Biography

MAGDA PISKORCZYK

(pronounce: Peas-KOR-chick)

is a young singer with a mature, low and unusual voice timbre. Described in France as “la voix noire et au costume blanc" (Black voice in a white costume). She is a guitar, bass guitar and percussion player, as well as a song writer. Magda performs music of Afro-American and African heritage. She is a two-time Semifinalist of the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, USA. Readers of the Polish blues quarterly chose her the Female Vocalist of the Year in 2003, 2004 and 2006.
She has released two CDs: "Magda Live" (nominated to the Fryderyk Award, the most prestigious award of the Polish Phonographic Industry) and "Blues Travelling" feat. Michal Urbaniak, a reknown jazz violinist. In 2009 Magda was invited to play with Konoba, an international band performing traditional West African music. She regularly performs with her band and has given shows at many festivals almost all over Europe.


MUSIC OF MAGDA PISKORCZYK

is her tasteful arrangements of funk, blues, gospel, soul, rock and jazz classics and her own original compositions as well. Despite her music being deeply set in the Afro-American tradition, it is very personal and innovative at the same time. Joy and humour, great emotions and energy are mixed with deep messages, melancholy, and moving sincerity. An unusual, very expressive usage of voice and perfectly matched sounds of guitars, a Hammond organ, a saxophone, percussion or other instruments make this music unique and captivating. Magda regularly involves the audience in collective singing, emotional shouting, hand-clapping or snapping their fingers.

Gospel, close to blues, is the second great fondness of Magda Piskorczyk. In 2007 Magda prepared a special program entitled "Tribute to Mahalia Jackson" with new versions of songs known from Mahalia's records. Wojciech Karolak, the most respected Hammond organ virtuoso in Poland, took part in this project as a special guest. Distinctive concerts of gospel standards have been performed in Poland, Germany, Hungary, France (at Blues Sur Seine Festival) and England (at City Sings Gospel Festival in Liverpool). Such shows are known for gripping energy and dynamics, original arrangements, charismatic vocal, excellent contact with the audience, which is alternately involved in spontaneous amusement and deep reflection.

So too are her arrangements, which certainly avoid the obvious and although they are acoustic-based, can be extremely powerful. Kudos too to saxophonist Arkadiusz Osenkowski for his definitely non-traditional playing, and also to Aleksandra Siemieniuk for her dobro playing - and let's not forget the rhythm section either.
  
  Credit belongs most of all though to Magda for her convincing and compelling creation of blue moods. She deserves to be far better known and hopefully this CD will help her to achieve that.

Her husky vocals and enthusiastic presentation suggest a compelling stage presence, and Magda Live (Artgraff) documents an adventurous setlist that encompasses gospel from Rev. Thomas Dorsey, contemporary music from Tracy Chapman and Deborah Coleman, and Jacques Brel’s „Hearts.” Curiously accented rhythms give an unsettling sound to many of the interpretations. Tracks that work best are Tommy Johnson’s „Canned Heat”, a cabaret-style reading of „All of Me”, and a raucous run through Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s „Up Above My Head.”

In general, I would say that sensitivity of Magda oscillates close to the black rootsy music, so she derives from blues and jazz, but with the equal bravery she refers to the African sounds and rhythms. That makes explosive mixture indeed.
  
  I do not know how it was possible to transmit on this lifeless disc vibrations, that were served with music to the audience and returned back with double power. It is success to catch emotions!

