Biography

LiLach and Gary Bonanni are a songwriting duo originally based out of NYC. The two met in a lower east side music club called Rockwood Music Hall where Li was working. With Gary living a block away from the club they often found themselves recording songs in his small home studio. They brought together ideas that were influenced by Country, Folk, Indie Rock and Americana. These songs would eventually become the material forming their first official record, a seven song EP called "Sawyer" (released in 2008). They performed with an array of musicians in the NYC area including NYC greats Sasha Dobson (Norah Jones), Erik Lawrence (The Levon Helmes Band), Jamie Alegre (The Dig) , Rene Hart (James Hunter) and Charlie Burnham (James "Blood" Ulmer).
With this ever-changing act they headlined in venues all around the NYC area including: the Living Room, Rockwood Music Hall, Pianos, Mercury Lounge...etc. In 2007 they took the act on the road and haven't stopped since. At this time the band name Just Married took form. Originally starting as a joke, the two thought it would be a funny idea to cross the country with a Just Married sign in the back of the car. So they did it, after all, they were just two buddies on the road together following a dream. Over the past three years Just Married has performed across the United States and Canada playing over 20 major cities including Chicago, Louisville, New York, Boulder, Santa Fe, San Francisco, Toronto, Montreal and others. In 2009 Just Married played a 7 show tour in Israel with an invitation to perform on the main stage as a special guest at the Jacobs Ladder Bluegrass Festival.
The musical style of the band Just Married has been described as Americana and 60s Rock with dominant female vocals and strong melodies. Citing influence from John Lennon, The Band, Aimee Mann, Norah Jones, Neil Young, Wilco and Elliott Smith, Just Married music comes across with hints, twists and catches drawn from those greats intertwined with original concepts creating a throwback/vintage sound with new ideas. The band has an authentic Indie sound that brings warm tones, interesting melodies and layers and blends that could only come from the Indie recording environment. Li and Gary write, record (including all instrumentation), engineer and produce all recordings in their recording studio known as "Cabin on a Farm Studios," a self-built recording studio retro-fitted out of a room in their cabin tucked in the back corner of a farm.

On two previous albums (in 2008 - “Sawyer” and 2009 - “For Our Friends”) they performed across the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Israel , with over 20 major cities in the United States and Canada alone including: Chicago, Louisville, New York, Boulder, Santa Fe, San Francisco, Toronto, Montreal and others. The band Just Married also played in festivals such as The Secret Garden Party (Great Britain 2010), Jacob’s Ladder Bluegrass Festival (2009, 2010, 2011) and the Jersey City Arts Festival (2008).
Along the way they have had the pleasure of working with an array of musicians in the NYC area including NYC greats Sasha Dobson (Norah Jones), Erik Lawrence (The Levon Helmes Band), Jamie Alegre (The Dig), Rene Hart (James Hunter) and Charlie Burnham (James "Blood" Ulmer). In 2011 they celebrate the release of a new record and, very proudly, the birth of their first child.

Li and Gary write, record (including all instrumentation), engineer and produce all recordings in their recording studio known as "Cabin on a Farm Studios," a recording space retro-fitted out of their cabin tucked in the back corner of a farm.
"Waiting For The Changes," is written, performed, recorded and produced by LiLach and Gary Bonanni at Cabin on a Farm as well at Sonic Boom Studios in New Jersey (Anthony Krizan - Spin Doctors, Lenny Kravitz) with the help of Jamie Alegre (drums) and Anthony Krizan (bass and acoustic guitar) on some tracks. Mixed by Simon Vinestock at MixFarm (David Bowie, Robert Plant, Sting).
The finest record the duo has recorded yet encompasses a wide range of musical genre and authentic ideas with their original and genuine delivery.

"One More Breath" will be part of the Levee Breaking's Love/No Love Compilation including artists such as Ani DiFranco as a benefit against Domestic Violence in June 2010.

  Just Married : LiLach has the kind of voice where it is hard to tell whether she is talking with a l...Just Married : LiLach has the kind of voice where it is hard to tell whether she is talking with a lyrical lilt or singing. She and duo partner, Gary Bonanni, met on New York City’s Lower East Side in a club. What started as a joke became a band name, Just Married, when the two friends toured the US with the future title scrawled on a banner on the back of their car. Just Married have been playing and touring for three years across the US and Canada as well as a seven show tour of Israel. The band is currently touring in Support of their most recent release, “For Our Friends”. They are expanding previous tour stops to include the UK (July) and heading back to the US and Canada for fall performances that will take them through San Francisco, Boulder, New York, Chicago, Montreal and Toronto.
  The music on ‘For Our Friends’ takes advantage of Li’s style mixing the power of the female vocals with potent melody lines and strong hooks. The songs come in from the Indie side of Americana. They take influences (John Lennon, Elliott Smith, Aimee Mann, Norah Jones, The Band, Neil Young) and infuse their natural instincts to create memorable songs. “Workin’ Man” comes in with an infectious bounce, “One More Breath” makes use of the title’s technique as voice floats over persistent acoustic guitar chords and echoey stripped down piano parts. A city shuffle invades “Eugene Eric” early on and “Free to Love” strides along like a 70’s AM Pop gem in the style of She and Him. Just Married create little lights that attach a lot of friends to bask in the glow of the album title’s dedication.

