Artist Information

Biography

Gospel music is celebrated through a variety of sounds and styles. Although new genres and artists have emerged using contemporary, rap and even Holy Hip Hop musical styles, some artists have been gifted in spreading the gospel by holding on to the roots and rhythms of black sacred music. Conrad Miller is an artist who shines brightly in the genre of traditional gospel music and skillfully showcases this time-honored method of praise in his debut CD, My Journey. The Doylestown, PA, resident, accomplished singer, composer, arranger, recording artist, deacon and choir member is “launching out into the deep” with his first solo recording, a project which is certain to uplift and inspire.

Hailing from North Little Rock, AR, but growing up in Grambling, LA, Conrad exhibited musical talent from an early age. He started piano lessons at the age of 5 and trumpet at the age of 8. Honing his musical skills in the church, he began singing seriously at the age of 12, when the adult choir director at the family’s home church asked him to join the choir. While in school, he grew musically, singing in a variety of choirs and small ensembles, and playing in bands and jazz ensembles. It was in high school that Conrad began his serious pursuit of singing, starting an R&B group along with his brother Doug, an accomplished jazz saxophonist and member of The Count Basie Orchestra, and several other schoolmates. Their group, The Soulful Seven, performed throughout the US over a 5-year time span and was signed to a recording contract with MGM Records, where they were “stable mates” with Lou Rawls, The Righteous Brothers, and Donny and Marie Osmond, to name a few. The group also appeared on national television several times.

Conrad’s musical training continued at Fort Hays Kansas State University where he studied voice with Donald Everette and trumpet under James Olcott. Receiving a full scholarship to do graduate work in voice and opera at The University of Michigan, he sang in the Michigan Men’s Glee Club, the Chamber Choir, and sang lead tenor roles in several operas. While there, Conrad had the privilege of performing solos at Carnegie Hall in New York City and The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. He also performed recitals and solos in Europe and the Canary Islands. It was also in Ann Arbor that Conrad’s composing skills began to surface. One of his R&B songs, “Carla, My Love”, became a “hit” for the nationally-renowned group, The Softones.

In spite of his songwriting success, for almost 20 years, he put his pen down, still continuing to sing occasionally as a church guest vocalist. In early 2001, Conrad rededicated his life to the Lord, and after years of not writing songs, his muse re-emerged. Even with songs flowing out of him constantly, he
was hesitant to step out as an artist. But ultimately it was the untimely death of his 16-year old daughter
Lauren that made him realize how short life is and that he “had no more excuses” in not releasing his songs to the world. These songs – this time spiritual in nature – eventually became tunes for My Journey. Produced by GRAMMY, Dove and Stellar Award winner Steven Ford, the first release from Miller’s Millcon Music is a collection of moving songs of hope, jubilation and motivation. Throughout the 11 songs – all penned by Conrad himself and dedicated to the Lord - the artist sings of his incredible love for God.

Songs like “Amazing”, a bouncy, energetic praise song, capture the essence of a traditional gospel quartet. The CD’s lead single, “Momma Prayed For Me”, is a testimonial for the singer. “A few years ago, on the day before Mother’s Day, I was at my church,” recounts Miller. “One of the members of the church who was with me, asked me, ‘Conrad, did you write a song for Mother’s Day?’ I told her ‘no’ since I hadn’t thought of writing something for the occasion”, said the singer, but the thought stirred in him and a few hours later, he had written “Momma Prayed For Me”. The listener will find it’s a rousing, beat-driven song about a praying mother. Conrad delivers this song, the CD’s lead single, with fervor in a good time of praise.

Other memorable cuts on My Journey include “Jesus Is The Way”, a bubbly song co-written with his late daughter, the smoothed-out melodic “I’ve Been Changed”, the pretty “In Your Time” and the mellow yet sweetly-delivered “Breathe On Me”. Having received airplay throughout the country on more than 150 gospel radio stations, Miller is pleased with the response he’s received. Glowing reviews on Gospelflava.com, PrayzeHymnOnline.com, Gospelcity.com, his home newspaper, “The Intelligencer” and other media outlets confirm that his “step of faith” was the right move. Through his musical ministry and songwriting gift and now his new release, Conrad Miller is blessing many with what he’s been given.