  In Poland there are blues artists too. And that does not surprise me. It is not because Poland is a ...In Poland there are blues artists too. And that does not surprise me. It is not because Poland is a member of the EU since 1 May 2004 that everything goes well in that country. Magda Piskorczyk is a Polish blues lady. She was born in the south west of Poland and has been making music since she was young. With her band Sexy Mama she won first prize at the Bialystok Festival in 2001. Afterwards she went solo and performed with most of the best known Polish blues artists. Three times (2003, 2004 and 2006) the readers of the magazine Twoj Blues (Your Blues) elected her as best Female Blues Vocalist. She released two studio albums, "Make Your Spirit Fly" (2002) and "Blues Traveling" (2005). Now there is a live cd called "Magda Live". Her voice is coarse and raw but nevertheless she succeeds in putting lots of feeling in it. She and her band play a variety of styles. Jazz-blues in 'All Of Me', Chicago-blues in Paul Rogers's 'Muddy Waters Blues', even some gospel on the traditional 'Joshua Fit the Battle Of Jericho'. There is time for a joke with 'Kermit Blues' but is serious business again on Jacques Brel's 'Hearts'. There are 18 tracks (13 songs) on Magda Piskorczyk's CD "Magda Live" nad multimedia with slide show and 15 minute concert video. I can hardly wait to see this lady live on stage!

  Magda hat alle großen Festivals im Osten gespielt und 2005 / 2006 bei der International Blues Challenge im Süden der USA viel mehr als nur einen Achtungserfolg erzielt. Sie besticht durch ihr volles Gitarrenspiel und durch ihren fantatisch phrasierenden Gesang. Bei ihren Auftritten spannt sie den Bogen vom klassischen Delta-Blues über Gospelsongs bis hin zum Jazz. Ihre neue Live-Cd ist komplett dem Blues gewidmet - Magda versteht sich selbst als Blueserin. Die Aufnahmen sind sehr persönlich, es kommt ein fast intimes Clubfeeling rüber. Der Spass und die Spielfreude der Musiker ist fast fühlbar. Die Auswahl der Songs geht vom Walking Blues von Robert Johnson über Paul Rogers bis zu Hearts von Jacques Brel.
  Unterstützt wird Magda von Roman Ziobro am Contrabass, Arkadiusz Osenkowski am Saxophon, M. Ziobro am Schlagzeug und Aleksandra Siemieniuk an der Dobro.
  
  Als Schmankerl befindet sich auf der im Übrigen sehr aufwendig mit Booklet gestalteten CD ein zwei Songs umfassendes Livevideo und vielen Photos von Magdas Auftritten. Leider ist diese Juwel in Deutschland nicht im Vertrieb...

  Deux albums et quelques collaborations intéressantes auront permis a Magda Piskorczyk de présenter au public sa propre version du blues, la Polonaise prenant soin de brasser avec beaucoup d'idée des influences ou le gospel, le jazz, la soul et le rock on a chaque instant leur mot a dire, et c'est en partageant les guitares avec Aleksandra Siemieniuk, en confiant la contrebasse a Roman Ziobro et en s'adjoignant les services de Maksymilian Ziobro a la batterie et d'Arkadiusz Osenkowski au sax ténor qu'elle se fend d'un premier effort en public sur lequel elle revisite les standards, mais aussi bien plus parfois...
  
  Enregistré a Gdañsk début décembre 2006, "Magda Live" s'offre le son parfait des productions réalisées pour la radio dans le cadre de studios spécialisés et affiche une qualité impressionnante, que ce soit au niveau du jeu ou a celui d'une réalisation en tous points irréprochable. La set list n'est pas en reste puisque l'on y retrouve divers genres d'hymnes propices a nous emmener sur les chemins de traverses des musiques bleues, de "Walking Blues" a "Joshua Fit The Battle Of Jericho" en passant par quelques morceaux de pure bravoure tels que le "Crossroads" de Tracy Chapman, le "Muddy Water Blues" de Paul Rodgers, le "Up Above My Head" de Sister Rosetta Tharpe ou encore une fort intéressante relecture des "Cours tendres" de Jacques Brel qui sous l'influence de Magda Piskorczyk devient un "Hearts" charmeur au possible.
  