But what if your work is music, does that rule still apply? My next guests on this wonderful Friday are breaking all those notions and are making some really great music as well. Just Married is a band comprised of Gary & Lilach Bonatti. Last year they released the well received album, ‘For Our Friends’ and are about to embark on a US tour. Join us this weekend as we talk abot how they met, having children, the Israeli music scene, and so much more. There is also an MP3 of “Free To Love” to take with you!
  
  Stoli: Where are we talking from today and how is your summer going?
  
  JM: Hi Stoli, first off, it’s a pleasure for us to do this interview with you. We were part of the SKOPE Artist of the Month feature that you do with independent bands/musicians a few months ago and became fans of what you are doing. The summer has really just started for us as and so far it’s going well. We are sitting in Hyde Park, London, on a day off in between shows. Yesterday we played the legendary Bedford in Balham and are getting ready to play the Secret Garden Party in a few days.
  
  Stoli: You two are married. Did you get married before you started recording music or vice versa?
  
  JM: Actually, we named the band “Just Married” as a joke when we formed the band. We were only friends at the time and thought it would be a fun concept on our first tour to put a “Just Married” sign in the back of the car with our website and information about our band. The first sign was magnetic and fell off the trunk within 15 miles from leaving our house. After that we tried writing on the window which seemed to work much better. By the end of the tour our friendship was advanced enough that we knew we were actually going to get married.
  
  Stoli: How has the fact that you play music together helped to enahnce your marriage and your relationship?
  
  JM: Getting to make music is fulfilling on its own and we are lucky enough to have someone to share and collaborate with. It’s up to you to as to how it translates to your life as a whole. There is intimacy in the creation process when you are collaborating and that’s probably why there’s no surprise to see romances happen within bands or when multiple acts tour/travel together. Making music definitely brings together facets of problem solving, supporting ideas, give and take, growth and development , love…etc. And like relationships your managing of these things can be healthy or not. We’ve both been in “unhealthy bands” and everyone has had an unhealthy relationship or two. To be able to work on these things as they translate into music really does help in normal everyday relationship things. Of course there’s challenges but it certainly helps us communicate and work out our stuff.

  Stoli: How long were you working on your new album and how did the title ‘For Our Friends’ come up?
  
  JM: We worked on this record for about eight months from starting the first song to putting the finishing touches on the last. We went through a number of re-do’s where we got pretty close to the end of a song and decided to trash it and start over. Having your own studio and doing your own engineering and production supports this trial and error method of recording. The title for our friends came when we had finished the record and were settling on a name. Being that the record is a concept set around a character named Eugene Eric, the fifth track, it could’ve easily been the album’s title. But we really wanted to pay tribute to our friends and biggest supporters who have been helping us along the way, giving us beds to sleep in, food to eat and plenty of love on the tours. So we named our album in honor of them.
  
  Stoli: You are constantly touring & playing live. At some point would you like to have kids and will the children join you on the road?
  
  JM: We will definitely have kids. Both of us want to be parents and are excited for it. It’s a funny/timely question because we’ve been talking a lot about it lately, how to handle the logistics of being on the road with a child. We hope the opportunity continues to present itself for us to perform around the world and if it does we know we’ll make it work. This is what we are good at.
  
  Stoli: You have played all over the world. What are two of your favorite cities that you have played and why?
  
  JM: We really enjoy playing in Jaffa, Israel. Here is a city that is over 4,000 years old. Just driving though you can feel the history. We found a small outdoor venue there that we’ve played a number of times right above the old port and entrance into the city. There is an old fallen archway that sits right below where we tune our guitars that is thousands of years old. With a view of the Mediterranean it’s truly an amazing place. The venue itself has an arched stone ceiling, sort of a covered terrace that is open to the streets. The acoustics are amazing. Shmulik , the owner, treats us with the kind of love and respect you just can’t forget.
  
