Once the bass kicks in it's a throwback to fun ska bands like Madness. The vibe is extremely infectious musically and had be bopping my head and tapping my feet throughout.
The lyrics are fun like the line "Do you ejaculate after the first few minutes of penetration?" The cadence is laid back and affected in an interesting and novel way that was totally refreshing and original. The singers voice is more than capable note-wise and has a crooning tone with a big dose of rock star attitude thrown in the mix which makes it perfect for this kind of song.
"love between the sheets" is a great hook and really gets the chorus going. There really could have been some better answer lines lyrically and perhaps going somewhere a bit different at the end of the chorus where a really interesting tag line would be could finish this song in a strong way. the chorus melody reminded me of a Queens of the Stone Age song but did veer off enough to not be a rip off.
The song really starts getting raucous after the 2nd chorus breakdown right up to the end. I imagine this song would be extremely fun to play live and would be doubly fun for an audience to hear loud. It's the kind of song that would induce involuntary jerky dance motions in anyone with a pulse.
The production is excellent with just enough room sounds to create a live feel. Really pro sounds from the start to finish. The mix is great as well allowing the band space to do it's thing and having the vocals right out front. Perhaps the only thing lacking would be for some new element, perhaps some backing vocals, to really lift and seperate the chorus. Of course arrangement-wise I would have loved to have heard that chorus leading me out.
The instrumental performances are all stellar here. It's all tight and simple, straight up and locked in. The drums, guitar, and bass are doing their job flawlessly to push this song ahead, with just enough angst and passion to support the singer's lethargic but cool style.
Overall this is a fun great anthemic song with a marvelous rollicking feel that really got me going. I think there are a couple things that could take this to the highest level as I mentioned above, but it's so close... I'm sold!