  On appréciera le partage avec une assistance séduite par le show et meme si l'on ne comprend pas toutes les interventions parlées, enregistrement a domicile oblige, on sent que le courant passe grâce avant tout a une musicalité de tres bon niveau mais aussi et surtout a des qualités humaines indéniables. Le superbe digipack, particulierement bien illustré, voyage admirablement bien par la poste, tout du moins en attendant que Magda Piskorczyk trouve une distribution en France... Gruizig op Robert Johnson's 'Walking Blues' en zwoel op het jazzy 'Fever'. Magda Piskorczyk werd in het Poolse bluesmagazine tot drie maal toe door de lezers uitgeroepen tot beste vrouwelijke zangeres. Op haar doorreis in Europa vond zij tijdens haar optredens respect en bewondering, zowel in de jazzclubs als op bluesfestivals. In Frankrijk, op 'Blues Sur Seine' in 2006 imponeerde zij qua muzikale visie en expressieve stem. Verwonderlijk is dit niet wanneer je deze veelzijdige bluesdame op haar eerste Live Cd beluistert, opgenomen in de studio van Radio Gdansk, in interactie met het publiek. Die Live sfeer wordt nog versterkt door de intro's in het Pools en de humoristische tussendoortjes, wat bij tweede beluistering toch wat storend werkt.
  
  In de songs zelf valt echter vooral de professionaliteit op en het vuur waarmee Magda Piskorczyk als een Poolse Patti Smith haar songs vertolkt. In Oost-Europa zit blijkbaar veel bluespotentieel, want de ritmesectie van de beide Ziobro's met drum en contrabas en vooral Osenkowski met zijn tenorsax stuwen dit Live album kwalitatief de hoogte in.
  
  Magda Piskorczyk, die oorspronkelijk computerwetenschap studeerde, koesterde haar kinderliefde voor zang en muziek met zorg, meer specifiek voor soul en blues, wat zij al zingend tot een eigen stijl ontwikkelde. Toen zij in 2001 haar debuut maakte op het festival in Bialystok, oogstte zij een eerste succes. Na haar eerste 'full' cd 'Blues Travelling' in 2005, verschijnt nu dit Live exemplaar, waarop de 'naturel' opvalt waarmee Magda van het ene naar het andere genre en ritme overschakelt.
  
  Tracy Chapman mag tevreden zijn met de wijze waarop Magda's bluescombo aan 'Crossroads' een para-Afrikaans koloriet geeft. Bij de 'Work Song' van Nat Adderley, met sobere saxbegeleiding, wordt de moeizame slavenarbeid in een 'chain gang' gesuggereerd. En rond de verinnerlijkte 'Muddy Water Blues' zweeft een triest rouwrandje, nog geïntensifieerd door de dobrobegeleiding van Aleksandra. Een emotioneel pareltje, zoals trouwens ook Jacques Brel's naar het Engels vertaalde 'Les coeurs tendres'.
  
  Deze Poolse bluesdame wacht ongetwijfeld nog een mooie toekomst, want zij voelt zich in haar element zowel in de jazzclubs, als op een bluesfestival of gospelevenement. En de sfeervolle aansluitende video van ongeveer 15 minuten geeft bijkomend een visueel beeld van haar charisma tijdens het gefilmd concert.

Het is niet omdat sinds 1 mei 2004 het land lid is van de Europese Unie dat daar nu opeens alles op wieltjes loopt. Eentje die de blues een warm hart toedraagt is Magda Piskorczyk. Zij is geboren in het zuidwesten van Polen en is al van jongsaf aan met muziek bezig. Met haar band Sexy Mama won ze in 2001 de eerste prijs op het Bialystok Festival. Nadien ging ze een tijdje solo en trad op met de bekendste Poolse bluesartiesten. Tot driemaal toe (2003, 2004 en 2006) ontving ze door de lezers van het Poolse blues magazine Twoj Blues (Your Blues), de Blues Top Award in de categorie Female Blues Vocalist of the Year. Ze heeft ze al twee studio albums uitgebracht, "Make Your Spirit Fly" (2002) en "Blues Travelling" (2005). Nu is er de live-cd "Magda Live". Wat me meteen opvalt, is haar stem. Deze klinkt helemaal niet onaardig: vrij hees, met heel wat rauwe accenten en toch slaagt ze er in om er ontzettend veel gevoel in te leggen. Vastpinnen op één bepaald genre is blijkbaar niet aan deze band besteed. Zo krijgen we wat jazzy-blues te horen in 'All Of Me', Chicago-blues in Paul Rogers' 'Muddy Waters Blues' en gaan ze de gospel toer op in de traditional 'Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho'. Even is het lachen met 'Kermit Blues', om daarna weer bloedernstig van wal te steken met Jacques Brel's 'Hearts'. Met deze cd kun je niet alleen 18 prachtige songs beluisteren, maar krijg je ook nog de kans (tenminste als je een pc, of dvd hebt) nog eens alles op je scherm te bekijken, als extraatje is er ook nog een slide-show. Zelf kan ik amper wachten deze dame live aan het werk te zien!