  And of course we love playing in New York City. In particular, the Rockwood Music Hall is our home. It’s a great sounding room with an audience that is there to listen to what you have to say. We’ve both played there a number of times as Just Married but also in different acts before Just Married ever existed. LiLach worked there and I lived just a block away and would go visit all the time, this is how we met. At any time you can see amazing NYC underground greats playing there. Ken, the owner, recently opened up a “stage 2” next door that is supposed to be incredible. We haven’t been there yet.
  
  Stoli: You spend a lot of time in Israel. How is the music scene there and who are some cool Israeli bands we should check out?
  
  JM: The music scene is cool. Musicians in this country are really talented. There’s no question that the arts are supported in Israel and it is a pleasure to play there and experience it. From the music perspective you have the traditional Middle Eastern music but you also see that there is a love for the Indie scene. It’s a nice crossbreed. Asaf Avidan and Geva Alon are cool to check out. Our pals from the band HOLLER! are a Bluegrass/Americana band based out of Tel-Aviv. They have a great and meaningful song called “Jerusalem” that we love. LiLach is singing backing vocals on that track.
  
  Stoli: If a Palestinian were to come to your show in Tel Aviv would that surprise you or do you encourage that?
  
  JM: This is a country where there are Muslim people, Christian people, Jewish people, etc. Everyone is everywhere. We’ve done performances in the Shuk (an outdoor market) where everyone and anyone can listen and have had amazing experiences meeting all kinds of people. It wouldn’t surprise us to see any race or religion and we certainly aren’t in the practice of sorting out people by how they look or what they believe in. We believe in sharing the love with anyone through the music we make and encourage all people to be a part of it.
  
  Stoli: I really respect your independent work ethic. Where would you like to see your music careers go or have you reached that point already?
  
  JM: Thanks very much. We’d like to see our music in a Cohen brothers film (hahaha – we love them). We’d love to see our music in film and mediums of that nature because of the exposure and opportunity involved. To continue to make music for as long as we can is a dream we are making every effort to keep alive. This is what we love to do and one thing we know is how lucky we are to have the opportunity to do it.
  
  Stoli: I really like the upbeat and positive vibes in your songs. Would you say that reflects your personality in real life?
  
  JM: Thanks again. This record,” For our Friends”, is really a translation of our lives. Yes, every lyric and line comes from our experiences. The album is a story/concept about a character who finds himself realizing that in order to be happy his dreams have to be the right ones, or they will never be enough. He puts himself into the mix of a big city and tries to “make it” only to realize how generic he was becoming, feeling the gripes of betrayal, addiction, attachment to a city that doesn’t want you. Finally he gets out of this place to discover something new – To dream again. We certainly have felt like this character throughout our experiences and our main effort was to convey that even when you are going through these things there is a positive way to see it and express it. Obviously there are many ways to handle anything but we truly feel that keeping a positive perspective brings good energy. Good vibes bring good things.
  
  Stoli: I have always felt music is the most powerful medium to unite people. What are your thoughts on this statement?
  
  JM: We agree. There’s music out there that really does that and is timeless. Look at the things that John Lennon said and the power of his ability to bring people together. It’s obviously not just him but you can go anywhere and catch a live show and be taken by surprise by what someone has to say. Your life can be changed by these things. We just played the Bedford and the act after us (the Julian Tulk Band) had something to say to us directly, we felt. And if it isn’t an Indie act playing for pennies listen to Leonard Cohen or Neil Young or Aimee Mann (doesn’t the list go on and on?). It’s also the act of live performance itself that joins people that otherwise would have never had the opportunity. Just in our experiences alone we can say that we’ve come together with people because of music that we probably wouldn’t have in other situations. There is something really special in that.
  
  Stoli: I really like your song, “Free To Love.” What is that songs meaning to you?
  
  JM: Thank you! Free to Love is a song based on this feeling that things can get you down or make a good feeling fade away. Or maybe there’s something that is causing a doubt that you can’t seem to identify completely. Doesn’t life get you in this place sometimes? In the theme of the record, the character is looking for something to bring back that feeling of being free to find something good. No more rain, as Paul McCartney would say. Sunshine come back to me! To be free to love what’s out there to love, that’s where it’s at, we suppose.
  
  Stoli: What is coming up for you & where can we follow you online?
  
  JM: We are finishing up our tour here in London and then we have a 15 show tour scheduled for the states over 11 cities.   Skope: What were you doing when you found out you were selected for Skope A2W April 2010?
  JM: We were taking our normal morning routine of, coffee, listening to yesterday’s studio work on the monitors and checking email when we came across the good news!
  
