstrated in the single “Here We go Again.” Throwing Gravity has also produced a future hit single with “What She Wants” as the music becomes very addictive. The album closes with the acoustic-based, power ballad “Lost In You.”
Throwing Gravity just wrapped up their summer tour and have no further dates scheduled at the moment. For more information, please visit throwinggravity.net.

Throwing Gravity Releases Album "it's Not The End"

In the fall of 2009, under their original name, The Rust, the band hit the road in promotion of their debut record – the first version that is – entitled “Anticipation”. Touring the House of Blues circuit in support of Secondhand Serenade & Parachute, the group traveled across the entirety of the continental U.S. and a portion of Canada, winning over fans night after night with rock and roll anthems and the live show to back them up. Routing the group to territory previously unknown, the tour ultimately landed the quintet in Los Angeles, and as fate would have it, right into the lap of industry legend Jason Flom, credited with discovering Collective Soul, Stone Temple Pilots, Matchbox Twenty and Kid Rock, in addition to a host of other highly successful acts.
After viewing the band’s showcase at the world-famous Viper Room, Flom signed the band to his newly-reformed Lava Records, doing business as a subsidiary of Universal Republic. All the hard work it seemed, had finally paid off – Throwing Gravity (to be) had finally landed the coveted “major label deal”.
Upon signing their contract with Lava/Universal in December 2009 and officially changing their name from The Rust to Throwing Gravity, the band was pushed right into the studio on January 1st, 2010 to begin the recording process for what would become “Wake Up”, the group’s (official) debut release. Featuring production and mixing from the likes of Chris Lord-Alge (Shinedown, Daughtry, Paramore), Ryan Williams (30 Seconds to Mars, 3 Doors Down, Outkast), Josh Abraham (Staind, Velvet Revolver, Limp Bizkit) and Jon King (Augustana, Future Leaders of the World, 3 Pill Morning), “Wake Up” included several new songs in addition to a collection of re-recorded songs from “Anticipation”, the bands original first record.
“Wake Up” was completed in the spring of 2010, and with masters in hand and multiplatinum team in place – production, mixing, legal, booking, management and label – the stage was set for what the members of Throwing Gravity planned to be the biggest year of their lives. But plans don’t always work out. For the better part of eight months, Throwing Gravity sat at home in Nashville, TN and waited. And waited. And waited. As time slowly dragged on, filled with unreturned phone calls, album release dates getting pushed back and tours falling through, it became increasingly clear that “the dream” was falling apart. And in late 2010, the dreaded phone call that everyone feared was on its way, finally came – Throwing Gravity was released from their contract with Lava/Universal Republic Records. And to make matters worse, their record – a product of countless hours of hard work, blood, sweat and tears, and lined with a slew of heavy-hitting industry names – was shelved, never to see the light of day.
By the end of 2010, the year that was so promising a mere 12 months earlier, Throwing Gravity was left with nothing. No record. No album. No money. A roller coaster ride leading straight back to square one.
After the inevitable period of mourning finally passed, Throwing Gravity decided to pick themselves up, dust themselves off and get back in the studio with friend and producer Jon King to record their first album yet again – for the third time. Armed with only the best songs from “Wake Up” and comprised predominately of new material, Throwing Gravity’s official debut record, “It’s Not the End”, is an audible masterpiece. Fueled by hard-hitting drums and burning guitar riffs on songs like “Circles” and “Stop”, layered with undeniable melodies and powerful lyrical content a la “Best Time” and “Given Up on Giving Up on You” and featuring the songs that have stood the test of time – “Wake Up”, “Missing You” and “Here We Go Again” – “It’s Not the End” is sure keep you listening from start to finish.
They say the third time’s a charm, and for the members of Throwing Gravity – Nick James (lead vocals/guitar), Jesse Triplett (lead guitar), Sam Hindmarsh (bass), Chris Scott (keys) and Tom DuPree III (drums) – that is precisely the expectation. And regardless of all the highs and lows that have occurred, the quintet’s mentality is no better expressed than through the title of their record. “It’s Not the End” proves that Throwing Gravity is in it for the long haul, and this time around, they’re playing for keeps. Suffice it to say, Throwing Gravity is just getting started

The band will be releasing their debut single “Bring Me Down” in the coming months with the Jon King/Josh Abraham produced album, Wake Up to follow shortly thereafter.
The band will be opening for Chevelle tomorrow night (5/4) at Cannery Ballroom in Nashville.
Here’s a prediction for you… Throwing Gravity is going to be huge. We once featured them in our A&R Report (back when they were called The Rust) and then told you when they got signed. Well now their debut major label album is slated to come out later this year with their first single “Missing You” going to radio next month. Get used to it, cause you’ll likely be hearing it a lot.
The band just posted up some of the new tunes from the forthcoming album titled Wake Up (Lava/Universal Republic). Check them out here and let us know what you think. We can definitely see them on tour with anyone from Daughtry and Three Days Grace to Lifehouse and Carolina Liar. Should be interesting to see if they do better in the rock world or more on the Top 40/Hot AC side. Either way, we see big things.

They played their first live show, they embarked on their first US tour, and they signed with a major label. They are now in the studio recording their album, which is set to be released in the middle of 2010. It’s being produced by Jon King and Josh Abraham; King produced their first album, and Abraham has worked with Rev Theory and Velvet Revolver.
We had a chance to see them play on Saturday night, and they’ve really solidified as a band since we first saw them in June. The founding members of the band are sons of some friends of ours, and it’s been really exciting to get somewhat of an insider’s perspective on their growth as a band. They’ve worked really hard over the past year or so, and they deserve all the attention they’ve been getting. I can’t wait to see what 2010 has in store for Throwing Gravity.

One bands I've recently heard is Throwing Gravity - a really good band that I think has a promising future. The style of this band is the same style I tend to write music in- sometimes heavy, all catchy, and built on a solid hook.

We recently talked with Shawn Fisher of Son of a Bad Man, whom were one of those good bands to be shown the door, another was Nashville’s Throwing Gravity. It’s unfortunate that they’re no longer with the label, but even more unfortunate is that the band’s album got shelved because this will further complicate it’s release. Despite the circumstances surrounding the band, Throwing Gravity’s Nick James said that they’re not letting it affect them.
“We're not down on it. We're all glad that it's happening now. I know that the industry is going through a lot of change right now. And it might have been the best thing that could ever happen,” James told Alternative Addiction. “We think that it will. We also feel like that if we had to do it all over again we would make the same choice. I can't see us making any changes from the information we got in the beginning and the people we met."
As for the record that the band recorded for that label debut, it might not be easy to get it released, but it will eventually see the light of day according to James.
“Luckily for us we had some things worked out. It's looking like the albums going to be okay. We're looking out in that area of things. We're just not certain yet about the release. Hopefully ya know sometime before... we die,” joked James.
While waiting to clear the red tape, the band’s not sitting on their hands waiting. They’re currently working on acoustic material. Alternative Addiction recently posted a free download of an acoustic version of their track “Finally Over,” which is available now in the AA Downloads section. According to James, the track is going to be the first of a few songs that the band will release on an acoustic EP they plan to release in the next couple of months.
“We’re working on some of the new stuff, we're looking at putting a new spin on some of the songs,” explained James. “Nothing too dramatic to them, just taking the songs down a notch and putting a new spin on it. I think we're going to do a 5-6 song EP and hopefully release it in March."
So the acoustic EP will come out in March, but other than putting out that acoustic EP, what does the band want to get done? James said a big part of what they want 2011 to be is a tour. "We definitely want to be on the road. That's close to number one on our list is getting back on the road.