  Tak siê sk³ada, ¿e jestem œwiadkiem muzycznej drogi Magdy Piskorczyk niemal od pocz¹tku. Od wystêpów solowych przez okazjonalne konfiguracje personalne, trio wspó³tworzone przez gitarzystkê Olê Siemieniuk i saksofonistê Arka Osenkowskiego, a¿ po obecny sk³ad. W rezultacie uda³o siê Magdzie wypracowaæ w³asne brzmienie, które wynika nie tylko z niekonwencjonalnego instrumentarium (swinguj¹ca sekcja, muzyczne interakcje akustycznych gitar i saksofonu), ale przede wszystkim z osobliwej, coraz bardziej wyrazistej wizji artystycznej. W du¿ym uproszczeniu mo¿na powiedzieæ, ¿e wra¿liwoœæ Magdy oscyluje wokó³ czarnej muzyki korzeni, siêga zatem do bluesa czy jazzu, ale równie odwa¿nie nawi¹zuje do brzmieñ i rytmów afrykañskich. Powstaje z tego doprawdy wybuchowa mieszanka.
  
  Album koncertowy to muzyczna prawda. Zazwyczaj s³yszymy na nim najlepsze utwory z repertuaru. Bywa jednak zdradliwy, mo¿emy siê przekonaæ, jak artysta radzi sobie z publicznoœci¹, czy w jego muzyce jest naturalny ogieñ, czy wreszcie zespó³ nie przynudza, gra równo i tak dalej. Na pocz¹tek s³yszymy ograny standard "Walking Blues". Zagrany w ¿ywym chicagowskim rytmie shuffle zmienia siê w kompozycjê, której nie zna³em. Zaœ saksofonowe solo Arka Osenkowskiego niemal parzy mi uszy. Równie daleki od pierwowzoru jest "Fever" Little Willie Johna, który równie¿ nabiera korzennej pieprznoœci, tak¿e dziêki Magdzie, która œpiewa nad wyraz drapie¿nie. Temperatura nie spada przy lekko funkuj¹cym "On The Hunt".
  
  Nie chcia³bym opisywaæ precyzyjnie wszystkich utworów, by zostawiæ nieco niespodzianek dla s³uchacza. Zreszt¹ có¿ tu mog¹ s³owa, skoro s³uchaj¹c, mo¿na to prze¿yæ. Jednak podkreœlam, ¿e o ile pierwsza p³yta Magdy Piskorczyk ("Blues Travelling") wymaga³a pewnego wyciszenia, o tyle tu mamy ¿ywio³! Mamy iskry p³yn¹ce po strunach, mamy przyspieszone têtno publicznoœci, mamy g³êboki groove autentycznej, p³yn¹cej z serca i ducha muzyki. Nie wiem, jak to siê sta³o, ale uda³o siê zarejestrowaæ na martwym kr¹¿ku wibracje przekazywane muzyk¹ ku publicznoœci i oddawane z nawi¹zk¹. Uda³o siê uchwyciæ emocje! Nawet tak ascetyczny temat jak "Work Song", zaœpiewany tylko z towarzyszeniem saksofonu czy medytacyjny "Muddy Water Blues" z delikatnym akompaniamentem i uduchowionym solem Oli Siemieniuk pe³ne s¹ wewnêtrznej si³y.