  Skope: Now that the weather is nice will you be out playing live this summer & spring & where?
  JM: We’re playing the main stage at Jacob’s Ladder Bluegrass Festival in Israel in May ( http://www.jlfestival.com/index.asp ). Its a beautiful venue that is set on the edge of the Sea of Galilee. We played there last year and were invited back. This year we are playing a set with our buddies from HOLLER! a great bluegrass band based out of Israel. It is truly a magical place to be. Also we have a tour scheduled in July in London centered around the Secret Garden Party Festival for art and music (http://new.secretgardenparty.com/2010/ ). While in the UK we are also playing the Bedford and some other venues.
  
  Skope: What motivates you everyday to get up and create and work on your music?
  JM: Good question. We live on a farm with 5 dogs and a music studio in our house. It’s a great setting to be recording music. Making music is what we love to do. Having the studio with you all the time takes the pressure off of feeling like you have to get everything done in a specific time frame. We can wake up, have a coffee, walk the dogs and get to work…..or not! You ride the waves of inspiration and sometimes they are fruitful and sometimes you just can’t get anything done. When things aren’t working we take a break, go for a walk, pick a few clementines from the trees….etc. Clementines usually do the trick. Generally, we try our best to keep the pressure off, the discipline on, and let the music flow out when it needs to. But one thing we never, ever, forget is how lucky we are that we get to make music and share it with our friends.
  
  Skope: What bands & musicians before you heavily influenced your sound?
  JM: Originally being from New York we could name so many from there that we admire. People like Sasha Dobson, Charlie Burnham, Renee Hart, Erik Lawrence – these are some amazing NYC musicians that you can virtually see all over the LES or the Village or touring in huge venues around the world. Lately we’ve been loving John Lennon’s “Plastic Ono Band” and the new Wilco record. Elliot Smith’s “Basement on the Hill” record is inspiring and heartbreaking at the same time. LOVE “Chaos and Creations in the Backyard” by Paul McCartney. Beck is amazing. We could go on forever! All of these people have influenced our style in some way or another. When it comes to sound, being our own producers and engineers, Li and I try to deliver our music with sincerity and authenticity. If you listen to the records we just mentioned this is what shines about them (in our humble opinion). There are real feelings in those songs from the lyrics, through the music and in the delivery of the sound. This is what we strive for. Hopefully we get that across.
  
  Skope: What is coming up for you and where can readers learn more about you?
  JM: Our newest Record “For Our Friends” has us on the road the second half of this year. As we said above, we are touring London in late July. We are planning a tour in the USA and Canada in the early fall and work our way East to West out to California. Being on the road brings us so many new ideas and interesting experiences so we make sure to get on the road as much as possible. We have started working on a new record which will probably be out in the beginning of 2011. Just Married, an Americana duo scheduled to hit the Stanhope House Aug. 20, features Stanhope Native Gary Bonanni and his wife, LiLach. Also on the Just Married bill is Custard Pie, a Newton Led Zepplin tribute band.
  "It's going to be so special for me and interesting to see some of my oldest friends in my home town." Bonanni said. "A lot of them don't even know I make music. We never played a show in my home town. Also, it's the first show in our U.S. tour this summer and it couldn't be a better place. We even have Stevie Ray Vaughn and Ray Charles songs in our catalog; maybe we'll get a couple into the set on the 20th in honor of them and the Stanhope House."
  Just Married splits time between the U.S. and Israel, where they have a recording studio in a cabin on a farm. Gary and LiLach met in New York City.
  They released a seven-song EP in 2007 and they're currently touring their newest full-length album, "For Our Friends." They describe their music as "Americana with a 60's influence and a splash of Indie."

  They have already played in Israel this year, and will be returning cross Atlantic next month to preform throughout America and Canada.

  Every block in every neighborhood should have a band. That was D. Boon’s dream. It came true of course. And if your block doesn’t have one, it’s because they moved to Portland. Or New York. Or Austin.
  
  Just Married are a real New York City couple, LiLach and Gary Bonanni. Like She and Him started out as. Like Nowhere Man and a Whiskey Girl are. Or the Bonzanis. [local couple in a band.] There’s only two of them, so that makes it simpler than, say, Fleetwood Mac.
  
  The cover of the album is perfect. A photo of guitars and microphones set up in front of a simple wood house at night. I would place the music, in a general sense, somewhere in between Sleater Kinney and Jolie Holland or maybe just Jolie Holland with a rock arrangement. Alternative Americana? One of them shreds on electric guitar occasionally, or as needed. The two singing together is usually the highlight of that song. That or the guitar solo. “One More Breath” is stunning. It’s less dancy, more intense. As the CD rolls along, it becomes a pretty mixed bag. The guitar solos are awesome throughout, even in the weaker material. Sometimes they get a little too cute, like this little calico cat walking across my keyboard and laying right on top of it looking at me imploringly and the caps lock goes on, the music stops and suddenly it’s just GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL and then she jumps up and starts clawing at my shirt, purring like some battery operated toy. And I’m totally allergic but I pet her anyway.
  
