Biography
"One of the most exciting and eclectic bands at this years Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival...a cosmopolitan work out for mind and the feet!" (**** Star Review)
The Scotsman Newspaper for The Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival 2010
"World jazz with electronica infusions would be the best way to describe GOL who have an after-hours ambience made more interesting bythe Middle Eastern-derived scales and textures. Roxana's vocals float seductively and the lyrics evoke transition, rootlessness and longing
without descending into mournfulness. A classy set."
The Skinny Music Magazine
"I saw GOL at the Kelburn Garden Party Festival back in June.'GOL':sounds a bit like 'soul' ...but more like 'sol', sun and soul...Fantastically original band. Keep up the good work!"
Ed Stack, Founder of Ten Tracks Records
GOL are a UK/Persian band formed in Edinburgh in September 2006.
Their fresh and funky fusion of traditional Persian arrangements, electronica, jazz and world music have spread waves of excitement from Scotland to the Middle East and USA, leading to numerous slots on BBC TV and a busy summer of festival performances in the UK.
GOL are influenced by fusing elements of jazz, persian songs, hip-hop, funk and big "world" grooves to create an intense upbeat live set that engages music lovers souls and dancing feet.
Recent gigs include:
Bush Hall London (for BBC TV), Celtic Connections, Kelburn Garden Party, Big Tent Festival, Hidden Door Festival Knockengorroch Festival, Middle East Festival, Roxy Art House, Edinburgh Iranian Festival
In 2009, GOL were commissioned by the Scottish Arts Council and The Edinburgh MELA to create an hour of new music and film for the Mela Festival, called "Mixed Up" (5 star review in the Scotsman Newspaper).
In 2010, they were selected to be part of the Scottish Jazz Festival Expo 2010 who promote what’s exciting in Scottish jazz, and performed at the Edinburgh International Jazz & Blues Festival. GOL also headlined the infamous Bongo Club and numerous festivals including Edinburgh Meadows Festival and curated the Edinburgh MELA jam session with world. jazz and hip-hop musicians
In 2011, BBC TV broadcast a 30-minute documentary about GOL as part of their "Close Up" on music series, following their creative process as they recorded their new album.
In 2013 they will release their new album STRANGE TIMES and play a series of gigs from Edinburgh to London to launch the album, stopping to play at the famous Liverpool Philharmonic Hall on the way.