  Anyway, not much of a complaint really. Now the cat’s jumping all around, flipping over stuff, getting all crazy, scratching the couch all up, chasing invisible creatures.
  
  I can’t pay as much attention to Just Married as I need to, so I’ll probably just check them out at the Monte Vista Lounge on September 16th.
  
  Would D. Boon approve? I don’t see why not. Solid band, zero pretentiousness. Kick ass guitar solos. C’mon.

The Newlywed's,who will be performing at the Anglo-favored Jacob's Ladder Spring Festival next monthe near the Kinneret, say they first chose the name as a joke "we were driving cross country and figured it would be funny to put a just married sign on the back" said LiLach 31, who was born in the U.S. to israeli parents. After meeting Gary in 2005 the couple immigrated to israel to record their latest album "for our friends"......
  They are opening the Festival on May 8th at Ginosaur in Northern Israel along with 3 other players from the states, Rene Hart Bass and Jamie Alegre Drums, then playing at Tmuna at Tel-Aviv on the 10th, and Pub Cnaan in Jerusalem on the 11th

  Throughout the fifteen minutes found in today’s interview, the duo sheds light on their process, the hopes of the band and some current events as they gear up for another US tour covering eleven states, as well as one date in Canada this summer.
  
  “On the road it’s more of an intimate folky arrangement.”
  
  They will be supporting their newest self recorded and self produced album, For Our Friends, which is available now online. The duo proves not only very talented but additionally well rounded, pleasant and appreciative for their opportunities both recording in their studio on the farm and taking “way too many shoes on the road.”

  LiLach and Gary Bonanni are a songwriting duo originally based out of NYC. The two met in a lower east side music club called Rockwood Music Hall where Li was working. With Gary living a block away from the club they often found themselves recording songs in his small home studio. They brought together ideas that were influenced by Country, Folk, Indie Rock and Americana. These songs would eventually become the material forming their first official record, a seven song EP called "Sawyer" (released in 2008). They performed with an array of musicians in the NYC area including NYC greats Sasha Dobson (Norah Jones), Erik Lawrence (The Levon Helmes Band), Jamie Alegre (The Dig) , Rene Hart (James Hunter) and Charlie Burnham (James "Blood" Ulmer).
  
  With this ever-changing act they headlined in venues all around the NYC area including: the Living Room, Rockwood Music Hall, Pianos, Mercury Lounge...etc. In 2007 they took the act on the road and haven't stopped since. At this time the band name Just Married took form. Originally starting as a joke, the two thought it would be a funny idea to cross the country with a Just Married sign in the back of the car. So they did it, after all, they were just two buddies on the road together following a dream. Over the past three years Just Married has performed across the United States and Canada playing over 20 major cities including Chicago, Louisville, New York, Boulder, Santa Fe, San Francisco, Toronto, Montreal and others. In 2009 Just Married played a 7 show tour in Israel with an invitation to perform on the main stage as a special guest at the Jacobs Ladder Bluegrass Festival.
  
  The musical style of the band Just Married has been described as Americana and 60s Rock with dominant female vocals and strong melodies. Citing influence from John Lennon, The Band, Aimee Mann, Norah Jones, Neil Young, Wilco and Elliott Smith, Just Married music comes across with hints, twists and catches drawn from those greats intertwined with original concepts creating a throwback/vintage sound with new ideas. The band has an authentic Indie sound that brings warm tones, interesting melodies and layers and blends that could only come from the Indie recording environment. Li and Gary write, record (including all instrumentation), engineer and produce all recordings in their recording studio known as "Cabin on a Farm Studios," a self-built recording studio retro-fitted out of a room in their cabin tucked in the back corner of a farm.
  
  As the road continues Just Married is currently touring to promote their new release "For Our Friends," a full length album written, recorded and produced by LiLach and Gary Bonanni and mixed and mastered by Simon Vinestock at MixFarm (David Bowie, Robert Plant, Sting and more). The current four country tour includes: Israel, March-May 2010 (Festivals and shows); The United Kingdom, July 2010, including the Secret Garden Party Festival (15,000 attendance); The U.S and Canada, Fall - 2010, including performances in NYC, Chicago, San Francisco, Boulder, Toronto, Montreal...and more.
